Report: Penguins’ co-owner, Crosby acted as “voices of reason” during meeting

Pittsburgh Penguins co-owner Ron Burkle and star Sidney Crosby acted as important “voices of reason” during Tuesday’s CBA meetings, Rob Rossi of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

Despite their shared urge to end the lockout, Rossi reports that Burkle and Crosby aren’t willing to break ranks with their sides altogether. Instead, the goal is to find common ground so that they can strike a deal.

If attempting to do so ruffles some feathers, both Burkle and Crosby indicated it would still be worth the risk.

In addition to the peace-keeping efforts from Burkle and Crosby, Penguins icon/co-owner Mario Lemieux, CEO David Morehouse and Crosby’s agent Pat Brisson have also been trying to work something out this week.

Specifically, Rossi reports that Crosby, Burkle and Lemieux privately discussed ways to find labor peace for weeks and Lemieux has also been brainstorming with figures such as Steve Yzerman.

The two sides still have work to do, yet many might wonder how much credit the Penguins (and especially Crosby) deserves. Puck Daddy’s Greg Wyshynski, for one, writes that “there’s no question [Crosby] deserves credit thus far for his effort.”

Credit for what exactly?? 79 days of lockout? The rift between players and owners? I fail to see where credit is due on either side

Typical philthy faithful response^^^ ha where is snider helping with the negotiations? After the article was put on here about how he wanted the lock out and then he denied it all the flyers fans were in hear screaming how he is the best owner ever. No one from philthy is even involved in talks and you want to complain about the people trying to save the season. Grow up philthy it gets old.

The only owner in the whole entire NHL from day 1 that didn’t want to lock the players out was terry pegula from the Sabres.. Say what u want about the team but they were the only franchise to hold all off there off sight events, charity golf, hospital visits.. With out canceling all u guys want to say that your team and owners are the best and there taking credit..Where were they in the beginning.. or months ago haha.. Why don’t you guys continue to pretend the flyers and the penguins have the best rivalry in hockey and keep being idiots about it.

lets say we just reconvene in the spring??

Other players would have no right to be mad at Crosby if he broke ranks. He’s one of the few players in this league that can bring in revenue, and he brings in the most. All of the other anonymous players making millions are just riding the gravy train that Bettman created and that is sustained by Crosby.

    • tatdue - Dec 5, 2012 at 10:36 AM

Can I have some of what you’re smokin’ please?

      • travishenryskid - Dec 5, 2012 at 11:13 AM

First of all, probably 90% of the league is replaceable and the league wouldn’t skip a beat without them as long as they employed the top 10% of players in the world. If you take my favorite team, the Buffalo Sabres, there is not one single player who is a draw in opposing arenas, except maybe Miller, and they have the highest payroll in the league. If any player left the NHL because he thought there was somewhere better to be, nobody would blink and they would simply be replaced by another player who would then earn millions despite not truly being worth it. If the NHL started to lose players like Crosby and Stamkos and a few others, all of a sudden these replaceable players are less appealing and wherever the top players are is more appealing. The NHL becomes irrelevant (even more so), they stop earning, and the bottom 90% can’t make what they do now.The reason these lesser players make money is because Bettman grew the league during the 90s and 2000s, and players like Crosby play here. It’s that simple. I love Tyler Myers, but that guy isn’t selling a single ticket outside of Buffalo. Without the best of the best, they are a minor league.

Just say it happened again. Right valoisvipers?

    Dec 4, 2012, 11:11 PM EST

Just got off the phone with a voice in NY. Things are moving well. Players are slowly realizing that things won’t get much better than what the owners offered. Will the players finally see the f***ing light. Now, if there isn’t a deal by Friday, we may see another week cancelled, which will be a very positive sign. Will the season start Dec 21 thanks to our man Sid?

I do not like Sidney Crosby (because of the whole Pens-Caps thing) but I admire and respect the hell out of him. He is one of us. He wants hockey back more than anybody. He’s the best player in the world, and his talents deserve to be showcased. He is great for the sport, and it is showing on and off of the ice. Keep up the good work, Sid and Co. Lets get this show on the road!

Only true hockey fans can say something like this.

  8. steelpenbucs87 - Dec 5, 2012 at 10:02 AM

I don’t care if the credit goes to Crosby, Burkle, Lemieux, Yzerman, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Joe Yerdon, or the Green Guys from Vancouver – just get it done so we can have a season!

  9. lionstigersandwingsohmy - Dec 5, 2012 at 10:07 AM

Thank god for the saviors of the NHL, Sidney Crosby and the ownership of the Penguins. Are we really to believe that all this lockout took was those two getting together to lead the sheep?

    • bcjim - Dec 5, 2012 at 11:17 AM

I think the centrists/realists on both sides have turned a corner and are fed up with the unsuccessful and destructive antics of Jacobs et. al. and Fehr.

Maybe Sid and Burkle have provided figures to rally around. Hamrlik and others tried it but got btchslapped because they were nobodies which made others unwilling to stand up to the goons.

Sid and Burkle (the real owner of the Pens, not the figurehead Mario) cant be pushed around like Hamrlik and the Winnipeg owners.

Wherther all this leads to a deal….No idea.

Is this some kind of ploy to make Crosby look like a hero? Cuz I don’t really care. I’m still going to dislike him.

  11. ducksk - Dec 5, 2012 at 11:15 AM

Sid all class all the time. Like it or not.

  12. rushledger - Dec 5, 2012 at 11:30 AM

I wish people would keep their I don’t like Sid no matter what attitudes out of stories like this he’s trying to do what he can to get the NHL going again, we all love hockey so lets give the man his credit and not needlessly bash him.

  13. lsxphotog - Dec 5, 2012 at 12:07 PM

I’m by no means a Corsby fan…but this lockout has shown in him a different light to me. One that shows his appreciation for the sport. Once he slips on the Pens sweater…the hatred will resume. :)

  14. myroncopesflask - Dec 5, 2012 at 3:28 PM

Sid really earns every penny of his contract.

  15. fortwaynekomets - Dec 5, 2012 at 4:24 PM

yeah NO CRAP Sidney Crosby would be the VOICE as he is the HIGHEST PAID PLAYER IN THE NHL that attended the meeting. HE KNOWS the lower paid guys are sick and tired of fighting so he and Ovechkin get there extra millions.

Guys, don’t get your hopes up about hockey starting soon. I don’t mean to be negative, just a realist. we’ve been slapped, run over by the league, then spit on by Bettman, all so he could get a few extra lines of Coke and an extended massage. Don’t ever forget this, you so called fans. however, I have helped real fans get through this time of shame, so ill share a lil secret of the best place to watch hockey (College, CHL, ECHL, etc.) its all on America One Sports online. Best thing ever during a NHL lockout!!! Don’t go calling Sidney Crosby a hero now. he should have been doing this MONTH’S ago!!!
