Fehr is and has always been a merde-bird. But, the real rat-bastards in this mess are owners and the diminutive rodent-face, Bettman. I know he and his ilk will say that disgruntled people like will be back immediately following the end of their abuse of me. They’re wrong! I have invested over forty years into emotion, money and love into the NHL. Go to Hell! Die and rot! NEVER again, you bastards! NEVER! What is it, 110 days or so till Pitchers & Catchers report? Geez, 110 inches . . . that about twicew the height of the dwarfish Rattman. Had this dwarf grown up in my old neighborhood, he’d either grown a set of onions or have become Commissioner of the NHL!

A negation won’t happen. The players and owners will lockout another season. That are by far the most stubborn and stupidest people in sports. They are part of the best game in the world, and yet. they are at best only fourth in North America.

Dlk75150 – Even “if” Fehr had tried to start negotiations last season, which I doubt he would have done due to his own selfish reasons, it’s highly unlikely that Bettman would have given him the time of day anyway. This impasse is a “premeditated” charade that was intended to delay the start of the season, in-order to drive a hidden agenda which obviously includes the “elimination of October and November from the schedule” as one of it’s primary objectives.

Here’s a responsible concept for Both parties. Compromise, since both sides are adamant about winning the CBA. Let’s have the players take only a 6 percent pay cut instead of the original 24%, now 12%. Have it fazed in over the next three years, along with 50/50 split in revenue.

Otherwise gentlemen, you can KISS next year’s future revenue in half. All the major corporate sponsors and other revenues will be gone. Common sense should be on your thoughts. Place your pride and emotions on the back burner. It’s a killer in life. Ask Mark Messier, Jeremy Roenick to name a few.

Exactly. There is no way for the NHLPA to comment on the NHL’s “profits” because the NHL refuses to be clear about what their profits are, and even if they did the picture would be about as clear as mud.

We all realize there are teams that are losing money, but if you simply look at how the vast majority of NHL teams handled their business over the last CBA it’s a fair assumption that the record revenues translated in to record profits for many many franchises. That’s all Fehr and the NHLPA (and fans frankly, although we realize they’ve forgotten that we’re here) can go off of.

sales (revenue) @ $100 less $10 costs = $90 profit

2) International Corporation
sales (revenue) @ 3 billion less 3 billion costs = “0″ profit

Stakex – basic economics says that scenario “1″ is superior 10/10 times … any discussion about revenue (sales) is only valid in that it gives an indication of business activity … however it has nothing to do with the bottom line “financial” health of a company, for that’s when the discussion focuses on “profit” or a lack thereof …

I would submit to you friend that it’s logical for the NHL’s revenue (sales) to have increased significantly over the life of this last CBA, as that’s mostly just a reflection of an “across the board” overall increase in economic activity (eg: look at the increase in GDP over the same period). However that has nothing to do with the bottom line financial “health” of the league (eg: “profit” or a lack thereof) which I would contend is rather “sickly” at the moment and which I would contend is the major underlying reason for this current situation. So while some teams are no doubt making handsome profits, I would submit that for each one of those there are likely five teams which are not … and therein lies the dilemma for Bettman and company. I am personally convinced that over the long term, the only solution is to abandon the “sunbelt” vision and instead embrace the concept of “contraction” and/or “northward migration”.

Six of the eight contract negotiations he has been involved in have resulted in work stoppages, including five consecutive negotiations between the MLBPA and Major League Baseball. Granted only one of those has been the NHL but, you do see the trend, right?

What your argument has lost is perspective. Just because they have a record amount of revenue doesnt mean record profit. With the value of the American dollar and inflation, they need more money to do do the same things they were doing before. Everything costs more, from employee salary, to stadium upkeep, to ice cream and beer. So after you factor those things in, you can see why record revenue doesnt mean squat.

So, are you saying that the league lost money during the last CBA? If that’s the case, then perhaps those running the league need to be held accountable. Record revenue should lead to record profits unless spending is not done wisely (ie. expanding into markets that simply will not support hockey and handing out exhorbitant contrats and then crying poverty). Sound familiar?

Fehr sure is a clown alright … though a “transient” clown is probably a more accurate description. The thing is that whether you like him or not, Bettman will still be our NHL commissioner in 5 years time, whereas Fehr will likely be long gone the “minute” this issue is resolved.

I don’t get what this lockout has to do with market share for the big 4. The other 3 have experienced lockouts/strikes. NBA/MLB/NFL have been big nation wide U.S. sports for many many years. Not so for hockey, which is a Canadian sport going back to the original six teams, 2 of which were in Canada 4. The NHL’s first big attempt to market the league nation wide in the U.S. happened in the late 60s. So, selling hockey in new markets where the other sports have been ingrained there is not an easy task.
