I don't think the players are being greedy. I think the Billionaires who trippled their TV revenue are the greedy ones. The last seven years brought in RECORD REVENUE! They need to honor their contracts. We could have played this season out while they continued to negotiate if the owners weren't so intent on their greedy demands. The owners choose lockout. Let me repeat that for you simple minded folk. THE OWNERS CHOOSE LOCKOUT. This is the OWNERS FAULT! Players come and go while the owners stay pretty much the same. 3 lockouts in 20 years and what is your constant, different players but the same greedy owners. The lockouts will not stop in the NHL until the fans hold the owners accountable. If you want to blame the fans you will have a lockout every 7 years.

Never said the owners were going to go for a 10 year deal. What I said was the owners are willing to sacrifice 1 season to improve their cash position over the next 10. If they drive down the HRR even 1% lower than where it is now, they've gained a substantial amount of money over the next 10 years. Make no mistake, this is purely about business for the owners, and they will do whatever they have to do to ensure their business model works for "them".

Does anyone here really believe the NHL players don't make enough money or are treated poorly by their owners? I think for the health of the league and for all of the 700 or so players, they would be well served to make only 4.5 million a year instead of 5 million a year. If the players really believed that they got so screwed over in the last CBA why then did they choose to play the option year(last season) and why they were willing to play the regular season this year on the old CBA agreement while the two sides talk about a new CBA? Lets call a spade a spade here, they players are being greedy and it's hurting the league, enough is enough, it's a sad day when the average fan has to take out a second mortgage to take the family to a game.

+1 Players can rage about it all they like, but it's pretty clear that the owners know what their bottom line is in these negotiations, and they won't buckle just to save an additional 10-20 games. The owners also don't really care that they are losing the PR battle. Oh, and once they get an agreement they like, it will be for the length of time the owners want, not the players. Bottom line - if the players thought that bringing in the brothers Fehr was going to force the NHL to play ball, they guessed wrong.

In the meantime, the careers of dozens of 3rd/4th line forwards, 5th/6th/7th defencemen and backup goalies continue to tick away. History suggests that the end of a lockout usually prompts a youth movement in most clubs, especially if an amnesty on buyouts is part of the deal.

NHL vs. NASCAR: You're right in that they aren't comparable, but not for the reasons you assume. NASCAR is right behind the NFL in popularity, but then again people also support such icons as the Kardashians, Honey Boo Boo, strip mining, and the creation myth. There's really no accounting for ignorance and poor taste.

NASCAR: National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. We'll leave the redundancy of Car and Auto out of it. It's understood English isn't a hick's strong suit.

Stock? Not for a very long time, although the brain trust of an excuse running the show decided to keep the bloated weight of a stock car (3,400 lbs.), along with all of three pieces: Hood, roof, trunk lid. That's it, three whole pieces that a NASCAR racer has in common with an actual stock car.

Modern stock cars are all fuel-injected. NASCAR? Still using carburetors. Most modern vehicles are front or all-wheel drive. NASCAR still uses old-school rear-wheel drive. Even Toyota, which has no rear-wheel-drive cars in production, uses rear-wheel-drive on its "racecar."

Real life requires driving in all conditions. Most racing organizations will race in the rain. Even motorcycles race in the rain. NASCAR? When it starts to drizzle you can find those he-men hiding in the garage.

Actual racing: Good luck, since most races see many, many laps under caution. Simple physics: Heavy car, with harder compound tires to carry said heavy car, results in vehicles driving at the limit of tire adhesion. A small bump, some disturbed airflow and, voila, pinball bumper cars crashing regularly. Unfortunately that seems to be a major attraction of NASCAR, as opposed to real racing series. And if you don't get to see enough smash-ups during a "clean" race, just wait: At least one of the "drivers" will intentionally crash into an opponent (see recent Bowyer/Gordon stupidity), something you never see in any other race series. Innovators of the "green-white-finish" style of racing, because otherwise half the races would end under caution.

History: Born of illegal bootlegging. Once Prohibition was repealed the criminals found a way to continue their activities by running moonshine, which existed in order to circumvent federal alcohol taxation. Once law enforcement began to crack down, participants decided to go to tracks and wreck each other there.

NHL: National Hockey League. Fast-moving athletic contest played on ice skates by boys/men with sticks and a flattened ball. Relatively little illegal activity (at least on the ice) and, until lately, fairly well-managed and entertaining. Occasional fighting breaks out, but this is mostly discouraged and hardly ever starts with someone crashing their car into someone else and risking lives.

There you have it. One discipline is fast-paced, entertaining, edge-of-the-seat high-drama with superbly-conditioned athletes exhibiting skills rarely seen in the general population and the other is NASCAR.

The rest of the pro sports world is roaring with laughter while pointing at the NHL and yet another work stoppage. The laughingstock of pro sports.

Personally, i'm enjoying watching alot of the game's biggest stars playing overseas on larger ice surfaces. That's how the game should be played anyway.

Not taking sides, but the owners will get what they want from these negotiations. Whether it is fair or not, they pay the salaries so they are in control. The players will need their income sooner than the owners and the owner's know that. I feel confident that the owners knew well in advance of the lockout what points they were going to stick to, they knew the PA wouldn't give on those initially, and made strategic decisions regarding revenues to help offset the losses they would incur by losing a season. Virtually all NHL owners have other business interest that generate their primary income other than hockey. If they lose a season to gain over the next 10 seasons, so be it, they'll survive. If you're a 30 plus year old hockey player in your prime earning years, a lost season is a tremendous percentage of your career earnings.

All your future endeavors. Be nice to one another and remember we're all in this together. One more thing at the owners. It disgusts me to think that these owners are so effing greedy. It is one thing to want to be successful in business to make your business more profitable to be financially stable and to look at the long-term effects of your corporate structure. But FEU F the game and after people making the decisions that are locking out the players! I am a lifelong lover of the game and I swear the NHL just lost me what a shame I wish the rest of you would do it the damage is done the owners getting what they want. Have a nice life

Dear NHL and NHLPA,

While you guys bicker over who gets how much of 3.5 billion dollars, you seem to forget 0% of 3.5 billion is, well 0 dollars. Instead your 3.5 billion you can't divide up amongst yourselves, the fans are dividing up their "spendable income" on the NFL, NBA, NCAA basketball, NCAA football, MLS soccer, NCAA hockey, AHL hockey, NASCAR, Indy Car, badminton, volleyball, Major League Lacrosse, lingerie football league, MLB baseball in the spring, golf, figure skating, water polo, the game where you scrub the ice when the saucer thing glides on it, new hd flat screens to watch these said products, jerseys of these products (except lingerie football, dudes don't look good them, period.), and every other piece of merchandise that isn't NHL is going to them, not you.

Good day.

Once again the league attempts to strong arm the players union into accepting their deal on their terms. I just hope Fehr comes back with an offer, but even if they do there's no way Bettman and Daly accept it. I can't get over how much both sides are willing to sacrifice for relatively small gains. The egos running this "negotiation" are disgusting.

People are reading too much into this. All he is saying is that they are waiting for the players to make the next offer... which isn't much of a suprise since its very clear where the owners stand.

Thats not to say this kind of talk is a good thing, but its not the end of the world either.

Too stupid...I just can't help myself...

First of all, he wasn't making a comparison between hockey and Nascar. Read before you write.

Second, I absolutely do not believe that players and owners care one bit about what I think. Unfortunately, not caring about the fans is what has done some of the most irreparable damage during this lockout.
