Getty Images Anton Volchenkov has recovered from a broken foot that he sustained in mid-October as a member of the KHL’s Torpedo Nizhny, according to the Bergen Record.
He’s already resumed playing and should be available for the New Jersey Devils’ opening game if the season is saved. That also means that he’ll avoid a potentially messy situation.
Any player that’s injured while playing in another league during the lockout can be suspended without pay by their NHL club until they are fit to play. Before the work stoppage began, Volchenkov was projected to make $4.25 million this season.
Now it’s a moot point because he was able to recover before the union and NHL could agree to terms on a new CBA.
Volchenkov averaged 17:58 minutes per game with the New Jersey Devils last season and that number dropped to an average of 16:03 minutes during the 2012 playoffs. Even still, his all-around defensive contributions would have been missed by New Jersey if he was unable to play.
