Nugent-Hopkins, MacKinnon notable Team Canada junior camp invitees

Edmonton’s Ryan Nugent-Hopkins headlines the list of 37 invitees to Team Canada’s World Junior Hockey Championship selection camp, which begins next Monday in Calgary.

Making the squad would be a first for Nugent-Hopkins. He was a late cut from the 2010 team and was in the NHL with the Oilers last year.

Other invitees who may have been playing in the NHL if not for the lockout include forwards Mark Scheifele (Jets), Jonathan Huberdeau (Panthers), Ryan Strome (Islanders), and Boone Jenner (Blue Jackets), as well as defenseman Dougie Hamilton (Bruins).

Forward Nathan MacKinnon, the likely first overall pick in the 2013 draft, was also extended an invite, along with four other draft-eligible players.

Bruins goaltending prospect Malcolm Subban will battle three others for the starting job between the pipes. The position is considered Canada’s biggest potential weakness.

The tournament is set to run from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 in Ufa, Russia.

Canada won a disappointing bronze in the 2012 tourney held in Alberta, with Sweden beating Russia for gold.
