I thought Daly said last week. He wasnt going to be making public statements about the negotiations.

Sounds like the owners that didnt try to circumvent the cap have Dalys ear, because the rest continue to try to find loopholes. That sounds like something the owners need to figure out amongst themselves.

27 is a pretty fair age to determine the future of a player. At 28 pretty much in prime of your career, with outlook for one big contract. If you get a second its probably because someone will be paying you alot for past performance and you wont sustain it for the life of the second one.

Looks to me owners got everything they wanted in last lockout, most of it has been great for them, a couple things not so great, so now they want that addressed as well. Basically they want everything tilted in their favor. If they really wanted a season they should have been working on these things much sooner than mid November. Its 50 or zero. Hoping 50 but looking bleaker everyday

It's exactly the set of rules the owners wanted (and got) from the last lockout. It's exactly the system they wanted. And it's the one they gloated about getting after they won the last lockout.

And yeah, the "talent evaluation" angle here is smoke n' mirrors. By the time a player reaches 27 (or 28) you've already known for some time what you have. This is a control issue.

This is exactly how I see it. Bettman wants measures in place so that owners and GMs no longer circumvent their own system. But his solution to this problem is to go after the union, instead of holding the teams accountable. Attacking the players is the way Bettman sees a solution to all the leagues issues.

It is an accurate way of looking at it.

Also, if Daly thinks the difference between 27 and 28 for restricted FA isn't a big deal ("it's only one year"), then it should be a big enough deal for the clubs to worry about either....and seriously, clubs can't figure out how good a player is by the time he's 27?

Okay. So let every player that signed a contract over the summer that was never gonna be honored out of there contract. So they can find a team that might pay them more then what these teams want. I be not a signal owner does this to save these system cause they all abused the system. And all want to get away with it. Either honor the contracts or fix the system moving forward. When you reach for both you get neither.

Thats an asinine way of looking at it.

You have to play the game with the rules you have, and teams will do everything they can to win. That doesn't mean they like the rules, or that the rules are healthy for the league.

What I'm reading is that the owners want rules that will prevent them from doing what they did in droves this past off-season. Is that an accurate assessment? They need rules to protect them from themselves? Holy cow....
