@tyler....Fail.

They made *57%* of HRR over the last CBA. FIFTY SEVEN(!)

And, FYI, they already make more on average than NFL players 2.4M to 1.9M.

Get some facts.

They, despite what people may have thought at the time, "won" the last CBA. salaries went up 17, 10, and 15% in the last 3 years. Yes average salaries went down in 04 22% but that really was reigning in the "yankees" of the NHL by instituting the cap. The average player made out like a bindit on this CBA in part due to the cap floor.

So yes, get some facts please.

Finally realized Bettman is not the villain in this piece. He is behaving exactly as a sport commisioner should - acting in the best interests of the sport he leads. The lockout is not meant to punish players, fans or small market teams. It is the line drawn over front loaded deals by teams that can afford to exploit the loopholes in the expired CBA. If you want to point the finger at anyone, point it at Snider and Shea Weber. That deal forced Bettman's hand heading into the negotiations.

You're right! They didn't see these deals coming when they agreed to the terms of the last CBA. The absurd contracts that were handed out were handed out to attract/retain top talent. Right or wrong is not the issue. It is where they are now and it needs fixing. The players agreed to a 50/50 split, and 300 million for make whole. What are they holding out for that it is worth risking their salaries? Five year limits on contracts? Really! The league has said that 5 year limit on contracts is a hill they are willing to die in. The PA is screwed. They have zero leverage. What can they gain? Six year limit on contracts? Make a deal to minimize your loses boys. Billionaires vs millionaires. Who do you think can hold out longer?

Did you notice that the Boston Bruins are not represented on the player's negotiating committee? Billionaire Jacobs vs millionaire players.

Don't blame fehr for all this mess

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8732678/donald-fehr-nhl-lockout

" in Detroit, the owner of the Red Wings, a pizza billionaire named Mike Ilitch, has decided to blackjack a new $650 million arena out of the city of Detroit for his $346 million hockey team. (In 1982, Ilitch paid $8 million for the team. This is an appreciation that one can, well, appreciate.) This naked swindle makes Ilitch a real sweetheart, seeing as how the financing for his new digs is going to come from tax dollars collected by Detroit's Downtown Development Authority, which, for more than 20 years, has been collecting money to pay down some general obligation bonds. Now that the bonds are paid off, the money was supposed to go to Detroit's decimated public-school system. Instead, it's going into Ilitch's arena."

"Nonetheless, Fehr was very good at protecting the gains that the MLBPA had made against almost constant attempts to roll them back. At the same time, he found himself doing so in a general social and cultural context in which seeing a union behave like an actual union was supposed to behave struck everyone silly with shock and wonder. Hell, after a while, most of the people following sports hadn't even been around when unions actually held substantial political power. Most of the NHL owners had become rich in the modern plutocratic system. In that system, the power of unions had been broken. Consequently, they were neither prepared, nor predisposed, to reckon with actual unions that had actual power, such as the ones that were operating among the teams they'd bought with their fortunes. (Mike Ilitch got rich in an industry that isn't unionized at all.) And most of the people covering the events in question were people who'd seen their unions squeezed dry by the financial-services cowboys who increasingly controlled the American media. Small wonder, then, that, when Fehr resisted mandatory drug testing at the beginning of the current drug frenzy, people behaved as though he were lining up players to personally shoot HGH into their keisters."

The only good thing, as one of those betrayed and annoyed hardcore fans, is knowing that businesses are cutting their NHL ticket expense budgets, that the NHL will suffer for this at least in the short-term when they return, and most importantly, that the Bettman and Daly have to sweat it out infront of these microphones, with their plan to have the game back on ice by now blowing up in their face, and knowing the tarnished legacy they are leaving.

I'd say it's more than a little naive. Because the things the owners are telling us are necessary will not save those struggling southern teams. Those teams, if they all stay put, will be in the same hole they're in now. Are players over-compensated? Absolutely. But going after their contracts and restricting future contracts will not create enough revenue to save the franchises in the red. Can it help? Yes, but it's not the answer. We'll be back in the same spot because Bettman will never admit his expansion mistakes. Winnipeg is proof how successful relocation can be, especially from a market like Atlanta where NOBODY cared about hockey. I have nothing against southern fans but college football blows the NHL out of the water down there.

These types of deals were never supposed to happen according to the heavenly salary cap portrait Bettman painted for us after the last lockout. Remember when he told us if they just got a salary cap, in-season costs would decline drastically, ticket prices would plummet, and we'd never again see mid-level talent get ridiculous contracts? Then the men who led the charge for the last CBA started circumventing their own system and creating a marketplace where average players make superstar money. Was it the players handing out absurd contracts to themselves? Once again the league is telling us "if we just get 5 year contract limits, somehow those 13 teams in the red will be saved." They're not acknowledging the real issues in those markets, because it's easier to blame overpaid players than admit your mistakes.

Maybe I'm a little naive. I don't believe we'll be in the same place next time the CBA expires. Yes! They may have to tweak the CBA if the economic landscape changes. But! That's the only chance the owners have to fix inconsistencies in the agreement. If this CBA fixes the major issues/loopholes in the last CBA, then I suspect they'll have minor issues to fix next time. It's pure speculation, but, it's not more right to take money out of the owner's pockets.

If the owners "win" this negotiation then we'll absolutely have to deal with this bs in another 8-10 years. Bettman has set the precedent of the league using the lockout as its top bargaining tool. During the next lockout (if this ever gets settled and the league doesn't implode) the commissioner will come out and tell us that the players got a much better deal then we simple minded fans can comprehend, just like this year. He will tell us that in order for the league to remain viable and the struggling teams to re-enter the black the owners must take even more from the players. After all the players swindled them into an unfair percentage of HRR and forced the owners to sign the dotted line on their bulbous contracts. Because if the owners get everything they want, once again, it will not save the sunbelt teams. Substantial revenue sharing, a soft salary cap, relocation, or contraction would be much more viable solutions to improving the health of the NHL than raiding the players pockets. Even if the owners concede on certain issues we'll be back in the same situation when this CBA expires. It's a sad reality, and the NHLPA can do little to stop it, other than continue doing what it's already done. But then nobody wins.

I don't blame the players for wanting more out of this CBA. They folded after losing the 2004-2005 season. They conceded to the owners and played for little money during a period when revenue and economics were on the rise in all sectors. The NHL has a 10 year 200 billion Dollar TV deal with NBC Sports. Thay have a great TV deal with TSN in canada. The owners and Gary Bettman need to agree to one of the players proposals. They are not looking for baseball or football sized contracts. The owners got there way in the last round, but the league needs to cough up a little and get this game operating again. Its sad that they had one of there best revenue years and an amazing playoff season. Yet the owners and Bettman have no concern for the damage they are doing to their fan base.

I know times are tough, but with the money rolling into the league there should be a compromise to be reached. The Players haven't made nearly the crazy demands they did during the 2004-2005 lockout. Bettman and ownership need to give in this time and they will realize it will be for the benifit of the game and their fans if they do!
