Do I think Jacobs has been taken by three spirits in the night and woke up as anything but a ruthless owner who sees the lockout as a personal struggle he must win at the expense of his fans, business, and own bottom line? I thought about it but even the flying pig told me no chance in a frozen hell. That being said, denial is commonplace before deals go down. It’s so hard to maintain a shred of optimism on these message boards…

I’d still like to know how this report came about. From what I’ve read, Burton has been in the Boston market for years. To go public with a story that has no basis or credibility can do a lot of damage to your reputation. It’s not like he’s some kid out of journalism school trying to make a name for himself.

I think because of what Daly said & what would need to happen if a deal was actually coming. If there was any truth to it Daly wouldn’t have said “not a single morsel”, he’d have just said something like “Of course our hope is to come to an agreement but as of now we don’t” because they’d be foolish to turn down good press, which an imminent deal would be. They have a season to sell & that’s as much of an uphill battle as the labor deal was, not just because of the angry feelings from the lockout, but they will be starting the season in a very busy & competitive time in sports. Owners already hated having to start their season competing with the start of NFL season & MLB postseason, this will be much worse. They could’ve used all the positive press they could get.

How about this? I will stay away from Ducks games for the entire season.

No matter what, fans should stay away from first 2 or 3 games to prove a point.

The Fans are soooo taken for granted on both sides.

Because I would love to see this be true, I think it might be worth noting that Burton was the first to break Kessel’s cancer story, and at first nobody believed that either. So he’s shown he has an informed source someplace in Boston that others do not. Maybe his source has seen Jacobs undergo an Ebeneezer Scrooge-like transformation into a benevolent man who wants to end the lockout for the greater good?

So much of that report didn’t pass the smell test. Who were the “high ranking” officials? They don’t say. What concessions/deals were made to move to an agreement? They don’t say. Where did they meet? They don’t say. I would love to believe it, but I think this reporter got burned by his source.

I do think it would be deliciously wonderful if the owners and players could get a deal done. Could you imagine the egg on Bettman and Fehr’s faces if that happened? I giggle with glee just thinking about it. Not that it’s wildly improbable or anything…

You hear there’s an agreement on the day BEFORE they meet/talk for the first time in days & you don’t bother trying to confirm before you run with it despite how unlikely it seems? That’s pretty irresponsible journalism on the part of WBZ.
