elvispocomo what are you talking about, did you read the article? He returned after Matt hit him and was hit again 10 months later. 10 months!! That almost a whole year later man. Yes I am a Pens fan and no I definitely don’t condone any of the dirty things cook did in his career but he made a change for the better and he was not the deciding factor in ending this man career. He played a part but its hockey, these guys take nasty hits and after a few to many it takes a toll. Don’t throw this all on Matt when there are other factors after the fact that contribute. I wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see sav play again, he one of the toughest dudes in the league.

It helps the cash strapped Bruins too if he doesn’t officially retire because they get his LTIR exception. Same reason why Pronger won’t retire.

And he is getting paid during the lockout since he is on the IR. If there is even a .0001% chance he can play it makes zero sense for him to officially retire. The team gave him that contract and he has every right to collect it.

Cooke is not a goon, but definitely an agitator…just like Ott, Kaleta, Marchand, Burrows, Lapierre, etc. Everyone loves when they have a player like that, but hates them on another team.

As for Savard, I hope he can return to the Bruins someday, he always made stuff happen on the ice and made many memorable highlight reel type plays. On the other hand, i don’t want him to end up brain damaged and his life is more important than hockey. If he has to hang them up it will be just like Lindros, Lafontaine, and the countless others that had to end their careers from a bad injury.

a player going 30 + mph into the board elbow up at savards head is a “normal bump”? Cmon man i know we all havent seen hockey in awhile but really? Im not defending matt cooke and he certainly started savards problem with his cheap shot but he didnt end his career TECHNICALLY because hunwicks hit on savard was the last one which has him where he is today. Or are you that dim not recgonize the order of events in which they happend?

Karma I guess. But on the bright side, there will be less biting in the league when Savard retires.

Are your really that dim? Hunwicks hit was a normal bump. If his brain wasn’t a mess because of Cooke it wouldn’t have had any effect.

I guess Bertuzi should laywer up with you; technically it was the ice that broke his neck. you clown.

If your care tire pops off going over a speed bump – the damage was probably done sometime before that.

Savard is hardly the only victim of this cheap shot artist Cooke … and the only reason the little weasel has cleaned up his “filthy” act of late, is because he was ordered to by Penguin’s management … his vile behavior is completely at odds with the positive image they’re trying to promote with Crosby … with any luck and God willing, may the “Hammer of Justice” soon come down squarely on the head of the creature Cooke !

This is odd. Sometime last year Savard said that he knew in his mind that he was de facto retired, and that it hadn’t sunk in with his kids yet—he just didn’t announce it formally. On the other hand, it’s often quite difficult to take the sport out of the player. I understand that he would want to come back. But he really shouldn’t. His brain has been jostled about way too much already, and he has the rest of his life and his family to consider.

I would say he’s a good specialty player. i.e. PK. And adds physicality to a game, and knows when to drop them and when to hold’em. He certainly learned to stay out of the penalty box. To me, a good player is one who can consistently stay on the second line. If you can do that, then you qualify to be a good player. My 2 cents.

You did read the part where he returned to the lineup after the cooke hit to only be knocked out again my matt hunwick right? Technically it was hunwicks hit that ended savards career.

Oh yeah but it’s the Owners “taking all the risk”. LOL.

This article is deceptive. Savard had concussion issues before Matt Cooke. He was then cleared to play after the Cooke hit and suffered yet another. Savard’s issues cannot be laid entirely at Cooke’s feet. And have a look at Cooke’s stats, he’s far from a “goon”. They guy is a good hockey player.

I think any hockey fan would trade Savard for Matt Cooke every day of every year. What a shame that a goon most likely ended what was a great career for an amazingly skilled player. If Savard cannot play again, here’s hoping that his everyday life moving forward is unaffected.
