Crosby doesn’t recall injuring Giroux’s wrists…but if he did, he’s not sorry about it

This is why we need the hockey season to begin.

In a lengthy, wide-ranging interview with Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Sidney Crosby addressed claims he injured both of Claude Giroux‘s wrists during last year’s playoffs…by dismissing those claims without apology:

Rorabaugh: During the offseason, Giroux claimed you broke his wrists while taking faceoffs. Do you recall any plays where that might have happened?

Crosby: ”No. I really like to win the faceoff. I don’t try to go after his wrists but if I caught it, I’m not sorry for it. I think it’s hilarious I hear that stuff from Philly.

“It’s comedy to me to be honest with you. They’re probably involved in that stuff more than any team in the league and they’re the ones always talking about it.

“I guess I’m not apologetic. I was trying to win a faceoff and if I caught his wrist, then I caught his wrist. He seemed to play okay so I couldn’t have hurt him that bad.”

Giroux underwent offseason surgery on his wrists — one of which was fractured — and later told the Timmins Press the injuries came courtesy Sid the Kid:

“Those are from Crosby,” he says half smiling, but with some tension in his voice. “Every time we’d line up against each other for a face-off during our series, instead of going for the puck when it was dropped, he’d hack me across the wrists.

“I ended up playing the series against Jersey with one of them fractured and had to go for surgery on both of them after we were out of the playoffs.”

Seriously, the Giroux vs. Crosby rivalry is reason alone to get the season underway.

Agreed. That became a pretty epic battle. I want to see some of that soon…and more Vancouver/Boston match-ups. Those two teams were, and hopefully are, still at each other’s throats when it comes down to it. NHL might as well get it while the gettin is good and schedule two, instead of one match-up, between them per year.

    • lordfletcher - Oct 17, 2012 at 4:48 PM

I wish the word ‘Epic’ would go the F away!!!

      • blomfeld - Oct 18, 2012 at 1:25 AM

well I wish the word “awesome” would go away …

  2. chrisk61 - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:04 PM

the pens are the flyers’ b****es. jordan staal looked at the dysfunction on that team, the misallocation of resources to the so-called big three (syndi, malkin and fleury) and the changing competitive landscape (pens vs flyers and rangers); and left town.

the pens have peaked, they are in decline and syndi is one hit away from being washed up.

but pens fans…look at the bright side…at least you didn’t get eliminated last yr via a gm 7 on home ice…HA HA HA

    • flyers23 - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:06 PM

As much as I hate the Pens, we can’t brag too much, we got swept the next round.

      • flyers23 - Oct 17, 2012 at 4:43 PM

4-1* nonetheless still lost in 5

    • eyeh8goodell - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:30 PM

And who, eliminated the Flyers the previous 2 seasons (one of which was en route to a Cup victory)? Yep, the Pens. And you should probably check your facts, as Crosby’s last injury was a misdiagnosed neck injury, NOT a concussion. His career will be just fine, which sucks for you.

Funny you mention the Rangers, you should probably check their record against the Pens last season.

Typical idiot Flyers fan. The Pens have racked up 3 Cups since you won your last. And nobody even remembers that the Flyers even won Cups in the 70’s……all they remember is the cartoonish Broad Street Bullies goonism that got them there.

      • mclovinhockey - Oct 17, 2012 at 6:32 PM

ummmmmmmm NJ and Boston beat philly last 2 Seasons, Boston won the cup… pens got eliminated in round 1 that year, just like last.
Watch more than one season, remember the facts, then come back and talk cause you just made the pens fans look like COMPLETE IDIOTS!

      • ml3939 - Oct 17, 2012 at 7:19 PM

Historically beyond their 4 Cup appearances, the Penguins franchise has been pretty pathetic. They were not even relevant prior to 1990. They were such a bad team that intentionally lost games so they could draft Lemeiux first overall and they were so bad in the early 2000′s they got the first overall pick to draft Fleury, the second overall pick to get Malkin and they were the worst team before the lockout, won the draft lottery and drafted Crosby first overall. They followed those picks up with a second overall pick to draft Staal. The franchise has more losses than wins in it’s history. They have missed the playoffs more than twice as many times as the Flyers. I believe they also lead the league in bankruptcies thanks to a bandwagon fan base.

      • wicky888 - Oct 18, 2012 at 6:06 PM

Your comments are ridiculous, and we are all dumber for having read them.

This article makes me want to punch a Penguins fan in the FACE! Man I miss hockey, get the deal done already

I read on Grantland today that we should start referring to Bettman by his full name, Gary Bruce Bettman, in true serial killer fashion, since he’s been killing hockey games since 1995

    • chill1184 - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:43 PM

How well did the Flyers do again after beating the Pens last season? Oh wait I remember the Devils (the supposed “over the hill” Devils) kicked your ass the next round 4 to 1. I have no love loss for the NHL golden boy Crosby but Flyers fans are in no place to talk trash.

