My question is this: how does he have this cash?!? He’s an NHL player (low wages, right?) and they’re locked out – so no paychecks. I’m surprised to know that NHL players make this kind of money. No hating tho….look at the really rich people – they flaunt all the time.

That’s a joke and a fallacy. The reason teams charge as much as they do is because enough people are willing to pay those prices, not just because of player costs. Blaming the player costs is just a convenient excuse that the fans might buy. In the past 5 years, the cheapest seat to see the Blackhawks was $8 with a student ID and they couldn’t even give them away because they sucked and no one wanted to support $Bill Wirtz. Now the cheapest seat is almost $30 and I’m on about a 10 year wait for season tickets. Look at Toronto and Montreal ticket prices vs. prices in Phoenix.

The players can definitely be blamed for not knowing when to shut up. Fehr should have told the players “I’m not putting a gag order on you like the NHL is doing, but think before you speak.” The geniuses that had to mouth off on twitter could cost the PA to lose in court, and its affecting them in public opinion. Blaming for them fighting against what looks more like all about crushing the union than getting a fair deal is not entirely fair, but the players should be realistic. Blaming them for ticket costs is just laughable.

I don’t have a problem with it… It is his money he can burn it if he so chooses. Those of you that are whining need to stop feeling so bad for yourself. I’m sure he is holding at least half of my annual income in his hands in this photo. The fact that he took this picture is a pretty good indicator that in the not too distant future Mr. kane will be broke. He can pile all of his money up and swim in it like scrooge mcduck for if he so chooses. You blowhards that rip a 21 y/o rich person for acting like a 21 y/o rich person are either jealous or jealous. How does this photo impact anybody?

No Arguments here, a league can be gate driven. But only if there is a large amount of revenue sharing like baseball. Baseball is similar to hockey in that its revenue is mostly driven by gate receipts and local tv contracts. But they have the most revenue sharing between teams, that allows all teams to be profitable.

I am not a fan of either Elias and especially Havlat (as hockey players) but come on… Going to a Real Madrid game isn’t falunting anything infront of someone’s face. The tweats by them were not bragging, just showing that they were having a fun time in an early lockout situation. No harm done…Most people could afford that trip if they wanted to and or saved properly… I won’t ever be mad for someone enjoying their money when they’re not intentionally rubbing it in one’s face.

Wrong. Oh so very wrong.

This has been discussed around here before, but ticket prices will always be based on demand. The people that sell out have the highest ticket prices and the people that dont have the lowest. Has nothing to do with the salaries the players are paid, especially when salaries are linked to revenue as is. If every team cut their tickets by half, the players share of the tickets sold(currently 57, soon to be 50) would also be cut in half.

The reason, and the only reason ticket prices are set where they are is because of demand. Its why Toronto avg ticket prices are $130 dollars for a non playoff team and Phoenix is $30 for a playoff team.

This is the problem I have with Bettman. People trumpet about how much he’s grown the game. No – he cherry picked. It’s still a gate-run sport, where as the big leagues are fed by the TV contracts. He has grown the sport as far as a 1960′s era model will let it go.

Get the TV contracts to foot the bill. But a little tough to do that now…

It’s no secret that these guys are very wealthy (even 4th-liners and 7th d-men make more than 99 percent of wage earners), but there are ways to conduct yourself and ways not to. This doesn’t look good for the players who are crying about how unfair the lockout is. Bad timing and it gives them a very poor, out-of-touch image.
