Turris was bored and hungry in Finland (and the travel wasn’t so great either)

Add Kyle Turris to the growing list of NHLers who found life in Europe slightly less cushy than they were used to.

Speaking with the Globe and Mail, here are some of the complaints the 23-year-old Senators forward had about playing for Oulun Karpat of the Finnish league:

—- He hated the big ice.

—- There was nothing to do in Oulun, a city of 150,000 that Wikipedia calls “one of the northernmost larger cities in the world.”

—- The travel was “horrendous,” with flights followed by long bus rides and too many stops on the bus rides.

—- The food was “awful” and the team ate at truck stops all the time.

—- Conversing with people was “so awkward. They don’t understand anything that you’re saying, staring at you confused.”

Other than that, it was fantastic.

In fairness, Turris may have been exaggerating his Finnish experience for comedic purposes. Upon returning home he told the Ottawa Sun that “Oulu was awesome. The organization was great. They treated us really well. I was lucky to be put into a position where I was playing 20 minutes a game. It’s a great league, really competitive. Any team can win on any given night. It was fun and a great experience.”

In 21 games for Karpat, Turris racked up 19 points in 21 games.

For cattle, you get treated pretty well in the NHL. Come to a freakin’ agreement already!

It will be great to watch this union go down in flames when it hits the courts. Then they will no longer be high end cattle. Just moderate grade AA beef.

matt8204 beat me to it – I guess Turris discovered that different farms treat the cattle in different ways. :-) Then again, Turris played NCAA, not major junior, so riding the bus for 10 hours and eating at Mickey D’s like the junior players do routinely was somewhat foreign to him.

The NHL brand is taking a beating, and players like Turris are wasting the prime of their earning years. The fact that they can’t seem to come to an agreement, and have taken to suing each other, is just comical…

    Turris Schmurris …

the truth is that Finland would indeed be a pretty “unappealing” place to play this time of year. The extreme cold temperatures and minimal daylight hours (0900-1500) are one thing. However the Finnish people themselves are a curious lot, not exactly known to be overly engaging or humorous. It’s like that in fact throughout most of Scandinavia, though it’s especially so in Finland.

Whale and horse meat. 1950’s planes, trains and automobiles. Think they miss Ruth criss and the ritz Carlson? They have no option compared to the NHL.
