"So, how was 43% of $2.2B okay for the owners, but 43% of $3.2B suddenly isn’t"....I wish someone would ask Bettman and Daly that question.

I am sure that they couldn't give you a definitive answer. I am not taking sides in this stupidness but Bettman and Daly should be fired because of their miscalculations of the last CBA that put the owners back at the bargaining table again. If the argument is that Bettman and Daly didn't miscalculate and are just shaking the players down for money...than they should be fired just for that!

Here is what I have yet to see explained.

The players gave up a lot after the last strike, the NHL essentially go everything it wanted. Since then revenue has skyrocketed, the league made $1B more last year than they did 6 years ago. So, how was 43% of $2.2B okay for the owners, but 43% of $3.2B suddenly isn't....have non-player costs really increased faster than revenue? Seems highly unlikely.

The league has it self to blame for its finances, they over-expanded with owners pocketing 100% of expansion fees, those teams continue to struggle financially and the owners want the players to bail them out for the 2nd time in a decade. I'd love to see the league fold, the arenas sold off to a new group of owners and a new league formed with guys in charge of the business that know what they are doing.

Boy, thats a GREAT idea!! Yup,sign me up.. I want to go pay NHL prices to see NCAA hockey!! That sounds like a GREAT DEAL! Meanwhile all the big boys are over in Europe making just fine cash and we're all watching them on replays on ESPN and Live Streams Online. IF the NHL actually did what you suggested... they would be folded in 3 yrs tops! Your talking about a whole generation of players. Not just 2-3 yrs of change. Plus, when all the really good talent comes up they aren't going to go sign in the NHL when they are drafted... they'll get drafted by the KHL and go make twice as much. Because once the "real players" go overseas for good... all the money; i.e. Sponsors, TV Deals etc will soon then follow.

I get so sick of people on PHT actually suggesting that the NHL should use replacements... its a terrible idea has never worked anywhere else it was done. We're not talking about factory workers here, were talking about the best of the best 1% in the WORLD who play the sport. NOBODY watches hockey simply because theres a shark, a wing, a 'B' etc on the jersey... they watch because of the 'Name' on the back... they go to see Crosby, Ovie, Kovy, Parise, Nash, Malkin, Stampkos etc etc etc. All of you seem to think that if they (NHL) did do what you suggest suddenly the NHL would.... what... lower ticket prices??? YEAH RIGHT!! They would be asking the same if not MORE in order to make up for the losses of the lost season and the fact that nobody goes to games! Also, do all of you who post these things mean to say that your willing to pay NHL prices to watch low/mid level NCAA hockey players just because they're in a Wings, Canucks, Leafs, Ranger etc sweater?? (I say low/mid level because all the top players will follow suit with all the other top players right on over to the KHL/Europe)

I hear ya friend, but you simply can't do that. Or should I say you could, but then you're talking about throwing an entire generation out the window, which will take many years to replace.

The only way to have a fair deal for both sides and ensure the future of the NHL is to cancel the season.

That way ESPN can focus on the NFL and NBA seasons and keep the spot light off the NHL.

Like I've been saying all along, dump the NHLPA and hire college hockey players and set the pay scale and do not let it get out of control!

3-5 years from now, there will be new faces and stars as well as a new fan base. Gotta start from the ground and go up. The current structure is no good. It feels like they went on a lockout a couple years ago and are at it again?

NHL needs to make a bold move, lose some money for couple of years, gain a new fan base, and become profitable.

Just trying to keep it real brah.

I believe that this week is truly "make or break" time, as we're now getting to the point of < 60 game schedule which nobody wants or will even tolerate. And losing the entire season will be the equivalent of a "full" nuclear exchange. Therefore "something" has to happen this week ?
