Report: Lemieux, Crosby’s play to save the season

Dec 9, 2012, 6:51 PM EDT

Lemieux Crosby

When the player-owner meetings started on Tuesday, skepticism was quickly replaced by cautious optimism. The week still ended with disappointment, but perhaps months from now it will be seen as one of the key events that pushed the NHL and union towards a new CBA.

Even if that doesn’t prove to be the case, Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review suggests that Penguins co-owner Mario Lemieux, superstar Sidney Crosby, and NHL agent Pat Brisson were key players in the recent attempt to save the season.

Brisson is a longtime friend of Lemieux and represents Crosby and has reportedly kept in contact with both of them.

“We have been talking for a long time about what we can do to get the league back. Mario, myself, we could not sit back and watch without trying something,” Brisson said. “The timing had to be on our side.”

That time was around Thanksgiving when Brisson reached out to Lemieux.

“We talked, and we agreed that maybe now we should try something,” Brisson said. “What was our choice, to sit back and watch the season die?”

So Lemieux reportedly got in touch with fellow Penguins co-owner Ron Burkle and from there the Penguins reached out to other owners. Burkle also contacted NHL commissioner Gary Bettman to inform him that he and other moderate owners wanted a seat at the negotiating table.

On the other end, Crosby was supportive of the notion of a player-owner meeting and was one of the NHL’s representatives when the talks took place.

During Tuesday’s CBA discussions, Crosby and Burkle were described as the “voices of reason” by the Tribune-Review’s Rob Rossi.

Of course, it remains to be seen if we are truly closer to a deal. When the talks blew up on Thursday, Bettman said that the NHL’s recent compromises and the Make Whole proposal were off the table. The two sides also haven’t met since, although they have kept in touch.

On top of that, Crosby didn’t sound like a guy who had won anything after the talks. He recently discussed the possibility of him playing elsewhere because “this stuff is getting ridiculous.” Crosby also thinks that it will be hard to “get guys’ trust back after that.”

The NHL needs more franchises on Mexican cartel turf so that Delaware North-run concession stands can recoup hockey operations losses through their cash intensive business. Now why should the players get a cut of that when the NBA and NFL didn’t have to share?

  2. aklolzer - Dec 9, 2012 at 7:43 PM

SMD Crosby, you’ll never get me to like you!!!

    • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Dec 9, 2012 at 7:47 PM

      He must be devastated.

  3. 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Dec 9, 2012 at 7:49 PM

I think the sides are closer to a deal than Thursday would indicate. If you strip away Bettman’s hyperbole-laced temper tantrum you’ll see that the NHL was mad they did not get a yes or no answer to their proposal and that’s all. Saying that proposal is now off the table is just the league trying to talk tough. The two sides are cooling off and getting ready to find the middle ground between the league’s offer and the PA’s counterproposal (which will probably end up being the NHL’s offer with a few tweaks).

Class begets class. Super Mario to the rescue! And the kid! It’s the culture of the penguins. Like it or not, believe it or not.

    • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Dec 9, 2012 at 8:11 PM

Mario is all class. Sid says all the right things but still does some less than classy stuff on the ice. He’s better than in his first couple of years but could stil improve.

      • bobhpine - Dec 9, 2012 at 9:07 PM

More nonsense from the arbiter of “class,” mrdouchebagrisin.

Sid is going to work to improve on the class he lacks to please you and your Flyer fan lunkhead morons.

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Dec 10, 2012 at 12:31 AM

Do I know you? I guess I can humbly accept the title of “arbiter of class” because based on your comment you clearly don’t want it. Go Leafs Go!

  5. Doesnotmatter - Dec 9, 2012 at 8:12 PM

yes, we get it. Mario is not the bad guy, neither is Burkle, bla bla bla…….more PR. By the way, the lockout is not over.

  6. beerjunkie69 - Dec 9, 2012 at 8:15 PM

    Sid’s a douche bag.

