PHT housekeeping: Commenter blocking

Jan 2, 2013, 11:07 AM EDT

Cat keyboard

Many of you will be pleased to know that a certain commenter has been banned, as he was becoming too much of a distraction below.

Banning commenters isn’t something we like to do. We never do it because somebody criticizes what we write. We only do it if somebody starts ruining it for everyone else or if somebody becomes abusive. We also sacrifice one commenter each year to the volcano god.

If you’re curious, the way we ban people is by blocking their username, email address and IP address. The reason some commenters re-appear with different usernames is they create new emails and use applications that change their IP addresses. It’s pretty pathetic that they do this, but some people have sad lives. All we can do is keep banning them, which is as annoying for us as it sounds.

If you’d like to contact PHT, we’ve set up an email address at prohockeytalkpht (at) yahoo.com.

The comments section has grown a lot in the last year and we’re happy to have so many people adding to the site. Hopefully this lockout will be over soon and everyone can get back to debating Tim Thomas’s politics.

        —-

it was in yesterday’s Eberle hat trick article. His comments were erased so there isn’t much to see… I was having fun :)

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Jan 2, 2013 at 2:27 PM

He had a bit of a psychotic break on the WJC suspensions article yesterday but someone at PHT cleaned it up pretty quickly.

      • hockeyflow33 - Jan 2, 2013 at 3:42 PM

He was posting man on man porn videos on articles….I guess he thought this was the soccer forum

    • hockeyfan28 - Jan 2, 2013 at 2:19 PM

Man Awesome is gone….dude was a different cat

  3. bcsteele - Jan 2, 2013 at 11:19 AM

Will you ban me for saying thank you? At least he can have the satisfaction of knowing he was the topic of a story on here…good riddance…

  4. grillmarks - Jan 2, 2013 at 11:20 AM

    Thank you!

  5. urineidiot - Jan 2, 2013 at 11:20 AM

I for one will miss their informative and entertaining posts for sure.

  6. hrudey - Jan 2, 2013 at 11:21 AM

They banned Roberto Luongo, though strombone1 is still allowed to post.

  7. capesouth - Jan 2, 2013 at 11:24 AM

I like commenting but just don’t do what I have seen on other sites, which is linking facebook to the site and then forcing users to sign into facebook before they can comment. I hate that and I will never do it. NESN did that here in the northeast. I dont use facebook. Now I never visit NESN bc a major reason I went to their site was to be involved in the crazy back and forth with other commentors. It was a great forum that has since been ruined…unless they’ve changed it since then…last time I was there was during the Bruins stanley cup run.

  8. Stiller43 - Jan 2, 2013 at 11:27 AM

    Hoorayy!!!

  9. purp1234 - Jan 2, 2013 at 11:32 AM

Well, at least this announcement came from a named source! Thanks, Jason!

    • imleftcoast - Jan 2, 2013 at 2:59 PM

Agree, someone has resolved to be a ‘big boy’ this year. Might just move out of mom’s basement.

      • xxshookonexx - Jan 2, 2013 at 3:06 PM

Why isn’t it ever dad’s basement? Dad just gets no respect

  10. lordstanley65 - Jan 2, 2013 at 11:33 AM

And there goes our insider scoops!

  11. shotzongoal - Jan 2, 2013 at 11:36 AM

Thank you. What we need to do as members of this board is to not respond to this type of poster. While it is sometimes difficult, simply not reading their posts and feeding their cry for attention is most effective in having them move on. Thanks again for your efforts.

    • hockeyflow33 - Jan 2, 2013 at 3:38 PM

If we didn’t reply to idiots on message boards half the internet would be gone.

  12. tfaltin - Jan 2, 2013 at 11:38 AM

Isn’t the timing ironic given that many credible sources are saying the deal is (more or less) imminent? I wonder what the I-told-you-so would have looked like…Well done, PHT.

  13. bricktop02 - Jan 2, 2013 at 11:39 AM

May the source be with you always.

  14. rich859 - Jan 2, 2013 at 11:41 AM

    It’s a festivus miracle!

  15. ferrantej - Jan 2, 2013 at 11:43 AM

I’ve been reading the board for a few months but I don’t comment – in fact, the above was my first comment and this is my second. But every time I’d see him pop up I would think, “just ignore him!” I know it’s hard to do because he just BEGGED for the abuse, but he also lived for the abuse. I’m sure his life feels empty right now – but he probably also loves the fact that PHT actually has a post about him now.

