Caps’ Chimera: “I don’t trust Gary Bettman right now”

Even though speculation about a soon-to-be-completed CBA is rampant, Jason Chimera still has his doubts.

“I don’t trust Gary Bettman right now and what his motive is,” Chimera told the Washington Post. “He’s a nice man, I’ve met him numerous times, but I don’t trust what’s happened so far.”

The Washington forward — a veteran of over 600 NHL contests — has been an outspoken critic of league practices.

In August, he said it would be “pretty dumb” to have a lockout.

In October, he made an odd analogy about the owners’ willingness to make a deal.

“Maybe they’re looking at the season like an advent calendar – like Christmas is coming and they’re taking their chocolates out one day at a time,”he said. “And when the big chocolate comes they make a proposal.”

In December, he called the league’s actions “childish” and “absurd”, then compared labor negotiations to “chasing a chicken around” before suggesting owners were trying to crush the union.

With those comments as a backdrop, it’s not surprising he’s skeptical about the current round of talks.

To be fair to Chimera, his frustrations are legitimate. He probably would’ve loved to carry over the momentum from 2011-12 — at 33, he posted career highs in goals (20) and points (39) — and make good on the two-year, $3.5 million deal signed with the Caps just prior to the start of last season.

But this is now the second lockout Chimera’s been through, and the frustrations are evident.

“If they’re working that late, last night was great and if they keep meeting [Thursday] it’s positive,” he explained. “I just don’t believe anything anymore until it’s done.”

:-l <- the face of everyone caring.

Fehr wouldve been a wise leader to tell these guys "Look, we didnt have a gag order or anything, but can you guys just stay out of the media and keep your mouths shut until this is settled?"

  2. ravenscaps48 - Jan 3, 2013 at 3:03 PM

And we, the fans (who make this league what it is), don’t trust any of you clowns either!

    • hockeyflow33 - Jan 3, 2013 at 5:56 PM

No, the players are what make the league so good, not some fat, shirtless guy with a painted chest

  3. nach0mancandysandwich - Jan 3, 2013 at 3:09 PM

As far as I can see this guys an idiot. We are as close to a deal as we’ve been and he decides to make a really dumb and pointless comment. As a Rangers fan I hate this guy. He kicks us in the balls almost every time we play them. We get it Jason, you don’t like mister Bettman. No one does. Pipe down. Go back to the kids table and leave the talking to the big boys. You don’t even have a point every 2 games, stop stating the obvious and start polishing Ovi’s skates for opening night.

    • ibieiniid - Jan 3, 2013 at 4:22 PM

i think the guy with NEARLY a point per 2 games has a lot more of a say than a PHT commenter with 0 points in 0 games

      • nach0mancandysandwich - Jan 3, 2013 at 4:35 PM

I didn’t realize we had to play the game in order to comment!? Who am I talking to here? Is this Eric Lindros or maybe Joe Sakic? If you want Jason Chimera as the face of the league than you can have him. If not then you better reconsider supporting his dumb comments.

      • ibieiniid - Jan 3, 2013 at 4:38 PM

i didn’t realize he had to score a point per game to comment.

        this is Adam Oates.

      • 8man - Jan 3, 2013 at 8:07 PM

Okay, so Adam, if a guy wanted an autographed 8×10 of you hanging in his basement, how would he reach out to you to make that happen?

      • ibieiniid - Jan 4, 2013 at 8:25 AM

contact my agent Chris Simon. beware of fists.

  4. travishenryskid - Jan 3, 2013 at 3:11 PM

What’s the deal with the Caps being so outspoken?

    • nach0mancandysandwich - Jan 3, 2013 at 3:20 PM

It’s a false sence of entitlement. What good does he think he’s accomplishing is the real question here? If he weren’t saying these things would anyone know or care to know who he is? He’s a 3rd line guy at best. My advice? Stay in your lane Jason.

      • ibieiniid - Jan 3, 2013 at 4:26 PM

i’d agree with you if the guy was calling press conferences to bash. but he’s being interviewed, answering questions that somebody asked him. fans like transparency. i think he’s just a straight shooter that doesn’t dodge questions. simple as that.

Something in the water in DC must eliminate the filter between the brain and the mouth.

