Brian Burke is sleeping outside tonight, denies Luongo trade report

Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke is spending Thursday night on the streets of Toronto with just a sleeping bag and a piece of cardboard to raise funds and awareness about youth homelessness.

The charity’s he’s supporting, Covenant House, estimates there are 2,000 youth living outside on any given night in Toronto.

“It’s a real important cause in our city,” Burke said Wednesday on Sportsnet radio. “For one night we’ll face the conditions that face homeless youth in our city.”

Meanwhile, Burke is denying there’s a deal in place to acquire Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo once the lockout is over.

In October, Sportsnet’s John Shannon reported that a “reputable source” told him that Luongo would be traded to Toronto as soon as the NHL and NHLPA reach a new CBA.

Canucks GM Mike Gillis also denied the report.

Despite the denials, the deal does make sense. Toronto’s goaltending struggles have been well-documented, and if Tyler Bozak is available, the Canucks could be interested in acquiring his services to fill their third-line center opening.

Even if Don Cherry doesn’t think Luongo would want to go to Toronto.

Excuse, Excuse, Spin, Spin, Blinders on, Activated alternate reality.

“Burke is good, he’s provided the Leafs have the pieces for future success, playoffs are just around the corner, Kessel will re-sign, Phaneuf too, what me worry?”

    – Typical Leafs fans

The Leafs D has improved with the likes of Gardiner and Gunner back there. Riley should help, too. If they can shore up the goaltending position playoffs aren’t unrealistic. Playoffs wins? Less realistic.

I don’t understand why everyone thinks Phaneuf won’t re-sign (Kessel I understand). All I hear about him is that he’s overrated and generally useless. If that’s true then nobody else will want him. The boatload of money the Leafs throw at him will also be a factor. People tend to like lots of money.

      • mrchainbluelightning - Nov 15, 2012 at 1:00 PM

Tell you what, nearly every team has a Gunny, a slightly above average D man that’s a surprise and eventually becomes overrated by the homers within the fanbase. Jake is a nice D man no doubt, but actually throwing Carl out there? Typical.

So ya, Burke has put the Leafs in a position to potentially and most likely lose both Phaneuf and Kessel for nothing. Now I promise you, nearly every (good) GM in the NHL would be thinking they need to move both of these players. The would recognized the team isn’t going anywhere and they need to get something for these two players. But of course we all know Burke will refuse to do this and get upset at anyone who suggests otherwise. The Leafs will lose both players, Burke will be fired, and he will still act like it was everyone else’s fault but his own.

Now I know this reality and truth really gotta hurt, knowing that this is the leafs fate.
You keep hoping that any amount of money will keep either of these players to decide to get losing and keep getting torn apart on a shift by shift basis by the Toronto media.

But lets say the Leafs do keep them…

In 4 years of the Leafs top 9 forwards, how many of them would remain in the Top 9 if placed on, DET, SJ, BOS, NYR, BUF, CAR, oh it’s just easier to say not even half of the Leafs top 9 could crack the top 9 of half the NHL.

The Leafs after 4 year still have 2nd liners paying 1st line, 3rd liners playing on the 2nd, and 4th liners playing on the 3rd.

Bozak is great on faceoffs and would become a 3rd line center on most teams. In Toronto, he’s 1st line on the PP. He’s a younger Manny Maholtra. But I know this won’t make sense to most Leaf fans. You all think Bozak is 1st line material.

        Leafs have 2 legit top 6 forwards….after 4 seasons.
Oh I know what you’re going to say, some fool crazy idea the Gabo and Nik are top 6.
Those two are only top 6 on bad teams like the Leafs and are relegated to the 3rd line on good teams.

Again, Mr Mojo, you’re just completely blind and homeristic about the Leafs that you destroy any credibility.

Wanna know how I know I’m right and you’re wrong?
        The standings every year.

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Nov 15, 2012 at 1:32 PM

I wish I had the time to write a book like that about every team and fan base I don’t particularly care for.

