I concur. Rarely are the two first place teams of each conferences in the Stanley Cup final. The first half of the season is for tuning up the system, then they turn it up a notch for the second half, and turn another few notches when the playoffs start. This 48 game season is going to be a mad dash to the finish line. Each shift, period, mad game will be crucial. It's going to be the best 48 games we may ever see. Never has the game been this fast before the 05/06 season. It's impossible for a team to perform at its peak for 82 games. I remember one NHL coach telling me how he can't be pushing his team to be at full throttle for 82 games.

Case and point; After the Islanders' regular season dominance and playoff disappointment in 1979, Arbour decided that he would no longer concern himself too greatly with his team's finish in the regular season. Instead, he focused his team's energy on how they would perform in the playoffs. In 1980, the Islanders dropped below the 100-point mark for the first time in five years, earning only 91 points. However, they finally broke through and won the Stanley Cup.

Yea I dont agree with people who think half a season would make the season mean less. The NHL season counts for less then any other major sports league. They allow more then half the league into the playoffs with about 3 to 4 teams in each conference that are so bad that they rarely ever make a playoff push. Which leaves about 2 teams that are pretenders each year that make it seem like they might make the playoffs but never do. Leaving around 2 teams that really have a chance to win a bottom seed. So really its about 10 legitimate teams fighting for 8 spots. And the difference between the top 5 to 6 playoff teams and the bottom 2-3 playoff teams is so big that really those 5-6 teams fighting for those last few playoff spots are really only doing it for bragging rights to say they made the playoffs. Their not gonna win the cup. So dont tell me 40 some games isnt enough time to figure out who deserves to make the playoffs. If you gave Hockey fans the chance to pick 10 teams from each conference that had a chance to make the playoffs before each seasons the majority of them would have included the 8 teams that actually made the playoffs that year in their 10 picks.

I also don't like the idea of the Cup being awarded during a shortened season. Much of my earlier prognosis for play to resume by Thanksgiving was admittedly based on "wishful thinking" as 65-70 games somehow seems a lot more palatable than just 48. But now as the beggars which we've become, it looks like we won't have much of a choice, eh ?

Tatdue - Maybe then "conspiracy" isn't the correct term for what I'm suggesting? Let's call it instead a "business plan" or an "endeavor" ... or perhaps even just a "mind set". The bottom line is that I believe there is an underlying agenda at play here, being driven by Bettman "in concert" with a number of the key power owners. And no, it likely doesn't include hundreds or thousands of co-conspirators sworn to silence and fiendishly working behind the scenes. All it would take is for Bettman and a handful of others to have simply agreed beforehand that they push this thing to a predetermined start date "come hell or high water" for whatever reason(s) they deem that necessary. You're obviously an adult and so you know how life works. When Michael Eisner was CEO at Disney, was it a conspiracy if he had an idea set in his mind on a project and then proceeded to see it through to completion, despite all the naysayers and doubters around him ? ... of course not. Was Christopher Columbus a conspirator when he set sail for the new world because he believed that the world was round, while the Church and everyone around him told him he was absolutely nuts ? ... of course not.

Look, I don't know anymore about what's really going on than you. I have no idea what the goals and aims of such a plan would be and I have no clue if such a plan would even make sense from a business point of view? Knock off half the season? ... anger everyone involved or associated with the game? ... risk irreparable damage to the brand itself? On the surface that sounds like sheer madness. And yet that's what I truly suspect is playing out here? Don't ask me why, as I'm just a humble fan of the game. But I do genuinely sense that we're all being taken for fools here.

ps: anyway, everyone should always keep it fun and lighthearted here at PHT eh ? ... so merry Christmas to you and all the best for 2013 ! ... Blomfeld :)

There you go again trying to set yourself up as a wiener, I mean winner.....Tell me this Valoisjoeybfeld69....How exactly does the owners not demanding as much from the players to save a shortened season (in reality that's what it really would be) equate to you being right about the owners and the Fehr brothers, all the GMs, coaches, players (at least all PA representatives), the media, all sponsors, and all broadcasters (and I'm sure I'm missing a few thousand or so more people) all got together and created this giant ruse! Which is that the lock out is actually fake and it was only done to delay the start of the hockey season because the southern teams don't make enough money during the first few months of operation...Not that it was ever considered a real possibility but what do you imagine the cost would be to pull off a charade like this just in man power alone? Let alone risking the integrity of everybody involved, the value of all franchises, the value of the NHL brand and even the possibility of the demise of the sport!!!.....I say how about you grow up now Valoisjoeybfeld69 and just come to the realization that this lock out and negotiation was 100% real period. Your "heads I win, tails you lose ploy" is for children to play....If the owners lighten up on their demands then the players bonus and they have shown the owners that if they want to try to railroad them again that it will very much cost them....If the players give up a little more, then the owners get a bonus but they have still learned the same lesson!

Everybody knew this lock out was going to happen simply because of Bettman and the owners past record with this crap and if the players didn't make a stand we would all be enduring these bs lock outs every time a new CBA is needed!!!!!!

Hopefully after this one Bettman finally gets retired? :)

Hiring agencies specializing in anti-union practices has been an option available to employers from the bloody strikes of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, until today.

Employers began to demand more subtle and sophisticated union busting tactics, and so the field called "preventive labor relations" was born. The new practitioners were armed with degrees in industrial psychology, management, and labor law. Can you say Proskauer Rose?

From 1960 to 2000 the percentage of workers in the United States belonging to a labor union fell from 30% to 13%, almost all of that decline being in the private sector.[40] This is despite an increase in workers expressing an interest in belonging to unions since the early 1980s.