    • elvispocomo - Jan 2, 2013 at 1:47 PM

I don’t know about empty – the poster in question has likely just moved on to another site where he can do the same thing. It may not affect him much, but it’ll will surely make life here more enjoyable (assuming he doesn’t do a new username/email/IP as mentioned before).

  16. elemeno89 - Jan 2, 2013 at 11:55 AM

im curios as to who it was. haha this is intriguing.

    • hockinj25 - Jan 2, 2013 at 12:20 PM

If you’ve read any comments from the last couple of days its quite obvious.

  17. bufffalojoe - Jan 2, 2013 at 11:58 AM

Wait….what about the FREE tickets in a city of choice for the 1000th dislike he received?

  18. mp1131211 - Jan 2, 2013 at 11:58 AM

So in order to get someone banned, all we have to do is get 1000 thumbs down on a comment?

  19. shoobiedoobin - Jan 2, 2013 at 12:04 PM

But who will make up total lies, act purposely smug out if insecurity and live for any attention negative or positive? Stay strong kiddo, we’ll miss ya little fella!

  20. therealjr - Jan 2, 2013 at 12:12 PM

    Jason,

Despite being affiliated with NBC sports, this technology is a somewhat of a low-rent word press operation and that’s about all you can do.

Some better sites allow for automatic hiding of low rated comments.

If the HTML is built in a certain manner, you can use tools like ad block or no script to remove certain user comments. That won’t work with WordPress, unless you want to block all the comments.

I’m surprised you allow comments to embed video. That’s pretty unusual.

What does PFT do, the same?

    • shotzongoal - Jan 2, 2013 at 1:14 PM

I would like to see embedded video disabled. It really does not enhance Pro Hockey TALK.

    • mp1131211 - Jan 2, 2013 at 5:41 PM

WordPress sucks. Plain and simple and I hope to see its demise someday soon.

    • drewsylvania - Jan 5, 2013 at 12:40 PM

Nah, PFT just blocks about 50% of the comments posted in order to preserve a precious, specious narrative.

  21. broadstbully33 - Jan 2, 2013 at 12:18 PM

Is Joey really gone? Where will we get all his common sense info?

  22. govtminion - Jan 2, 2013 at 12:24 PM

Sad, really. I used to post here almost daily, and gave up because, as was said in the article, one person consistently ruined it for everyone else. I gave up on the place in disgust when nothing was done about it and went elsewhere for my NHL news. When a friend of mine called and asked if I knew who was banned from PHT this morning, I was surprised- I assumed they simply COULDN’T ban by IP, because that was the only thing that made sense. But if they CAN do so… that they’re banning this guy now, and have continued to let this ‘Soup Can’ idiot run wild, that tells me I’ve made the right choice in staying away, sadly. Very disappointed.

    • kyzslew77 - Jan 2, 2013 at 12:33 PM

      Don’t be so sanctimonious.

    • Mike Halford - Jan 2, 2013 at 12:51 PM

As the article states, the reason we couldn’t ban Senor Soup Can is because he kept changing his IP address. Believe us, we tried…many, many times.

So, anyway, govt…maybe we should think about getting back together? I mean is that crazy? I know things ended badly but we were so young back then. We could start slow, maybe just go for coffee. Or even a meal of food. No, food’s too soon. We don’t wanna rush this.

      • ron05342 - Jan 2, 2013 at 12:59 PM

LOL that is an awesome response. Well done, Mike.

      • thesoupliveson - Jan 2, 2013 at 3:17 PM

        THE SOUP LIVES ON SON

Wait till the season starts and your girth master will come and join the commenting but for now I shall leave you be.

      • flyersgoalscoredby88 - Jan 3, 2013 at 4:08 PM

Mike, this made me laugh at work.

        Two things:
1)Good to know you CAN ban people
        2) I might have stuck around had you guys at least mentioned that you were trying to ban the soup can idiot. I always figured you just didn’t care about the quality of your online forum, so why should I?

      • Mike Halford - Jan 3, 2013 at 4:35 PM

Thanks. We were trying not to draw too much attention to le can de soup because, well, you know, feeding the trolls and all that stuff.

So, plan on sticking around this time?

    • misterchainbluelightning - Jan 2, 2013 at 12:55 PM

Don’t blame PHT because you think IP bans mean something.
They don’t to anyone with a router and the slightest knowledge about computers.

