As this has dragged on, I’ve found I am blaming Jeremy Jacobs more than Gary Bettman for the reason we do not have the NHL so far this season. The guy just appears to be a spoiled brat who doesn’t care what his actions are doing to the sports’ fans, employees, etc.

Jacobs should NOT have been allowed to be one of the 6 owners involved in these meetings. Any of the other NHL owners would’ve been preferable.

Next time, sub Ed Snider or anyone else in for Jacobs. At least Ed wants us to have hockey and has wanted to avoid this stalemate from day one.

Just that I informed you thusly.

Nearly single-handedly ended talks yesterday, thinks he speaks for everyone there.
“Let’s leave” and Daly confirming this idea by saying “it’s up to you”. Daly doesn’t make any attempt to calm Jacobs down. Simply ready to pack up and leave the second Jacobs is ready to poison the talks.

Which was his plan.

@lostpuppysyndrome you are probably right – given what is reported to be a very open dialogue between Fehr and the members. There is a point where you have to cut the noise of the masses and let the leaders to the work. But, the longer this goes on, the better Fehr’s going to have to sell his stance. And I know the NHL is hoping for that.

The latest now is that the NHL will break from tradition by starting on Christmas Day and that tickets for these games are to be “heavily” discounted by as much as 75% ! … look for “the announcement” to be made sometime during the next 24-36 hours …

@cweez2, that’s a good question but I don’t think it’s as big of an issue. I say that mostly because the players haven’t been muzzled and a lot of them have been fairly vocal. I haven’t seen anyone stand up for Hamrlik’s stance yet. Maybe that’s out of fear or whatever, but most NHL players have never struck me as the kind of guys who sugarcoat things or hold back their convictions because of what others might think (unless you’re Swedish. Those guys are too dang nice sometimes).

In fairness, I’ll ask this: how much of the NHLPA’s actions are being dictated by a small number of players with much bigger stakes? Say what you will, but Roman Hamrlik had a point – what if you put this to a vote of the players?

I should add he reminds me of Tyrion Lannister. Incredibly smart and conniving, knowing who to play, and never letting on to his actual plans until they come to fruition, yet still capable of doing good and having a heart. Managing all those league personalities and egos must be like herding cats, so at the same time I do cut the guy a little slack for being in that position.

Exactly. At first I didn’t put much of the onus on him, figuring he’s just the mouthpiece for the owners. Once I learned that little bit of information about how few owners he needs to support him to stay in power, my opinion of the guy turned a bit darker. I don’t know all the details but as long as he pleases just a handful of owners on any given issue, he’s secure. I can’t even imagine how bad he’d have to bungle things up before he gets the boot.

And that’s the sick thing. Bettman’s coup to require a supermajority to overrule him didn’t guarantee his power. It guaranteed a permanent ride on the gravy train and Bettman only had to please a FEW people, making his job easier.
