Crosby pleased with Burkle’s participation in meeting: “Ron is a great owner”

It’ll be a unique situation when Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby and owner Ron Burkle sit across from one another during Tuesday’s labor meeting.

But it’s a situation Crosby is looking forward to.

“Ron is a great owner,” Crosby told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “He wants everything to be first class and he cares about everyone in the organization.

“He only wants what’s best for the team.”

Crosby confirmed what many were speculating on Monday — he will be one of the players sitting in on Tuesday’s meeting, to be held at 2PM ET at the Westin New York at Times Square.

No. 87 will be joined by 17 other players: Craig Adams, David Backes, Michael Cammalleri, B.J. Crombeen, Mathieu Darche, Shane Doan, Ron Hainsey, Shawn Horcoff, Jamal Mayers, Manny Malhotra, Andy McDonald, Ryan Miller, George Parros, Brad Richards, Martin St. Louis, Jonathan Toews and Kevin Westgarth.

The group will sit down with Burkle and five other owners: Boston’s Jeremy Jacobs, Winnipeg’s Mark Chipman, Calgary’s Murray Edwards, Toronto’s Larry Tanenbaum and Tampa Bay’s Jeff Vinik.

The Tribune-Review reports that many Penguins players expressed a loyalty to Burkle and co-owner Mario Lemieux prior to the meeting, and that many agreed Burkle’s selection was a positive development.

As Brough mentioned in his profile of the owners, Burkle was once named “Man of the Year” by the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor (he’s also been named the AFL-CIO’s Humanitarian of the Year).

“He is committed to giving us a chance to win every year,” Crosby said.

Ron’s great…it’s the other owners who stink. Well played, Sid. Well played.

Kevin Westgarth isn’t a player, he’s a no talent goon.

    • bruins1990 - Dec 4, 2012 at 2:24 PM

…who has a degree from Princeton. Not at all surprised he and George Parros are there.

  3. desertfan - Dec 4, 2012 at 1:48 PM

    2012= 57-43 Cap as is
2013= 56-44 Cap where it ends up
    2014= 55-45
    2015= 50-50

    Max 8 year contracts

    Free agency remains as is

Entry level goes to 4 years

All existing contracts to be honored in full.

    • id4joey - Dec 4, 2012 at 6:56 PM

Terrible, terrible, terrible. Back diving contracts have to end now, and be retroactive. No contracts longer than 4 years. There are too many floaters making over 2 million and can barley hit the side of a barn with a shot from 20 feet out. Eliminate RFA, and go 50/50 or shut down the league. Break the union now.

Joey, do you have multiple personalities to go along with your multiple logins or are you just lonely?

    • id4joey - Dec 4, 2012 at 3:46 PM

I’m a depressed, lonely, overweight, diabetic very old man suffering from insecurity, and a narcissistic. I know nothing about nothing let alone hockey. What’s you excuse for being irrelevant?

I’m not going to be negative, but I’m not too optimistic today.

I’ve been let down too many times over the last 2 months. my last bit of hope was taken about a month ago.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I’m doing fantastic without NHL. and its all due to America One Sports online where you can watch any College, CHL, or ECHL games + many more! I am obviously a diehard of minor league hockey, and I can honestly say this is the most talent stacked ECHL I’ve ever seen! Go Komets!!!

I love this. A player complains in the media about an owner or owners and gets raked over the coals for it. A player is conciliatory or complimentary towards and owner in the media and he’s a kiss-ass.

  11. dbarnes79 - Dec 4, 2012 at 2:59 PM

Seems strange to me that mostly high school educated players can make progress with highly educated businessmen who mostly went to very good universities.

  12. acieu - Dec 4, 2012 at 3:55 PM

Agree he is a kiss ass

    • kitshky - Dec 4, 2012 at 6:25 PM

So …is the Los Angeles County Federation of Labour and the AFL – CIO a bunch of kiss asses too?

Burkles is a well respected business man and humanitarian, if Crosby had said anything different you’d be on him for not respecting the hand that feeds him. Honestly, can you children think of anything besides hating Crosby?

  13. acieu - Dec 4, 2012 at 6:35 PM

Crosby being a kiss ass doesn’t mean he’s a bad player he just likes to kiss his owners ass. He is a suck up who can put he puck in the net although not as often as Evgeny.

  14. whatthepuck2012 - Dec 4, 2012 at 7:18 PM

    Kitshky thank you.

  15. id4joey - Dec 4, 2012 at 7:38 PM

Sources tell me the owners/players are breaking for diner and talks will resume later. They key contributing owners are Tannenbaum and Burkle. Lemieux is in the house with Geoff Molson, Pat Brisoon, Luc Robitaille, Bergevin, Shanahan, Daly etc…

    • kitshky - Dec 4, 2012 at 8:07 PM

For the last time, the voices in your head are not “sources”…

  16. whatthepuck2012 - Dec 4, 2012 at 8:07 PM

Always a good sign when no one stomps out in a snit after 10 minutes.

  17. id4joey - Dec 4, 2012 at 8:28 PM

Oh! Right! Voices in my head tell me the owners/players are breaking for diner and talks will resume later. They key contributing owners are Tannenbaum and Burkle. Lemieux is in the house with Geoff Molson, Pat Brisoon, Luc Robitaille, Bergevin, Shanahan, Daly etc…

These same voices will be a story here on PHT in a day or two. Happened before and will happen again. The great Joey has spoken.

  18. id4joey - Dec 4, 2012 at 10:12 PM

valoisvipers, lol. What do you think? Is hockey coming?

    • valoisvipers - Dec 5, 2012 at 9:51 AM

Yes Joey I do believe we will have hockey,NHL hockey, In the past I posted a Dec 10th as a deadline for a deal to be in place or scrap the season, However after reading that a 46 game season once started on Jan 20th, that left me feeling we could still have a season 5-6 weeks after my Dec 10th deadline. I must be truthful when I first heard the league’s original proposal I thought no way will there be a season and now thanks to yours and Blomfeld’s optimism and knowledge I have slowly come around and do believe in miracles,Santa and a NHL season.

Hopefully the hockey season can wait until after February when the Super Bowl is over. That way all the sports news coverage can be focused fully on the NFL. Then the focus can shift to hockey.

I don’t buy a cancelled season non sense. If they got 15 games left, play it out, base the playoff bracket on record and tie breakers, and crown the next Stanley Cup winner. There will be an * for whoever wins but who cares.

    Go Sharks!

  21. joewilliesshnoz - Dec 5, 2012 at 9:55 AM

Nice to see the Pittsburgh guys so involved, considering the next party with the Stanley Cup will be at one of their houses !