  23. Buford T Justice - Jan 2, 2013 at 12:27 PM

Now if we can just rid ourselves of Blomfeld….. lets have a vote

    • thailer35 - Jan 2, 2013 at 12:51 PM

While I disagree with most of his ideas about conspiracy theories, as well as his ideas of how talented some of the LA Kings are, and will fight tooth and nail against the Phoeniphobia he shares with many others here on PHT, Blomfeld is far from abusive. Many may consider his opinions outlandish, but aside from some grammatical errors and of course the endless quotation marks (which are the only things we might be able to say he abuses), he typically has at least a thought out contribution that is usually worthy of debating (which, as I mentioned before, I most often will). I look forward to the end of this lockout and hopefully Blomfeld will be here giving me every oportunity to argue that Jonathan Quick is overrated, that Dustin Brown is a dirty player, and that hockey will survive in Phoenix. The purpose of these comment sections are for us to debate our opinions, no matter how illogical some may be. We come to PHT for the information the writers provide, not for the “inside scoop” some high school drop out plagierized. Let us use the comment section for it’s purpose.

      Go ‘Yotes!

    • sportsfan69 - Jan 2, 2013 at 1:22 PM

      Buford T. Justice,

Blomfeld (Bandit) and Joey (Snowman) will still elude you as the superior call handles.

  24. silversun60 - Jan 2, 2013 at 12:31 PM

    Must say… thanks.

The comments here were turning really stupid and childish….. made me appreciate the HBT comments that much more!

  25. mgp1219 - Jan 2, 2013 at 12:38 PM

IT’S A GREAT DAY FOR HOCKEY!!!

Thank you Jason. I asked a few months ago to have him banned and now he’s finally gone. That should take care of about 4 or 5 commentors, since it was the same person, I believe. No more idiotic “insider information” and no more annoying embedded videos (which i never watched, but they took up a lot of vliable space).

    • mgp1219 - Jan 2, 2013 at 12:46 PM

      *valuable space

    • mp1131211 - Jan 2, 2013 at 1:28 PM

I was never certain that he had multiple handles. How could you tell for sure? I wouldn’t put it past him, but I wasn’t ever positive.

      • elvispocomo - Jan 2, 2013 at 2:01 PM

You two posting next to each other about people having multiple handles is ironic because your usernames are so similar/easily confused. Oh my gosh, I think I’ve just stumbled onto something – they’re really the same person!

      • mp1131211 - Jan 2, 2013 at 2:21 PM

        Yep. You’ve busted me. Damnit!

  26. barkar942 - Jan 2, 2013 at 12:43 PM

Jason, nice picture of you at work. You could use a shave, though. Must be all of these late nights waiting for breaking news of a deal!

  27. bradd94 - Jan 2, 2013 at 1:00 PM

I have been reading these comments for months now. Joey clearly was trolling but I kind of miss the laughs. I think we’ll all remember it for the rest of our time here.

  28. Buford T Justice - Jan 2, 2013 at 1:05 PM

I’m not claiming to be any type of Hockey expert but Blomfeld adds nothing to this forum , no hockey knowledge whatsoever, he/she claims to be a life long LA Kings fan (insert eye roll and chuckle at that) and his/her stupid annoying youtube videos serve no purpose to any types of debates or conversations .

    • elvispocomo - Jan 2, 2013 at 2:03 PM

Blomfeld has had the occasion post with reason and good information, that is when he’s not spamming unnecessary videos of Elvis (and I love Elvis, look at my username) or going overboard like a street corner preacher on a soapbox.

      • hockeyflow33 - Jan 2, 2013 at 3:40 PM

I didn’t know anyone actually read his thesis-length posts

  29. gunnyhighway88 - Jan 2, 2013 at 1:13 PM

I was actually more entertained with people complaining about his posts. I always thought, “why not ignore him?”

  30. sportsfan69 - Jan 2, 2013 at 1:16 PM

Let’s get rid of the Hillbilly with multiple names. The confederates lost in 1865, along with the 2012 elections. Freedom prevailed.

  31. ravenscaps48 - Jan 2, 2013 at 1:24 PM

    Thank You!!!

  32. bradd94 - Jan 2, 2013 at 1:27 PM

Don’t know why I got thumbed down for that. I’m just saying, you’ve got to admit, it was pretty fricken hilarious while it lasted.

“I say your sources are full of crap”

“A broken clock is right twice a day”

  33. mgp1219 - Jan 2, 2013 at 1:34 PM

Time to get rid of sportsfan69, too. He’s a blomfeld/joey disciple and is now embedding stupid videos. Please Jason, don’t let this go on any longer than it has to.