    • islanders1 - Dec 9, 2012 at 8:30 PM

Your kidding right look at what the guy has done for hockey. Clearly one of the best players in the game today has scored some amazing goals that have lead to many championships. Guess your not a Canadian

  7. id4joey - Dec 9, 2012 at 8:35 PM

So why exactly does PHT take 4 or 5 days to report what I wrote? All my detractors can blow me.

    id4joey | Dec 5, 2012, 11:38 AM EST
Pat Brisson is playing a huge role as a mentor to Crosby. A lot of his input will be in the players presentation.

You should all be appreciative of the info I share with you. If PHT writes the article you all take it as the gospel.

    id4joey | Dec 6, 2012, 10:54 PM EST
Here s what’s happening as I write this comment. Crosby is in his room with a few boys, and Pat Brisson is going back and forth between the Pens co owners room and Crosby’s trying to patch the relationship.

    • AlabamaFanRollTide - Dec 9, 2012 at 8:44 PM

Why would all your “detractors” wanna blow you and take away Blomfeld’s only real purpose in life ?

      • id4joey - Dec 9, 2012 at 11:03 PM

blomfeld & id4joey are the same person.

      • AlabamaFanRollTide - Dec 10, 2012 at 3:08 AM

ok so you can blow yourself then… that what you’re saying?

    • zetaone - Dec 9, 2012 at 10:07 PM

Your ego is too big Joey. All the times you’ve copy and pasted your own past responses… Do you seriously like bookmark each website every time you comment so you can go back to sample from your “masterpieces”?

      • AlabamaFanRollTide - Dec 9, 2012 at 10:54 PM

        for once we agree zetaone

      • id4joey - Dec 9, 2012 at 11:02 PM

I have. F en good memory and even better sources. lol!

    • mrchainbluelightning - Dec 10, 2012 at 2:47 AM

“But Crosby, along with his agent Pat Brisson and Penguins co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle together have the credibility on all sides to encourage dialogue and allow hard-liners to soften without losing face.”

So you’re taking quotes from Michael Grange, and passing them off as your own? Word for word

      Funny stuff

      • id4joey - Dec 10, 2012 at 6:58 AM

It simply confirms the integrity of my sources. You should be questioning PHT why it takes them 4 days to report old news. I have quoted journalists in the past, and always add a note indicating as much. So, you wanna play the investigator. Good for you! Don’t do it half ass.

Funny, It’ also confirms you’re a needy lil boy who steals others work and passes it off as your own.

      • id4joey - Dec 10, 2012 at 2:58 PM

mrchainblue, Following your Perry Mason logic I guess Rossi & Dadoun stole my work and made it their own. LOL! To funny.

      • mrchainbluelightning - Dec 10, 2012 at 3:42 PM

Learn the difference between two, too, and to next time you’re off your meds and suffering some sorta personality disorder which is the only thing that would explain your posting other peoples articles (word for word) and calling it your own.

Deep in denial and suffering some sort of needy personality complex isn’t funny bro.
        You’re scary

    • valoisvipers - Dec 10, 2012 at 9:41 AM

Yes siree folks our friend Joey and his sources are right on the money again, It is truly amazing and we get to hear it first from Joey then confirmed like the gospel by PHT. Come on folks a slow clap for Joey is in order.

      • id4joey - Dec 10, 2012 at 1:40 PM

valoisvipers, I’m too lazy to reset my browser and give you hundres of thumbs up. lol! are you following the saga of the mob in your city?

      • valoisvipers - Dec 10, 2012 at 2:43 PM

Yeah Joey we are really into it, right up to the eyeballs. I hope it gets better but the more things change the more they remain the same. Kinda like the lockout.
I guess we should find out soon about cancelled games or is no news good news?
Perhaps a deal is closer than we think or will these stubborn asses take us to the brink?

      • id4joey - Dec 10, 2012 at 2:57 PM

Following your Perry Mason logic I guess Rossi & Dadoun stole my work and made it theirs. LOL!

    • ibieiniid - Dec 10, 2012 at 10:00 AM

      i’ve never seen a Up/Down ratio like this. 2 Up, 556 Down.

i guess tooting your own horn is frowned upon. i agree.

