PHT Morning Skate: Brett Hull just can’t leave Buffalo alone

Oct 24, 2012, 8:30 AM EDT

Brett Hull pumpkin

PHT’s Morning Skate takes a look around the world of hockey to see what’s happening and what we’ll be talking about around the NHL world and beyond.

If Brett Hull wasn’t already “persona non grata” in Buffalo he is now. He tweeted out the photo you see with the message, “Happy Halloween to all my friends in Buffalo!” That’s ice cold and a fantastic way to troll an entire fan base. (@2ndBestHull)

Eric Macramalla says the hubbub about the players’ union not knowing the NHL was going to contact the players is incorrect. (Offside Sports Blog)

Former Sabres forward Adam Mair will be coaching at Canisius College. (WKBW-Buffalo)

You’ll be happy/curious to know none of the Ottawa Senators took advantage of the owners’ 48-hour window to chat. (Ottawa Sun)

Rob Rossi seems to think there’s positive things to take out of the grim-looking labor war. (Tribune-Review)

Turns out Flyers forward Tom Sestito is just as rough in England as he is in North America as he sent a player to the hospital. (Broad Street Hockey)

James van Riemsdyk is thinking about playing in Finland. (Toronto Sun)

Since we started with Brett Hull, it’s only fitting that we end with Dominik Hasek as today marks Day 39 of the lockout.

Whats that brett? The worlds almost forgot about you? Better do something childish so you have another 2 days in the eyes of hockey fans. What a chump.

Oh come on big black, either you have a huge hard on for Hasek or your a Sabers fan. Thats funny. You know it. I know it. And if it was any of your hockey idols you would get a little snicker out of it too. Now that said, I’m also a huge Hull fan and was pumped when he won that first cup….

What the hell is it supposed to be? (Other than a pumpkin of course)

    • supercoop8 - Oct 24, 2012 at 11:34 AM

The bottom figure is Brett Hull, the top figure is Hasek; it was a very disputed game winning overtime goal in the cup finals. As bigblack can show you above the city of Buffalo is still butt hurt, calling the third all time goal scorer a “chump” is a sign of a tantrum.

I see it now! That certainly won’t win any artwork awards. And yes, I remember that game well.

I am a Sabres fan and I agree that it was a bad call…BUT, even if it was called back, we still had to win that game and game 7 in Dallas(nobody ever mentions this) So for some to say we were robbed, maybe. But it wasn’t stolen by any means. Oh and I think think the pumpkin is pretty funny

    • zetaone - Oct 24, 2012 at 1:45 PM

I have to agree. I’m a Sabres fan and I thought it was kind of funny. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it was tasteless or anything. It’s been over 10 years so it doesn’t sting so much anymore. It would be a totally different thing if he had done this Halloween 2000 or a few years after. Then I would probably be upset.

must absolutely suck to have your crowing achievement as a player be a play that shouldnt have counted. Brett Hull, how do you live with that on your brain?

    • bagjr387 - Oct 24, 2012 at 4:20 PM

Yea, except for the other 1390 points he scored? or the other 740 goals?

      8 all star games
      Lester B pearson award
      Lady Byng

yea, there is no crowning achievements that I can think of

Funny this is brought up now. This is another one of Bettman’s glorious moments in the NHL when he covered his butt by saying that a mysterious memo went out mid-year making the goal legal.
MAnother reminder of how bettman is wrecking hockey….
