Crosby says 60-game season would be “pretty fair”

Sidney Crosby isn’t just coming to grips with the reality of a shortened NHL season — he also has a number in mind.

That’s what the Penguins captain told WXDX Pittsburgh radio on Friday, suggesting a 60-game schedule would work well:

On games needed to have a legitimate regular season:

Sidney Crosby: “I don’t really have a number. I just think as many as they can get. That’s what I would hope would be everyone’s goal. I don’t want to put a number on it — the closer we can get to a full one, the better for everybody.”

On how many games are enough for everyone to get a fair shake:

SC: “Right off the top of my head, I gotta think 60. … I’m sure less than that could be played but I think 60 would be pretty fair. There are teams that struggle and that gives you a chance to go through a tough point in the season and still have time to kinda gather yourself. So that’s a length that I’m sure everyone could live with, but I’m sure that we’d all be much happier playing much more than that.”

On the the 48-game schedule after a work stoppage in 1994:

SC: “There’s at least that. Maybe they could think about that, but I really don’t know. I think 60 is a fair amount but I don’t even want to talk about that because if they’ve canceled 12 for everyone then that still leaves us at 70.”

The 1994-95 lockout ended on Jan. 11 and the regular season started nine days later, on Jan. 20.

Games ran through May 3, the first time in NHL history the regular season extended into May, and teams only played intra-conference contests, meaning Eastern and Western conference teams didn’t face each other.

The 1994-95 postseason began on May 6 (comparatively speaking, last year’s playoffs began on Apr. 11) and ended on June 24, thanks in large part to New Jersey sweeping the Detroit in the Stanley Cup final.

    How about 82.

How about a 72 game season EVERY YEAR? Three games against teams in conference (ditch the divisiones)
Two games against teams in the other conference.

      Summer’s my mistress. . . .

    You’re a “good” guy Crosby …

As an ardent and values-driven LA Kings fan for 39 years, I have no problem stating the truth … Sidney Crosby is a “good” man and the NHL is very wise to have him as the face of the league ! As I’ve stated before, my only real knock on the guy are his FBI-styled interviews. He should try a lighten up and speak a little more from the heart as opposed to the brain. This was always my main beef with Tiger Woods. Despite his brilliance on the course, he always came across in interviews as being cold, calculating and generally insincere. In recent times however, he’s changed that completely, now being a much more “honest and genuine” person … and you gotta like that ! :)

Now I wonder what the Flyer trolls are going to say negative about this?

    • comeonnowguys - Nov 9, 2012 at 3:42 PM

And you’re egging them on why, exactly?

As a Flyers fan…. anything is better than 0. I agree with Sid on this one.

Got nothing against Crosby, but you’ve got to reach an agreement first! And I don’t see that happening anytime soon. What a shame that such a great sport is also easily the most mismanaged and most lacking in leadership from its figureheads. The NHL needs a Pete Rozelle-type commissioner.

It would not surprise me one bit that this number came up during a conversation between Sid and someone from the Pens ownership/management. Subtle way of telling the PA what the owners are willing to do,

Crosby shouldn’t even be saying this. He’s almost teasing the fans (unintentionally, I’m sure) into thinking there will be a season soon. I’d rather him be honest and say, “It doesn’t look good. We’re probably going to lose the season and we hope the fans can forgive us and come back when this settled”.

Leafs could have used a 60 game season last year!
