NHL, NHLPA talking, but no official meetings planned

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman was hopeful on Wednesday that there would be some momentum in the CBA process following the NHLPA’s latest proposal. If there’s been any momentum since then, both sides have done a great job of hiding it.

Following the NHL’s rejection of the union’s offer, the possibility of the NHLPA decertifying has been discussed by both players and the media.

Meanwhile the NHL and union are still in contact with each other, but no official meetings have been planned, according to the Washington Times’ Stephen Whyno. The only silver lining is that the union and league are expected to converse over the phone again on Sunday or Monday.

This comes after the NHL scrapped all contests through Dec. 14 and the 2013 All-Star Game on Friday.

At the time, Fehr argued the cancellations were “unnecessary” and complained that the players “require a willing negotiating partner.”

We’ll see if the latest staring contest continues over the coming week or if the NHL and union resume formal negotiations in the near future.
