Why wait until now to sign to play overseas? If there is no season, or possibly no season, why not wait until the drop-dead date of Jan 11? Thats only a week away. If he really wanted to play anywhere, why not sign earlier?

I think he decided to play now as a means of getting himself a few tune-up games under his belt before the season starts – his own pre-season.
