Donald Fehr is talking about compromise? Seems that way

Donald Fehr meeting with the press last night before the Operation Hat Trick charity game in Atlantic City yielded some interesting thoughts from him on the lockout. One thing he did seem to stress, however, was compromise with the owners.

Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News highlights Fehr talking about trying to work the old give-and-take with the NHL.

“If the cap is going to be limited, the player contracting rights – which is where the individual player has an opportunity to get his share of the pie – have to be constricted too, those become more, not less, important to players as cap space is limited,” Fehr said.

“And so when you say we have to have with the right hand, and I’m going to give you with the left hand that’s one thing. If they say we have to take with the right hand and we’re gonna take with the left hand too, that becomes very difficult. When you add to that that the rights of the players they believe they must maintain are what they got in the last negotiation in return for massive concessions there, it becomes very difficult.”

Contracting rights has become the latest sticking point for both sides with the NHL unwilling to budge on what they’ve proposed.

Fehr coming out and talking about compromising with the league makes for good, positive ink for the players’ in this battle to portray the owners as sticklers. It’s also the one thing that can make sure a deal gets done.

Tempers flared, patience tested, people calling for decertification, but the process continues. The NHLPA wants contracting rights and the NHL wants a true 50/50 split and both will give back some.

    • blomfeld - Nov 25, 2012 at 11:37 PM

Trust me Mgp1219 … in the “real” world, a goof like you would be “face down” in the pavement with grievous head wounds right about now … as such is your luck that our exchanges here at PHT are only of an “electronic” bouquet … regardless, kindly take your worthless commentary and go “F” yourself together with your boyfriends Mudslinger, Mmcneels81, Tatdue and Windmiller …

      • mmcneels81 - Nov 26, 2012 at 11:46 AM

Hah. I thought I might find this here. Now you’ve taken to spamming your threats of violence and physical harm, verbatim, to other users. Pathetic, blomguy. Take it easy. Nut-up and grow a thicker skin.

      • tatdue - Nov 26, 2012 at 4:56 PM

Nice there blomfeld you condescending hypocrite……You’re the one always preaching about how you hate the people name calling one another and what not, then in one fell swoop you show your true colors and not only use you fowl mouth to attack mgp1219 and mmcneels81 but go on to attack 3 other people that have nothing to do with the on going conversation! Well right back at ya you F’tard….you are so pathetic, nobody with any brains ever agrees with anything you write so you invent a bunch of alter egos to pat yourself on the back and give you some thumbs up!…..How sad is that? And while I’m at it old man, you aren’t going to be putting anybody face down on the pavement any time soon so pull up your depends and leave the tough talk alone okay? Have a nice day :)

“Guys aren’t going to give in when it comes to contract stuff. It’s not going to happen,” – Sidney Crosby Nov 13, 2012

Now they are singing to a different tune. Looking for compromises as opposed to taking a hard stance. Are the players slowly realizing their bank account won’t grow at all this year if they hold the hard stance?

Yuppers, These missed pay checks are adding up in a hurry. Please remember to check out the face of a pan handler near you and give generously as it just might be one of these poor broke NHLers. Just how much again is 50% of zero

      • jollyjoker2 - Nov 28, 2012 at 6:51 PM

folks here don’t like your comments. Must be the players. Fact is, they have a short working career and in that span even with 50-50 split they still make a ton of money. Its like watching a power ball winner complain. The players better fire fehr cause he will lead his lemmings over the cliff ledge. the economy suffered the last few years and I doubt very many owners made money on this service line. Dig in owners and let em burn.

please read this article people who are pro-union,pro-owners and pro-anti-players and owners

jimw81 I live in Montreal and know first hand what an A-hole that Jack Todd is. He is the number one reason why people cancel their subscriptions with the Gazette. Read Todd, take many grains of salt then puke on the Gazette and place in garbage.

      • tatdue - Nov 26, 2012 at 5:20 PM

Considering The Gazette has been around for a couple hundred years and Todd has been with them for 26 years……..I’d say he carries a lot more pull than you! For people with brains that article makes a lot of sense……

Some of you guys need to take a Reading Comprehension course. Nowhere does he state the players are going to cave on contracting rights. The last 2 player offers (both of which the NHL rejected in under 1.5 hours of “negotiation” combined) have been heavily concession-laden. Fehr/the players already HAVE compromised. The NHL hasn’t given ground on a single thing. Remember when the NHL claimed to honor the make whole 100% on their end? Turns out that was an outright lie. Anybody on the owners side in this is either a pro-corporate Fox News viewer, or just plain stupid (and those two are not mutually exclusive).

You guys always whine about how much the players make, and then immediately start with the predictable prognostications of “the players are about to crack now that they’re missing checks!”. This isn’t the NFL or NBA. The players aren’t on the hook for 20 man entourages, dresser drawers full of bling, 10 different baby mamas, leech family and friends, mansions, and 10 different Ferarris. Notice you didn’t see a single NHL player on the ESPN special “Broke”. Notice you haven’t seen any NHL players on MTV Cribs. NHL players are a fiscally responsible bunch and they’ve been making arrangements to be without checks for some time. They’ll be just fine if they miss a season, just like they were last time.

I wish the players would just realize they have no leverage in this. Zero. Imagine going to your employer, AS AN EMPLOYEE, which is exactly what players are, and telling your owner that because he’s making more money, either he pays you more, or you walk. Your butt would be out the door faster than you could spit. The owner takes all the risk in running your company, you don’t. The owner is the one responsible for making your company viable, you’re not. You’re a contributor, and oh, by the way, you can be replaced. A little different in pro sports because people want to see the best perform. But at the end of the day, fans go to be entertained, to get away from real life for a few hours. I’m not a pro-owners guy, but I am a realist. The players have no leverage. The owners get their TV revenues whether they play or not. The players getting paid right now? Get your collective @$$es back on the ice. All you’re accomplishing right now is pi$$ing off your fan base.

donald fehr doesnt compromise or negotiate. His consession or only a win for him. Until the players fire him, they will not get this done.
