I’d be curious to hear your reasoning for that.

In 1994/95, the lockout was ended January 11th and play resumed on January 20th for a 48 game season. Even if the WC didn’t sound like it was going to be cancelled this coming week, the date it’s scheduled (January 1st) is before the likely cut off date if 1994/95 is any indication.

For the NHL to cancel the season early because the owners lose a major cash cow wouldn’t do them any favours with the fans or the players. It’d be even worse if the owners decided to shut the season down as early as November. I don’t see how they can’t at least pretend to want to keep hopes of a reduced season until after Christmas.

If the Winter Classic gets cancelled, then the season is gone and the players just screwed themselves out of a LOT of money

As a Jacket fan, I want it to be cancelled for now. Get it again in 2-3 years when the teams better so we can have multiple players in it rather than the only one player we’d have this year.

Well, as has been the case with much of these negotiations, the NHL cares about the all star game because it generates extra revenue. From a fan perspective, perhaps is fun for the younger fans, but I’d think a fair number of the adult fans don’t care that much about that break in the schedule. I’d think most would rather have more games or a less condensed schedule if it meant dropping that event from the calendar.

It seems there is a rumour going round that both the Winter Classic and All Star games will be cancelled on Monday.

@Buccigross: NHL sources tell me the NHL will cancel Winter Classic and All Star Game. Announcement presently scheduled for Monday.

Who really cares about the all star game, anyway? It’s a farce, like every professional all star game. They should cancel it and have the rest of the 82 game schedule.
