I am a firm believer that there will not be a deal till the season is on the line. The NHL seems pretty damn firm on their stance, and the players will likely fight AT LEAST until the last possible minute to break that and get at least some movement from the league. Thats not likely to happen, and the real question becomes will the NHLPA blink before its too late?

Despite neither side wanting to state a drop dead date, its almost certainly January 15th. Thats pretty much the absolute latest the CBA can be signed and a 48 game season played. So if there is a deal, and I still think there will be*, I doubt it will happen until at least the 10-12th of January… and perhaps even later.

*Theres going to be a deal because its no secret that if the owners are willing to lose the season to get the deal they want, their offer will not get any better next summer. The absolute last chance the players have to get a better deal (though unlikely) is the day before the season in canceled. If they go past that, the deal they end up signing next summer will be a lot worse then the one currently on the table and they know it. So expect the players to play chicken with the loss of the season right up to the final hour… and then sign whatever deal is on the table at the time.
