@chrisvegas,
I'm sorry, but I'll stick with Forbes rather than a blogger for accurate information until further evidence is presented. It is clear that one o0f the blogger's justification which was avg ticket price and attendance didnt match up for a couple of teams - but what he failed to account for is some of the Premium seating and one of the most significant sources of ticket revenue, the Luxury Suites. While i'm not saying that Forbes is infallible, I do think they are infinitely more reliable than just a blogger here.
As for teams like the Sharks losing money - you need to take into account other revenue sources, such as local TV revenue. The Sharks get a fraction of the TV revenue that many of the teams get. They also have a very large payroll.
I'm not here to say the Owners are right and the Players are wrong - but I disagree that you can point the finger more at one side or another. They both need to come to some compromise agreement. Further, neither side takes into account the Fans - who have been the ultimate losers not only this season but over the years as the ticket prices have skyrocketed so much that it is getting incredibly hard to afford to take a family out to a game.

This is the best news I've heard about the despicable NHL. I say let the NHL die an ignominious death, the NHL is the worst excuse for hockey ever devised by a demented mind. Nothing but a bunch of cowards with sticks trying to get in the best cheap shot. If you want to watch the best hockey watch women's Olympic hockey, they actually play real hockey and aren't all caught up in cowardly cheap shots against fellow players.

Well, I'm watching Thursday night Football game, tomorrow night going out. Saturday College football, Sunday NFL, and Monday night NFL. Tuesday and Wednesday will be become DVR catch up time for my favorite TV shows.

Do you see what's happening here? I'm losing my interest fast.

No games equals no salaries.

Go play in the KHL, enjoy flying on those wonderful old Russian airplanes. Learn to speak Russian. Enjoy the Russian winters until late April.

Oh that's right, you showed the NHL owners who's in control. Moronic if you ask me.

@joeb2 – Cmon they have record revenue. You don't actually buy that 18 teams are losing money? I could except that 8-10 are which are in bad markets. Take that Forbes article with a grain of salt for these reasons:

“The problem is that NHL teams are run as private businesses and private businesses don't release their financials for review. Forbes builds their data off what they can gather off publicly available data, but that data is extremely sensitive to Hollywood accounting. For instance, last year, the Colorado Avalanche reported $7M more in gate receipts than the Florida Panthers, despite the Panthers drawing 1,100 more fans per game and having a higher average ticket price.

The Truth: Sadly, only the league, and possibly the players know the truth. Did the Panthers lose money? Yeah, probably. Did the Capitals lose more money than the Panthers? Probably not. Did the Sharks lose more than both of them? Come on now. Part of the reason for the Panthers' gate receipts being so low is that their lease agreement leaves nothing to the team for luxury box sales. Of course, the Panthers lease their arena from a company owned by the same company that owns them, but Forbes doesn't count that."

@chrisvegas,
here is an article by Forbes that researched the NHL and estimbated that 18 team lost money in the 2010/11 season.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/kurtbadenhausen/2012/09/18/nhl-lockout-is-all-about-the-benjamins-and-who-doesnt-have-them/
So, the majority of the owners are actually making money by not playing under the current system. Cant blame the owners for not wanting to lose money.

I do no think that owners should own teams to make money, but I do believe they should not be losing money. Both sides are to blame and both sides need to compromise for a solution. The sad part is the fans are the biggest losers. My proposal is to give Owners 40%, Players 40%, and give back 20% of revenue to fans by lowering ticket prices for everyone!

Alright NHLPA, your move. How much longer will it take before you crawl back to the negotiation table? Take the hit. What are your options? You play hockey for a living, and though many of you are very marginal players you are paid in excess of 2m per year. Not bad. Right? It's NHL or what?

The NHL does NOT understand that hockey is an international sport, and not a sport like Canadian football which is pretty much only played in Canada. Regardless of what happens you have to market your league and make deals such that the best hockey players in the world come play in your country AND for your team. The NHL could become what soccer is in North America, in which the best players--the Crosbys, the Patrick Kanes, Claude Giroux, Jonathan Quicks, Johnathan Toewses, the Shea Webers and Ryan Suters, the Joe Thorntons, the Pierre Bergerons, the Mike Greens, Brooks Laichs, Ryan Murrays, etc.--have their eyes set on playing hockey in Sweden, Switzerland, or in the KHL, rather than having long careers in the USA/Canada and only come back to finish their careers.

The NHL needs to grow up to this fact that if the owners keep playing hardball, the direction of where talent wants to go will leave the NHL as a feeder league with the best players leaving as soon as they become good. And if it continues to play hardball, it needs to set itself up to be a feeder league--with clubs being allowed to develop their own players in academies/hockey schools, and refocus energy exclusively around developing players and developing a legacy based on player development alone. (This goes for the big teams like the Habs, Bruins, Leafs, Rangers, Flyers, Caps, Red Wings, etc.)

The Stanley Cup also does not have to be tied to the playoff champion of the NHL--and if the NHL continues to play this kind of hardball, the Cup trustees may decide that another league is more worthy of the Cup.

Long story short, the NHL--Bill Daly, Gary Bettman, and the owners that are playing hardball--need to wake up to the fact that ice hockey is an international sport. If the players that make the product the way it is decide to pick up and leave, and another league like the KHL becomes a destination league for North American players (American or Canadian). With players constantly leaving, you could see the league devolve into something like the Argentine Primera Division (in soccer), where teams refused (and still refuse) to pay their top players (and major European teams could offer a lot more money, in terms of salaries to players and transfer fees to clubs). Once players started leaving, ultra-passionate (and potentially violent) ultras became the focal point of going to the games and watching Argentine soccer. (It became about doing the things around the club and causing trouble instead of watching what was on the field.) Players are leaving Argentina now, not because of money, but because of escaping the violence that became associated with Argentine domestic soccer.

I fear this may be what becomes of the NHL if the clueless owners continue to be clueless.

@somekat – You cannot compare this to the NBA. There are way less players on a NBA team the on a hockey team. The average NBA player makes MUCH MUCH more than the average NHL player. The average NBA player makes $5.5 Million! The average NHL player’s salary is 2.4 Million. Also most NHL players don’t make $2.4 million; half of the team is 3rd and 4th line players who make under a Million a year. Your comparison is severely flawed.

Well your wrong on the NFL. They are not under 40%. In the NFL Players get between 47%-48.5% of all revenue, down about 4% from previous deal. Owners no longer take $1 billion off the top. Previously, players received 59.6% after $1 billion credit.

You are also wrong for baseball. Baseball varies year to year because it is not a set percentage of revenue. Players are paid what their contract states. But in 2011 MLB players took home 51% of all Revenues(http://mlb.mlb.com/news/print.jsp?ymd=20110114&content_id=16441712&c_id=mlb).

They've agreed on a 50/50 split, if the Owners weren't trying to take away or rollback every other contract right players had this would be solved already.
