Report: Switzerland most likely destination for Crosby

Nov 30, 2012, 11:22 AM EDT

If Sidney Crosby gives up on the NHL and heads overseas to play hockey, sources tell the Ottawa Sun it will likely be in Switzerland, not Russia.

Why not the KHL? Apparently because of the risk he’ll be “targeted,” as well as the arduous travel demands.

Would Crosby actually be a skating bullseye if he were to sign in the KHL? That’s highly questionable. But to quote Remo from Casino before the bosses decided to clip Andy Stone, why take a chance?

(Casino was on TV last night.)

The Swiss league is already home to Canadian and American NHL stars like Joe Thornton, Rick Nash, Tyler Seguin, Patrick Kane, Dustin Brown, and John Tavares.

Crosby looking “a little harder” at playing in Europe

Crosby craving competition, not scrimmaging

  1. shotzongoal - Nov 30, 2012 at 11:29 AM

Something that still irritates me is that 225 European leagues players were forcibly displaced by NHLPA union members. Now Crybaby will take another players job. These union members abandoned their teammates for their own self preservation. The only comments you read about this group is not about getting a deal done, but that they may stay in Europe even if a deal gets done. Also, we as fans made these guys what they are today; yet they are playing in Europe for less than they would have earned playing for you and me in North America even using the NHL’s 43% offer. KHL players are playing for 35% less than their NHL contracts. Now add in insurance costs!

I know where we can find 225 replacement players if the NHLPA decertifies. There are also about 100 NHL players playing in the AHL that would love to move back up. Sorry about the rant but I want hockey dammit!!

  2. furkmyster - Nov 30, 2012 at 11:57 AM

It would be epic if Crosby were to go to Switzerland and get accidentally on purpose concussed again. To play for pennies on the dollar there instead of taking what the owners offered and continued growing the game here.

  3. shoobiedoobin - Nov 30, 2012 at 12:12 PM

And get shut down by Zetterberg for a third time? Some guys I tell ya, just gluttons for punishment.

    • sportsfreak13 - Nov 30, 2012 at 12:18 PM

90 points in 68 playoff games. What a bum.

      • shoobiedoobin - Nov 30, 2012 at 12:22 PM

Makes Zetterberg locking him down more impressive, no? I didn’t question his point totals.

      • zetaone - Nov 30, 2012 at 2:11 PM

I feel Giroux did a better job locking down Crosby last year. Granted it may have come with some controversy.

I’m a Sabres fan (verifiable in pasts posts) so this isn’t flame bait lol..

      • joshuakorr - Dec 2, 2012 at 12:13 AM

I fact-checked this and you’ll all be relieved to know that zeta zone is in fact a sabres fan.

  4. sportsfreak13 - Nov 30, 2012 at 12:27 PM

I wouldnt say he really locked him down. More like mildly contained. Correct me if im wrong but he still managed nearly a point per game in that series in 09 against detriot didnt he?

    • shoobiedoobin - Nov 30, 2012 at 12:33 PM

3 points in 7 games. And 2 came in a single game. And that’s just going by stats. Watching tells the whole story-he was shadowed. And that’s with him being allowed to hook and hold, while no one was allowed to graze him lest they catch 2 or less.

      • sportsfreak13 - Nov 30, 2012 at 12:38 PM

None the less zetterburgs efforts were futile because that year he become the youngest captain to lift the cup. Love him or hate him he still is a champion and had 3 points less then the Conn smythe winner in malkin that year.

      • shoobiedoobin - Nov 30, 2012 at 12:49 PM

Little Lord Bettman wasn’t about to let the league’s investment lose twice in a row. The team in yellow played with a different set of rules compared to the team in red. I wouldn’t be very proud of that win. But that’s hockey-officiating has long been broken and games come down to the whim of whatever stripe wants to sway one way or another. Much like LA this year.

      • sportsfreak13 - Nov 30, 2012 at 1:03 PM

Haha i love fans like you who say crosby whines and cries and yet when i read your last post all i hear is “WHAAAAAA they let them win”!Learn to take a loss like a man and not blame some stupid consipiracy theory. I feel sorry for people like you if you REALLY think the league picks their champions every year and is out to make sure they win the cup. By that theory i guess detriot only won all those cups because bettman felt bad they had to live in detriot.

      • shoobiedoobin - Nov 30, 2012 at 1:29 PM

Saw that reply coming a mile away. You’re in denial if you think sports are fair. No one’s fixing it like wrestling but the league has certain financial interests in some teams far more than others. And it’s not like Detroit was the only one clearly screwed-Buffalo in 07, Phoenix was blatant this year against LA. It happens. That’s sports. Hell, that’s life. But asking a sports fan to question their league is like asking a fanatic to question his or her faith. It’s too tough a pill to swallow for most.