      • ravenscaps48 - Jan 3, 2013 at 3:30 PM

Just a few people. It’s because two people spoke against the player reps, that two more felt obligated to stand up for the Fehr’s. that’s all it is. Personally, I want a tag team hockey fight with Brouwer and Jason on a team versus Hamrlik and Neuvirth. I think Hammer could hold his on, but Neuvy? Not so much. That would definitely eliminate the “who should start in goal” question for the Caps… When all of us Caps fans know that there is a beast in Hershey just waiting for work…. A Holtbeast!!!

      • ibieiniid - Jan 3, 2013 at 4:48 PM

        it’s the crack

      • holtbeast - Jan 3, 2013 at 6:32 PM

        @ravenscaps48 You called?

    • hockeyflow33 - Jan 3, 2013 at 5:58 PM

Must be something about DC that empowers idiots to feel smart.

  5. canuckinamerica - Jan 3, 2013 at 3:34 PM

Chimera……a very average player who has luckily made millions because of the insanity of professional sports. And then he has the gall to dump on those who have been responsible in helping these average players make that kind of money. He was only one skate away from a life career saying “Fries with that?”.

  6. uscthom78 - Jan 3, 2013 at 3:53 PM

Don’t give a d**** who y’all trust or don’t trust. Stop ur stupid pr battles and come up with a deal.

  7. bhawksrule - Jan 3, 2013 at 4:00 PM

What do you need trust for?

  8. britkei - Jan 3, 2013 at 4:10 PM

Seems to be more upset about the process than Bettman. That’s what happens when your time in the NHL is finite (players) against an opposition who’s time associated with the league is much longer.

  9. dkphilly1122 - Jan 3, 2013 at 4:11 PM

Chimera might be a 3rd line guy at best, that is true, but what line or team do you play for?? That’s right you don’t, so who are you to criticize anyone for saying their opinion?? Because he is a Professional Athlete it is all over the news when he says something yet if an average guy or girl says something it is no big deal. Get a life people, stop hating on him for speaking HIS Opinion. The same opinion we all have on Bettman at that. I hate Chimera when he is on the ice as a Flyers fan, but he deserves his opinion. That will have ZERO effect on whether a deal gets done or not. If both sides truly wanna salvage a 48 game season than they have bigger issues to worry about than what one player says.

    • gc19 - Jan 3, 2013 at 5:17 PM

agreed! anyone who believes that what a player has to say will have any effect on a deal getting done is an idiot! with him having 3 work stoppages since 1994 (some players involved in all 3), any player has every reason to not trust Bettman. actually the only thing you can trust from this guy is that there will be another work stoppage when the new CBA expires in 6-10 years

  10. dkphilly1122 - Jan 3, 2013 at 5:00 PM

In regards to your “dumb” comment…….my point was who are you to call an NHL player, a Professional athlete, “Just a 3rd liner at best” when you are probably no where near a professional commenting on what he says and does. Like I stated above, he is entitled to his opinion, it just gets blown up in the media because of who he is.

    • nach0mancandysandwich - Jan 3, 2013 at 5:31 PM

Take it eeeeeeasy haha it’s just fun. I think the guys an idiot, I didn’t realize you we’re his mom and would make 2 posts about your love for his rights as a human.

  11. fortwaynekomets - Jan 3, 2013 at 5:29 PM

ok the first 2 times he said stuff….fine.

    we get it Chimera!

you don’t like Bettman neither so we now STFU and STFD please. thanks.

  12. barkar942 - Jan 3, 2013 at 7:31 PM

So since you are unhappy with the league’s commissioner and the motives of the owners, GO PLAY IN THE KHL!

    • calithirteen - Jan 4, 2013 at 11:37 AM

so i guess you are happy with the fact that Bettman and the greedy owners locked out the players after a record 3 billion in profits from last year and the highest ratings since before the last lockout? Bettman n these owners r spoiled children. They made these contracts w/ the players…..no one put a gun to their head. Now they are crying because they pay the players too much? Way to go back on your word owners.

  13. sampulls - Jan 3, 2013 at 11:49 PM

Another stupid comment from another stupid player.

  14. ducksk - Jan 4, 2013 at 1:58 AM

Stupid is what stupid does. STFU. I would not want him as a teammate, and his loudmouth will not be forgotten by GM’S and mgmt. good luck with that.