      • id4joey - Dec 10, 2012 at 1:34 PM

do you actually believe 555 person thumbed down the comment? How gullible. I guess you’re not much of tech geek. BTW, many who have predicted the financial meltdown in 2008 have tooted and are still tooting. Nothing wrong with tooting, and taking it like a man when you screwed up. Surely you have more interesting to say about the negotiatons and the game. Yes?

      • ibieiniid - Dec 10, 2012 at 2:25 PM

considering how pompous your post was…. ya. i do.

you’re not an expert. you’ve been wrong way more than you’ve been right. tooting your own horn (somebody else’s horn*, since you just read news on another site and post it here and say you’re early to the reporting party) as a commenter on somebody else’s story is pretty lame IMO.

if you’re some sort of expert hockey reporter, where’s your columns? where’s your blogs? what owners/players have you talked to during this lockout? you produce BS to the max. you re-report one thing from somebody else and we’re supposed to think you’re god and take everything you say as fact now? get over yourself.

      • valoisvipers - Dec 10, 2012 at 2:47 PM

ibieiniid and just where was your something more interesting to say about the negotiations and the game.errrrr…yeah thought so. Post something useful.

      • ibieiniid - Dec 10, 2012 at 3:18 PM

i don’t claim to be a writer either dikbag. I’m not acting like I have my own column in a comment. this guy isn’t out reporting. he’s sitting at his computer like the rest of us… except he’s acting like he’s got some inside sources and touting “his” victories. it’s frankly pretty pathetic.

try to find me glorifying my own work…. in any venue. you won’t.

      • id4joey - Dec 10, 2012 at 4:51 PM

Ibieiniid, these writers or no more hockey experts than anyone here. Firstly, WTF is a hockey expert? Mike Milbury, Garth Snow, Jeremy Jacobs. Writers? They went to school to learn the politics of being journalists, not to become hockey experts. So, grow a pair and take a stance. This is a message board… Oh! A public message board in case you missed. I could be wrong, and when I am, it’s my sources fault. LOL! Keep clicking on this site because its actually good for their business.

Bobhpine is a bigger douche than Sid himself. What a hog smoker.

  9. andyisfat - Dec 9, 2012 at 10:13 PM

Cindy Criesby needs to wipe the brown stuff off of her nose.

  10. chrisk61 - Dec 9, 2012 at 10:15 PM

mario is an icon. sid aka cyndi is a whiny, diving, one hit away from lights out girl who won’t finish fights that she starts.

  11. hotloinsofsid - Dec 9, 2012 at 10:46 PM

soup can sid owns all of your mothers. hes the greatest sports icon since mario. like it or not. the franchise has spoken. Sca stay thick

  12. fortwaynekomets - Dec 10, 2012 at 3:50 AM

CROSBY IS THE ONE HOLDING UP THE LOCKOUT! He and Ovechkin feel they deserve royalty treatment.

“I just wanna play”….. for ONE BILLION DOLLARS! muHAHAHAa! (in my best Dr. Evil voice)

  13. dbarnes79 - Dec 10, 2012 at 11:18 AM

Just get it done or cancel the season already.

  14. ndrick731 - Dec 10, 2012 at 11:29 AM

So a Pittsburgh area reporter on a Pittsburgh newspaper is reporting that the Penguins are trying to be the civil nice boys in the room and of course national media picks it up. Blah blah blah Lemieux is trying to save the season that everybody else is trying to destroy, Crausby is the only player with balls enough to try and straighten this out and he’s the only one that wants to really play. If it wasn’t for the Penguins the league would fold. Blah blah blah. What is the national media going to do when Crosby takes another cheap shot at somebody and gets his head bashed through the glass and ends his career. Please do everybody a favor and stop trying to promote everything Pittsburgh in hockey as the greatest thing that ever happened.

    • valoisvipers - Dec 10, 2012 at 2:53 PM

At least they tried and Fehr even said there was a deal but of course he lies like a cheap rug. I don’t care if it’s Snider and Giroux or Mario and Sid that strikes the deal just do and do it soon.