I don’t think anything I said is that blind or “homeristic.” I didn’t say Gunner was the next Lidstrom, I said exactly what you said: he’s above average, the kind of solid player every team likes to have on their blue line. You also haven’t explained how it is that you people can talk about how overrated Phaneuf is and in the same breath say the Leafs have a snowball’s chance in hell of keeping him.

But please, don’t try to have a logical discussion, just continue dumping on a sports team that has no bearing whatsoever on anything important in your life or mine.

      • mrchainbluelightning - Nov 15, 2012 at 2:09 PM

I didn’t say you said he was Lidstrom, What I got a kick out of was that you’re defending Burke after 4 years the best you can come up with is Jake and Carl?

I never said Phaneuf was trash over over-rated, I said he is as good as gone.
But now you have gone from a homer to a putting words in mouth liar because you can’t handle the truth.

Cute how you finish your lies with an accusation that I’m not the one being logical.

Absolutely pathetic that when confronted with facts and reality you resort to garbage like this. Don’t bother replying to me any longer, I couldn’t are less what people like you have to say on any subject.

BTW your response is typical on the internet, twist facts & words, place lies in the mouth to make someone look less credible and then claim the other isn’t making sense.
You must have learned this from Burkie

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Nov 15, 2012 at 4:27 PM

You refuse to answer the Phaneuf question. You don’t want a discussion, you want to spew vitriol, so go ahead. Clearly you have a problem with underachieving teams with loyal fan bases. I’m sorry you were abused by a man in a Leafs shirt or a Cubs cap, but that’s not my problem. I’m just going to go ahead and keep supporting the Leafs.

Hey look another looser who has nothing better to do than trash the Leafs! I don’t understand your point? So what if they don’t sign? Lots of teams lose players to free agency. Dallas and Nashville come to mind. As a matter of fact it happens so often people have delveloped a catchy phrase for it: “Free Agency” or didn’t you get that far in school? Yes the Leafs suck we know this because we watch them every day, and yes it’s possible that when some of the contracts run out those players won’t resign. You’re not really making any points that someone who can read doesn’t already know, or maybe you just figured out how to read and you’re excited to show it off? Probably you’re just jelous because the Leafs can suck and they’re still the center of the hockey world and whatever stupid team you like can’t even crack the front page in your local paper. You should be happy for the Leafs. Without them there would be no NHL.

Blah Blah Blah keep spend $650 for front row?

Here’s a fact for you Leaf fans, if you stopped going and spending money a LONG time ago, things may have changed.

And by a long time ago, Im going back to Harold Ballard days when you all were still showing up.

      • mrchainbluelightning - Nov 15, 2012 at 4:06 PM

Oh wait I totally forgot to LOL @ the idea of a Wings fan being jealous of the Leafs.

      • mrchainbluelightning - Nov 15, 2012 at 4:16 PM

Oh you don’t get the point that if they leave it means that after 4 years the Brian Burke era will go down as one of the worst in franchise history for a GM.

Burke walked in gave you nothing and left you with nothing.

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Nov 15, 2012 at 4:28 PM

SInce we had nothing to begin with I’d say it will be hard to label his tenure as one of the worst.

      • tatdue - Nov 15, 2012 at 9:52 PM

@1943mrmojorisin1971 – Don’t sweat it guy mrchain there is a wings fan so it makes perfect sense for him to hate anything Leafs because as crappy as the Leafs have been his wings have still only managed to beat them “once” in the last “five” years! So needless to say the more he shoots his mouth off about how bad the Leafs are the more he realizes how crappy his own team is becoming…

I used to be a Leaf fan (big one) until Burke rode into town. I do not like Burke and he has made hudge mistakes on some signings. But I watched the WHL/Russia Subway Series game last night in Vancouver and I think the best Dman on the ice was Morgan Riely, Burke got lucky on that pick. Right now Riely is probably faster and better than Phaneuf.

If the NHL moved Phoenix to Toronto, the Maple Laughs would be the 3rd best team in Toronto behind the Yotes and Marlies.