  34. sportsfan69 - Jan 2, 2013 at 1:51 PM

    MGP1219,

Censorship? Are you judge, juror, and executioner? Then, call yourself a freedom loving American. Lighten up dude, it’s going to be a great today. We’ll a CBA established.

NHL Lockout Over Before End of the Week: CONFIRMED

Some huge progress has been achieved today through internal meetings even before the 4PM start for the CBA negotiations. Both parties made important concessions, and according to very important sources the lockout is 95% done. Many of the main issues have been solved, 1 or 2 remain, plus some minor tweaks that lawyers will be in charge of finalizing. Sources have confirmed to me that an official announcement of the end of the lockout will be made before Sunday.

Here are the CBA details that the NHL and NHLPA have already agreed upon:

$300M make whole amount, with no salary rollbacks and 50-50 HRR split
Maximum contract length at 6 years
Salary cap at $70.2M this season, goes down to $63.5M next season, but teams have option to buy out 1 player before season starts with no cap impact
    No re-entry waivers
    Extended Christmas break for players
Duration of new CBA 10 years, with both NHL and NHLPA having the option of opting out after 8.
The main issue remaining is the players wanting to put a cap on the escrow amount. The league hopes to having this solved by moving up from their previous offer of $60M cap for 2013-14 to $63.5M but the players want either cap on escrow or $67M cap for 2013-14.

However, per sources from both parties this does not put in peril the agreement. If a deal is reached before Friday, we will have a 52 game season. Otherwise, it will be a 48 game season. The great news is that we will have a season…

    • thailer35 - Jan 2, 2013 at 2:06 PM

Oh good lord, here we go again…

      • ferrantej - Jan 2, 2013 at 2:09 PM

I was thinking the exact same thing.

    • bradd94 - Jan 2, 2013 at 2:29 PM

      Are you fricken kidding me..

    • elvispocomo - Jan 2, 2013 at 2:35 PM

Where have we heard that before?
“Sides are close to an agreement”
“Players and owners meeting directly to solve lockout”
      “Mediators accepted by both sides”

    • mgp1219 - Jan 2, 2013 at 4:54 PM

See what I mean, Jason…take him out, too.

  35. joeyashwi - Jan 2, 2013 at 2:16 PM

Thank you PHT! As the only network that will carry the NHL and your awesome moderators, NBC has moved up a notch in my books!

  36. seals1 - Jan 2, 2013 at 3:41 PM

let’s face it, NBC is as far left as you can get and one micro fraction from being the “Red Star”. As long as you type what they want to hear it will get posted.

Welcome to the new NBC America!

    • ron05342 - Jan 2, 2013 at 6:25 PM

Dude, go away and lick your wounds which are undoubtedly still open after your side got creamed once again by Obama.

It’s bad enough we have to deal with and learn about lockout technicalities without having to deal with politics on this site as well. Go away.

  37. swizzler16 - Jan 2, 2013 at 3:55 PM

I, for one, welcome our new, censoring overlords.

    time to ban sportsfan69

    • sportsfan69 - Jan 2, 2013 at 8:04 PM

It’s time ban the Buford T Justice, who symbolizes himself as a proud racist. Be careful for what you wish for. I’m sure the NBC advertisers would not happy to be associated with someone like BTJ. :)

Down the slippery slope of censorship?

    • mp1131211 - Jan 2, 2013 at 7:22 PM

Hardly… the guy had it coming for months. Apparently this porn filled meltdown was part of his doing, too. Not sure how that all works out though…. he must have had like 4-5 handles.

  44. williplett - Jan 3, 2013 at 2:37 AM

So joey and blomfeld really were the same guy after all. Who else were they?

  45. hgfrombc2 - Jan 3, 2013 at 7:24 AM

    Jason,
Good write-up. Can you please pass your guidelines over the to girl scouts at PFT (especially Florio)?
Disagree with them just once, and try to inject a little humor (where they fail miserably) and your post stays up for a matter of minutes.
Kiss their royal, holy-than-thou, asses and your comment magically sticks around.

  46. klownboy - Jan 3, 2013 at 2:29 PM

Keep up the good work guys!

  47. drewsylvania - Jan 5, 2013 at 12:46 PM

Nah, PFT just blocks about 50% of the comments posted in order to preserve a precious, specious narrative.

  48. chrisk61 - Jan 8, 2013 at 11:15 PM

soup can just had displaced aggression because:

    1. cyndi is 1 good hit away from retirement
