Not sure how many hockey players you’ve actually met but the vast majority of them are very successful post hockey, especially when compared to the other three major sports.

he’s right that the value of the league has gone up during Bettman’s tenure, but wrong to give Bettman credit for that. He was commissioner as pro sports came into the age of massive television contracts. the value of the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL all rose dramatically, regardless of who was running each league.

The fact that hockey remains so much less popular than less action-packed sports such as baseball and basketball in our blood-thirsty society should say more about Bettman than the rising value of the league that he’s had nothing to do with.

And yet, even by your numbers, which, while accurate don’t show the discrepancy between franchises as a commenter notes below, this “leader” is now “overseeing” his 3rd lockout (never before happened in history of professional sports) and the potential for another canceled season (a single season had never happened before in the history of professional sports).

Gee, surprising this happens when you hire an NBA guy to run a game he’s never in his life played.

Another lazy assed columnist. It isn’t that they lie they just write stories that are handed to them as plants because they won’t do real work. Besides they want interviews after Bettman stomps the NHLPA and they curry favors with the players by one sided reporting.

Id4 Joey makes a good point. The leafs are the first NHL club to be worth 1 billion dollars. That leads me to my next point, when is the last time the leafs competed for a top spot in the league? That prove that a lot of the teams top brass are in in for the money and not the cup; let alone the advancement of the league.

Just to tone down your numbers a little bit, the NHL, moreso than the other major 3 leagues is way top heavy. The top 3 teams account for over 25% of aggregate franchise value. Median franchise value is $220M.

Haggerty is a fraud. He took one tiny kernel of a story, extrapolated it using irrelevant information (Neely), and ignored the basic fact that for every missed NHL game his concessions company loses business. Joe Haggerty is not a journalist, he’s not a blogger: he’s a hack.

What’s happening this year is bad. However, the increase in the value of the NHL franchises indicate that Bettman has not been destroying the NHL from day one. You sound like a drama queen.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are the first NHL team worth US$1 billion, according to Forbes magazine. Forbes says the NHL’s total revenues were $3.4 billion for the 2011-12 season. Fueled by that nine per cent increase, the average NHL team is worth $282 million, 18 per cent more than a year ago. The Leafs, Rangers (last Stanley Cup in 1994) and Canadiens (last title in 1993) account for 83 per cent of the league’s income, with Toronto the most profitable franchise at $81.9 million, followed by the Rangers at $74 million and Montreal at $51.6 million.

I don’t doubt Haggerty’s assertion that Jacobs is the main driving force behind the lockout. Thats been suggested quite a bit, and while it really wouldn’t make much sense, there is a clear theam there.

However Jacobs is CLEARLY pro owner, so all his stories have to be weighted that way, and its very possible he jumped the gun with an anti-owner story without proper fact checking. I expect sports reporters to stay out of the whole “whos right, whos wrong” fight…. yet everthing he writes is about how the big bad owners want to send the poor players to the welfare line.

Both sides are to blame, and anyone (especially a reporter) who doesn’t think so is no worth listening to.
