Greatminnesotasportsmind- I get your points but what’s really going on in this situation, if you break it down is this: the owners believe that they can make the most ridiculous demands of the players (while playing it off as if they’re making huge sacrifices, compared to their initial offer, when they’re really losing nothing and gaining a ton) because they are using the 04-05 lockout as the template for negotiations. They know by holding out a full year the players will give in to all their demands again, while at the same time the teams that were in the red over the past years are saving a huge amount of money by not having to pay regular in-season costs. So it benefits them greatly to hold out for everything. The players, on the other hand, have already conceded that they will have to accept atleast 7% less in HRR. They simply want the contracts given to them by the owners, under the cba that was implemented by the owners, to be honored. The owners now are acting like they’re making a huge sacrifice with their “make whole” bs which would only have to honor the first two years of the contracts they gave out literally minutes before the cba expired. That’s not a concession! That’s another win for the owners! And Bettman thinks the players and the fans are blind to this fact, that we’re too dumb to realize what their last offer really meant. I don’t see what’s so fundamentally appalling to Bettman that the stars of the game, who make him $8 mil a year, want the money that was promised to them with a legally binding contract. I can guarantee that if the shoe was on the other foot, and the owners weren’t having their contracts fulfilled, they would take legal action to recoup every single penny owed to them. The bottom line is Bettman is willing to gamble the record revenues and never before seen fan support simply to improve the portfolios of the owners, and more importantly himself. If he was doing his job, and taking into account the welfare of the game, he would consider revenue sharing coinciding with a more even HRR split. This isn’t about revamping a dying dull sport like it was in ’04. No this is about a power trip where the financiers of the NHL have watched as the players received more than half of the $3.3 billion in revenue and they say “that should be us”. They want more than 50/50, they want the players percentage to be closer to their 43% and that is why they attempted to pull the wool over our eyes by redefining HRR then telling us it’s an even offer. And that is why there was a ticking clock on the offer, to assure that they get the biggest piece of the pie. I may not like Fehr, and I know the millionaire players don’t understand our working class struggles, but they atleast acknowledge the fans pay their salaries. The owners and Bettman couldnt care less what we think because we’re nothing more than a number in a system that makes them rich. They know most of us will back no matter how poorly they treat us. It’s for this to end, for hockey to start, and for Bettman to go back to the NBA as Sterns replacement. Sadly, it seems none of those things will happen any time soon.

Wow are you missing some key points! These are contracts that the owners agreed to. It’s not as if there is a lock out because the players are demanding more money on pre existing contracts. No, they are fighting to retain what the owners legally owe them. 50/50 is reasonable but to sit there and say we signed players too much money is ludicrous, it is not the players fault that some of these owners are terrible business men. I guess you’d be happy with a pay cut as long as you had food on you’re table and you know what if you’re not you can go to Afghanistan and then see how you feel about it.

And again EVERYONE forgets about the “little people” that make a living off hockey and other type arena events, the folks that work in vending, parking lots, just everything, those people that rely on this sport to help support their income from EVENTS happening. These are the ones I feel SORRY for they have nothing in this and are the REAL LOSERS in the strike!!, oops lockout, WHAT-EVER!!!. And PLEASE some TV corp. make a deal with AHL, KHL or ECHL or European league (sorrry don’t know there name) to COVER some HOCKEY for us, PLEASE???.

Just a bummer hockey was starting to build its fan base up. I live in original hockeytown USA. And we are fortunates to have a Division 1, 2 junior A teams in town, and across the river we have OHL, and a NOJHL teams to watch. So many dedicated NHL fans worldwide, and its hurting all of us, Not to mention all the Arena workers, bars restaurants, hotels etc. Gonna mske for a long winter, hoping this can be Settled!!!

Guys, we all need to chili and be patient here. Throwing the baby out with the bath water is not the solution. Someone is going to eventually give in. There is no way a lockout will benefit either sides. If we don’t have a solution by end of Nov. then we unleash our wrath. In the mean time let the big shots take care of their business. Oh! If anyone wanted to try a new start up league to complete with these a-holes, now would be the time. I don’t even know what to say to this. The leauge got everything they wanted last deal, made great money since then, and still want to play hardball. As for the “small market” teams that aren’t making money, I’m all for stability and giving them a fair chance to make it, but there comes a point where you need to go in another direction. Stop trying to save Phoenix, and you should move FLA as far as I’m concerned. Phx to Seattle; FLA to Quebec and you have two more strong markets and two less weak ones, +4.