      • sportsfreak13 - Nov 30, 2012 at 1:37 PM

Agree to disagree.Referees are humans and there is a human error element involved. The great teams overcome the “bad calls” and “missed calls” , the rest are left to wonder what could of been.

      • sportsfreak13 - Nov 30, 2012 at 3:18 PM

If your conspiracy theory of the league playing favorites is true then why have LA beat Phoenix when the league owns Phoenix?

    • shoobiedoobin - Nov 30, 2012 at 4:28 PM

LA is a bigger market. More money. The league owns the Yotes the way a parent has to house an idiot kid with no job until it’s time for him to go. The LA market is massive and getting in sweet would be extraordinarily profitable. Phoenix? Ehhh, doubtful. We all know their fate. Owning them really is irrelevant. And you say this like I’m guessing or hoping lol. This is life bud, nothing’s fair. Too much to lose by letting things sort themselves out. I’ve read stories about egosystems of favortism from organized curling to refs in the NBA admitting to being paid off. Hockey is magically safe from the league knowing which team they’d prefer win.

      • shoobiedoobin - Nov 30, 2012 at 4:30 PM

      • sportsfreak13 - Nov 30, 2012 at 4:51 PM

If thats the case why do you watch sports then? I mean if everything is fixed to a certain degree and you the league plays favorites why do you support such behaviour? I personally think fans like you are conspiracy theorist butt hurt fans who grasp for anything they can latch on too in order to explain why their team lost rather then the simple and correct answer which is they got out played. I could sit hear and complain about reffing too (like briere’s clearly offside GW goal in game 1) which kick started the flyers winning that series but i wont because the flyers just straight beat us that series. Its human error my friend nothing more nothing else. I feel sorry for you because watching sports with that kind of mentality must be frustrating.

      • sportsfreak13 - Dec 7, 2012 at 12:13 AM

You need evidence when your calling out a professional sports league not some Internet troll.

    • shoobiedoobin - Dec 3, 2012 at 2:06 PM

You suspect I’m just a butt hurt fan? See what I mean about conspiracy theories being OK on one hand, but not OK on the other? Conspiracy theories are alright when it doesn’t make someone question something they’re afraid to question. I’ve seen enough proof that many instances were not human error. I’ve read about officials who point shaved and statisticians who admitted to fixing numbers. Hell, you live in Vegas long enough and you just laugh at people as naive and in denial as you who think everything is down the middle and fair. Kids have the Easter bunny, adults have the delusion that out of everything crooked and influenced in life, sports somehow escapes it all. Right. BTW, I didn’t even mention my team. So grasp at another straw.

      • sportsfreak13 - Dec 5, 2012 at 12:45 PM

Ok for the record me assuming your a butt hurt fan is a assumption not a conspiracy sooo yea. Im not saying that there arent incidents out there (primarily in basketball) where there was evidence of a ref cheating. What i am saying is that i dont believe the league pre picks its team that it wants to win and puts some invisible force (the refs) out on a agenda to make sure that happens. You completely avoided the question i asked though if you believe in such grand conspiracy in the sports world WHY WATCH AND SUPPORT IT?? And for the record it doesnt matter what team you root for but judginh by your theory if your team whoever that may be has won a cup before then its only because the league wanted them to. You cant have it both ways with your theory where the only legit champion is when your team wins and the rest are just hand picked by the powers that be.I understand everythign is not fair and right but i also understand everything is not fixed and corrupt.

      • shoobiedoobin - Dec 6, 2012 at 2:20 PM

Ok I feel like a bit of an idiot, I actually thought you were an halfway intelligent guy for a second. Then I see you butcher your and you’re, and try to tell me there’s a difference between a baseless assumption and a conspiracy theory. Same thing smart guy. I didn’t say anyone pre-picked teams, learn to read and go back and do more than skim over what I said before you write out your automatic-because-i’m-mad rebuttal. And who says I support? I watch for various reasons. And no, not all teams win because the league wants them to. You’re willfully failing to grasp anything I’ve said because you WANT me to be some mulder who thinks the NHL is like wrestling-it’s easier for you to shriek about me that way instead of having to actually think for once.

