Nhl does have a say in in where a team is located because they also make revenue. Just lik if you bought a McDonalds even though you own it they decide where it goes.

Try driving from the part of Long Island that is outside the city limits (Nassau and Suffolk counties) to somewhere that is not on Long Island without going through Queens County and/or Kings County, both of which are geographically part of “Lon Gisland”.

What IS Gary Bettman thinking with moving the Islanders? Don’t you have more pressing matters like getting the NHL up and running instead of worrying about moving a team in 3 years from now? Now that you have just created more job loses on Long Island (by the thousands) losing all the Long Island fans and season ticket holders including corporate ticket holders. Demographically who in Brooklyn watches hockey let alone Islander games. Most city residents are DIE HARD Rangers fans. Gary Bettman needs to step down and lets get someone who can do the job right. Gary has been too quick to give up on cancelling seasons. Jeremy Roenick who be a great commisioner or the Great One Wayne Gretzky. Oh and by the way didn’t Mr. Bettman recently disrespect the Gretzky (The face of Hockey) with something in the regards of the All-Star Game. When is enough is enough, This may be the first team to fold in the NHL in the future. I’m sooo disappointed in the NHL with this decision. Good Luck NY Islanders and I speak for Islanders fans we will miss you !!!!

Let’s not be overdramatic here. If Long Island residents who love the Rangers can take a train to MSG, Islanders fans can take a train to Brooklyn. Islanders fans have two years to become familiar with the train lines, and if they manage to stumble into a winner in the meantime, I imagine they will.

Barclays’ is an eyesore on the outside and apparently will now be on the inside as well. The least they could do is change the team name to something catchy. Gowanus Toxins might work. At least Brooklyn will now get the Rangers, Pens, Flyers & Devils 4 times each per season.

As a hockey fan and a Ranger fan who wears skinny jeans, I agree. I suspect they’ll be an easier ticket than the Rangers which is good if you just love the sport in general and wanna see it live even if the enemy is hosting:).

I feel awful for the fans on Long Island who basically are losing their team. They’ll only be able to go see their team on the weekends at best.

Wonder if they’ll remove every possible Long Island identity reference like they did with the Nets.

Glad they aren’t moving out of the vicinity but hate it for fans that have suffered a lot of lean years.

The only issue is they can only renovate during the summer. And that will cancel out some summer events. And we’re not talking about minor tweaks. They need to find a way to basically stretch the floor plan quite a bit.

Driving to the arena really isn’t an option at all. If fans are coming from LI, they should count on taking public transportation, at least from Jamaica.

Well, this is good for me since it’s a lot easier for me to get to the Brooklyn site than the Nassau site. But it will alienate the team’s LI-based fans, and probably not do a thing to cut into the large Rangers fan base that dominates the city.

At least LI fans can get to the new place using LIRR to Brooklyn. Because they aren’t going to want to drive, I am sure.

In the end, though, a new arena isn’t going to fix a team that has been the biggest laughingstock in the New York area for a very long time now. I don’t know what will, short of new ownership and a creative buyout of diPietro’s albatross contract.

14,500 isn’t so bad for a team that averaged just under 13,191 per game last year, The Jets in Winnipeg averaged 15,004 last season and that’s a constant stream of sellouts. The “Islanders” can make this work in the short term.

in addition, fans who wanted to drive from LI for 7pm games would have to leave their houses around 4pm. parking is slim to none around atlantic, and the lots will be 8x the amount of nassau col…Driving sounds painful, sitting on the LIE to the BQE which is always a zoo and a parking lot from 4-7pm everynight with the work commute.