The issues this time around are very different than they were last time. Last lockout the owners absulutely wanted the salay cap. The players, most owners, NHL and the game have done very well since the 04-05 lockout. The issue today is about numbers not about major chanhge as was the case in 04-05. Look, when a team signs one of the best fighters in the league who had 5 goals 12 assists last year, to a $10 millon contract over 4 years you know the players are doing extramely well. That my friend is crazy.

Okay great let them go over seas. Meanwhile half the league is losing less money by not playing hockey and are still collecting tv revenue money.

The older players don’t want to end their careers in a lockout like 240 players did last time. The younger players were all reassigned to the ahl the day before the lockout and getting paid a small portion of their salary. It’s the players that are in between that are going to be hurting the league

Ok that’s great and all, but while the players are in the KHL making less than they would in the NHL, half the teams are losing less money but simply not even opening the doors to the arenas. The owners are still making their money on the record breaking tv contracts the NHL signed. ESPN can have the KHL, but of only 2 million people are watching the Stanley Cup Finals between the 2 biggest markets (LA and New York/Jersey) on national network television in prime time, how many are going to watch the KHL on ESPN during the middle of the day? Good luck getting 500,000

I’m going to solve the problem right now: split the revenue 50/50 but only under the following condition: the league must ensure that revenues will increase 10% every year for the next five years. The NHL can start by getting better a tv contract. The dodgers and lakers alone made billions on their recent tv contracts. If the kings, who just won the cup btw, could get half what the other LA teams got, and split that revenue equally among the NHL, with all other major markets like boston, new york, chicago, toronto, philly, etc. following suit, massive revenue gained, problem solved.

And why is it do you think the players are asking for a 53%, 52%, 51%, 50%… because if they go straight to 50/50 they KNOW that they cannot get paid the contracts that were offered to them this summer and all of last year. If you think for a second the players are going to take an offer that does not pay them nearly or at least what they got paid last year, your as crazy as the owners who gave out those contracts. They are not going to get slapped with a 24% cut and salary cap last time and take another slap like that again this time. NO WAY! And who can blame them, who CARES if its about millionaires.. its the principal here. If you were offered a $80k contract and you signed it then came to work and were told, “Well, actually we made more money than EVER before last year and the year before that, oh and the year before that, BUT we’re not going to pay you $80k we’re going to pay you $65k…” you’d tell them to get bent!! WTF is the difference! None. And what are the owner going to do?? Get replacements?? Good luck with that. While your playing replacements making $100k a year and all the greats are overseas in the KHL, bye bye NHL! ESPN would snap up a TV contract with the KHL so fast it would make the owners think that having a failing team in Phoenix woulda been worth it all the while!

Your CRAZY if you think the NHL’s next proposal is going to be any different. It’s quite simple, the owners want 50/50 split, to not have to honor agreed upon contracts, extend the life of free agency, lower the life of entry level contracts, limit arbitration rights, lower length of contracts (which I happen to agree with)… and it’s really pretty simple. They PA would pretty much agree to most everything as long as they get paid THEY’RE CONTRACTS! PERIOD! Until the owners/league realizes these guys are serious about they’re contracts, cuz the players will sit the whole year and then some i’d bet, then this thing is going to go on and on and on. And what are the owners going to do??? Huh? Are they going to suit up? They going to get replacements? Yeah, go ahead and do that. And when all the best are in the KHL, watch ESPN pick up the KHL full time and market these games. Bye, bye NHL!! Hey, Bettman don’t let the door hit you in ass on the way out!

Obviously, as of right now, the fans want a season. However, the longer this goes, they will get pi$$ed and hope they just cancel the second half, too. Half of them will never cone back. The players offer doesn’t reach 50/50 until at least year 3 in any proposal, one of them didn’t have a 50/50 split at all. Sure, the NHL has the biggest TV in its sports history, but it is still pennies on the dollar compared to the NFL and NBA who makes a larger revenue pot than the NHL. They are at 50/50 with their new CBAs they worked out in the past year. No reason why the players can’t right away either. Until the players realize where they are in the realm of sports, way behind the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NASCAR. Barely beating out the likes of the WNBA, MLS, Scrabble, and pool we won’t have hockey