      • sportsfreak13 - Dec 6, 2012 at 4:24 PM

Sorry if i dont proof read my comments. Its kinda hard when im typing them on a iphone. My bad. I read everything you written quite clearly and you think there is favortism out there to certain teams and individuals. You feel that certain teams and players get away with more then others. What you fail to do however is have any shred of evidence of corruptness (in the NHL) other then the simple line “watch the tape and you will see all the missed calls or favortism). You find me a ref in the NHL who has been paid off then ill believe you. As of now your theorys have about as much weight as a UFO enthusist. How bad does it suck that more people agree with my statements (someone who isn’t even halfway intelligent) then yours? BYE!

      • shoobiedoobin - Dec 6, 2012 at 11:50 PM

Yeah you seem to be someone really concerned with evidence, considering you threw out a random garbage assumption about bias. Right. And I have self confidence and intelligent, you have to rely on the comfort in numbers from people who were never going to agree with me even though I’m right.

      • shoobiedoobin - Dec 6, 2012 at 11:51 PM

intelligence*. oops, must be the phone.

      • sportsfreak13 - Dec 7, 2012 at 12:16 AM

You need evidence when your calling out a professional sports league not some Internet troll.

      • sportsfreak13 - Dec 7, 2012 at 12:24 AM

You must be real self confident to thumb up your own post. Who else would be reading these comments this deep on a page 6 article.

      • shoobiedoobin - Dec 7, 2012 at 10:05 AM

Just keep making up the rules as you go along eh little fella? Just so it conveniently suits you and not me right? No, if you need cold hard evidence, you need it. Period. If I’m “just an internet troll” (nevermind that I’m right and you’re clearly wrong but are in too deep to swallow your pride) then don’t reply to me smart guy. I’ve owned you so thoroughly that it’s no wonder your stubborn pride keeps bringing you back.

      • sportsfreak13 - Dec 7, 2012 at 10:39 AM

hahaha i keep coming back because its entertaining to me to see you scramble to try and prove your point while tap dancing around the asnwer the entire time. If you owned me this whole time then show me the proof/evidence of corruptness in the NHL. DONT DANCE AROUND THE QUESTION AND JUST SAY YOUR RIGHT. Where is the evidence. The evidence that your a internet troll is on your first post where you baited people by saying “And get shut down by Zetterberg for a third time? Some guys I tell ya, just gluttons for punishment.”. Ok theres my proof now where is yours that says the NHL is somewhat corrupt and plays favortism with certain players and owners? By the way it looks like your stubborn pride keeps you coming back also. Some guys i tell ya, just gluttons for punishment.

  5. slclions - Nov 30, 2012 at 12:39 PM

good…now we dont have to hear him. All of Canada would like to thank the Swiss

    • shoobiedoobin - Nov 30, 2012 at 12:55 PM

I wonder how the Swiss will handle his poor attitude. I say just pay the translator to make stuff up.

  6. broadstbully33 - Nov 30, 2012 at 1:17 PM

If you would take your Pitt goggles off u would see the clear favoritism the NHL has towards Crosby and then pens. They get away with murder on the ice

    • shoobiedoobin - Nov 30, 2012 at 1:37 PM

So true. It’s so bad it’s gotten to almost an ironic point where people defend him just to play devil’s advocate.

    • Eberwizzle - Nov 30, 2012 at 2:12 PM

I’m a Flyers fan and that’s just a dumb comment. Kind of like all the fans calling 610 or 94.1 or whatever it is now saying everyone is against the Philadelphia teams.

    • zetaone - Nov 30, 2012 at 4:06 PM

Favoritism? You’re confusing them with Boston.

  7. westof1club - Nov 30, 2012 at 2:34 PM

I’m sure he just didn’t want to get plowed over by Ovi in the KHL where Gary & the NHL hold little clout to influence calls on the game’s stars. This only reinforces Crosby’s wuss factor.

  8. id4joey - Dec 1, 2012 at 6:29 PM

If he goes its because the season will be cancelled.

  9. tackledummy1505 - Dec 3, 2012 at 10:00 AM

F Crosby, probably the reason why we’re in a lockout still. All cause he wants to keep his $200,000 while 40 guys lose jobs to recession in the league. Thanks guy, by the way never liked you. You always seem too good for the sport. The NHL even had to give you a cup because of your fake dive penalty. See ya boss, stay overseas you wanna be Super Mario

    • shoobiedoobin - Dec 3, 2012 at 2:09 PM

So true. You go back and look at game 3 and 6 and you have to laugh at how badly they allowed Pitt to interfere, dive and grab while Detroit couldn’t breath on a Penguin. When we always talk about little things deciding games in sports, how can we ignore this being a huge reason why Pitt “won”? It’s as disgusting as Anaheim in 07 or LA beating the Yotes by getting away with murder.
