Question: why would any franchise head north to Canada?

Answer: same reason passengers on RMS Titanic dove into the freezing cold waters of the Atlantic … it was their best option available !

Tatdue – The bottom line is that assuming the NHL is “done” this year as so many here have been clamoring for, then suffice it to say that it’ll be heading into some pretty strong headwinds “whenever” it does return. As for Canada booming for the next 50 years ? … come on and please be real. Even two years ahead can no longer be considered long-term, given the “wild and exponentially” accelerating pace of our society as we know it today. Canada is definitely “blessed” with it’s resources no doubt, oil and water being chief among them. But in no way is the current status-quo as we know it, going to continue for much longer. Things are going to happen.

You are contradicting yourself blom….If as you say the Canadian dollar is going to go back down then why would any franchise head north to Canada? Besides that you are wrong about the Canadian dollar and economy anyways….I just read a report a few weeks ago that was saying that Canada is poised to lead all G20 countries in trade and economic growth for at least the next 50 years. I hope your financial adviser is not the same guy that gives you your insider hockey info…lol…..

Both parties are equally guilty of greed, no two ways about it. And they’re both guilty of falsely assuming that the game will simply pick up where it left off, once this “selfish” idiocy is resolved. Well too bad for them ! The fact is that the “key” reason for revenue growth over the past 7 years, has been the relative appreciation of the Canadian dollar vs the US dollar. This was in large part due to the previous worldwide economic upturn and subsequent demand for Canadian natural resources. That situation however will not continue. The world is again heading back towards retrenchment, with a subsequent drop in the relative value of the Canadian dollar vs the US dollar almost a given. Compounding that will be the inevitable northward migration of certain franchises to Canada and an increasing deterioration of disposable US household incomes.

sportsfan69- the players were locked out so it really isn’t their choice.
Bettman makes more than all but a handful of players.
The NHL is losing $18-20 million a day. Multiply that by how many days of the season have been missed so far. That is on the owners and Bettman, not the players.
Just the next round of games canceled will be a loss of $252-280 million. That is more than the gap in the latest NHLPA offer to the NHL.
Yes, Fehr is a self serving egomaniac, but Bettman is equally as bad.
If the players were on strike you could call them greedy, calling them greedy because they are being locked out and have offered numerous concessions to the owners already is ridiculous and uninformed.

Yeah,

I’m showing up the NHL owners, playing for peanuts, away from home with NO financial security.

As a player, you have to ask yourself. What the hell I’m doing here. I could have been playing by now. Damn it, instead of I’m making nothing now to protect the top 20 players. Who has my best interest for me and my family?????

Again, ask yourself that question. Who really has your best interest??

If the league dissolves or takes any further financial hits, does it really help me with my future salary?

Just ask yourself that question, if former players (Roenick, Jäger, Linden) say your going about it all wrong.
