Don Cherry: ‘If I’m betting, I’d say no’ NHL season

Nov 1, 2012, 9:38 PM EDT

Don Cherry

There’s still time to save the 2012-13 campaign, but Don Cherry certainly isn’t holding his breath.

“If I’m betting, I’d say no [NHL season],” Cherry told CBC’s Matt Galloway.

That’s a depressing reversal from his August prediction of a two-month lockout.

At this point, we can’t count on getting a full 82-game schedule even if the lockout ended today and the Winter Classic is reportedly in danger.

There’s still time to save the season, but Cherry thinks that if it doesn’t happen by Jan. 1, then “we might have [the season] gone.”

Cherry also lashed out at critics who blame NHL commissioner Gary Bettman for the lockout.

“It’s absolutely ridiculous,” he said. “[The owners] had a vote at the start… 30 said yes [to the] lockout. It wasn’t Bettman. If they had said no lockout, there wouldn’t have been a lockout. He’s the guy everybody goes after, it’s ridiculous. If 20 owners walked up to him right now and said ‘we’re going back,’ they’d go back.”

If you’re looking for a somewhat more optimistic look on our chances of having a 2012-13 campaign, then you might be interested in what Jeremy Roenick has to say.

It looks like Cherry knows even less about the NHL than I thought?….It only takes 8 owners to keep this bs going…..

He’s bad at math. He meant say 23. ☺

So, we can assume there will be a season… given that Son Cherry is full of s***

I’m not interested in anything Jeremy Roenick has to say

*don not son. And I’d rather listen to Roenick than cherry

Both are clowns cherry and Roenick. Remember when jeremy said “to hell with fans”? Cherry is right about Bettman’s role. A deal will be done by thanksgiving, believe it.

I believe that we won’t see a deal done by Black Friday.

That’s the first bit of good news I’ve heard about the lockout in a long time. If Cherry’s betting “no,” a deal must be coming within the next week.

Friends, the bottom line with Cherry is that he communicates in “double” speak … he always has and he always will. When he says the “up” he actually means “down” … when he says “stop” he actually means “go” … it’s his way and most people know that. He presents himself as being some big “rough & tough” guy, yet in reality he’s probably one of the nicest and kindest people going. Anyway, if he’s says there won’t be a season, then you just know that we must be getting real close now, eh ? :)

The tailors that make Don Cherry his whacky suits will be hit hard if there is a full year lockout.