  3. flyers23 - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:05 PM

Huge Flyers fan, love this rivalry so much. This is why I miss hockey, please get this deal done so we can get back to the fun stuff

    • miketoasty - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:56 PM

Kind of refreshing to see Crosby open up, much better than his usual by the books response.

      • flyers23 - Oct 17, 2012 at 4:32 PM

Yea as much as I hate the guy, this is why sports are so fun. Can’t wait for Flyers vs. Pens

      • miketoasty - Oct 19, 2012 at 11:32 AM

Can’t wait either, hopefully sooner than later we can see these two going at each other again and maybe get a couple more 8 – 6 games, lol.

    • crosberries - Oct 17, 2012 at 5:47 PM

Can’t have heroes if there are no villains that’s what makes this rivalry so special to us

      • mclovinhockey - Oct 17, 2012 at 6:34 PM

although which is which depends on what color comes out when you bleed. : )

  4. hockeyfootball98 - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:06 PM

Really Cindy, watch the film Pitt lost their cool and played like abunch of goons. Crosby whines more than anyone in the league and is probably the dirtiest and most cowardly along with his girlfriend Malkin. God I hate the Penguins!!

    • eyeh8goodell - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:32 PM

Oh you mean the way the Flyers played in the 2nd round (where they got schooled about 10 ways to Sunday)?

Congrats, for the first time ever you guys got the Pens to lose their cool. I can promise it won’t happen again. And that “coward cindy” has more fights under his belt than your boy Giroux. Crosby fights his own battles, unlike your boy who has to go and hide behind Mommy’s skirt when it comes time to pay the price.

      • spiciercheez - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:43 PM

HAHA that is classic. Crosby loves fighting his own battles, especially when the refs/his teammates start stepping in. Giroux may go hide behind his mom’s skirt, but Crosby wears his mom’s.

      • phillyphanatic77 - Oct 17, 2012 at 7:49 PM

There’s no way in hell you can legitimately tell us that Crosby fights his own battles. He was personally responsible for almost all of the scuffles in last years series, acting like Matthew Barnaby then skating away to leave the dirty work for Cooke and Engelland. He’s the biggest instigator in the league, hands down (with the exception of players like zac rinaldo). But he’s allowed to get away with all kinds of disrespectful moves because the NHL needs him. How bout the classless move of pushing Voraceks glove away when he’s trying to simply pick it up, and that led to a huge brawl where he let his team clean up his mess. Some captain. No one can deny his talent and he’s a Philly killer but I don’t respect that weasel for anything besides his ability to put the puck in the net. Pens fans whine ALL the time about the Flyers being disrespectful goons, maybe it’s time to take a look at your own organization. Or maybe you can just have Lemieux write another letter crying about the integrity of the game while your players take every cheap head shot they can.

  5. lsxphotog - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:11 PM

There’s nothing better than two superstars that publicly hate each other. Can’t wait to see more.

  6. m1lla7 - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:13 PM

Crosby couldn’t stand a loss against the wings and crossed check him 5 times in the back. Sore loser.

  7. phipfwe76 - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:22 PM

I really want my Flyers back on the ice. 😦

As much as I hate Crosby, he just lit my hockey fire… again. Lets get this season played!!

  8. broadstbully33 - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:28 PM

crosby is being upstaged by giroux so the only win she can get is by cheating ,crying, dirty play, diving, whining,

    • eyeh8goodell - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:34 PM

Oh that’s rich coming from a Broad Street Bullies fan, the dirtiest and most detestable team in hockey history. You guys are kind of like Penn State fans….you’ve permanently lost the right to talk trash. Your Broad Street Bullies teams are your Jerry Sandusky’s.

      • flyersgoalscoredby88 - Oct 18, 2012 at 1:53 PM

You do realize that you basically just eliminated the majority of the people who root for both teams, right? Actually, far more Pittsburgh fans are PSU fans than Philly fans. At least on campus it’s like 4-1 Pens fans to Flyers fans…

Though when I went there it was about 10,000 – 0 Flyers fans to Pens fans, as there were no Pens fans in 2005.

  9. cosmoandmelovepens - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:31 PM

Looks like I will defend the penguins.

  10. sjsharks66 - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:32 PM

But if we have a lockout all 29 other teams and fans do not have to deal with the flyers…very tempting.
Can’t stand that team. Excited for the first pens-flyers game. Letang vs hartnell Crosby vs Girouxe

  11. cosmoandmelovepens - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:34 PM

    Byz sucks 1975

As a Pens fan are you commemorating the first time the Penguins filed for bankruptcy or one of those rare times a team blows a 3-0 in a playoff series? 1975 was one of the many high points in Pens history.

  14. kingfooj - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:40 PM

interesting article nonetheless but nbc should get an instigator for that title

  15. chrisvegas - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:44 PM

“They’re probably involved in that stuff more than any team in the league and they’re the ones always talking about it.”

This Flyers team isn’t cheap, but the Flyers will always have that label because of the Broadstreet Bullies era. This Flyers team is highly skilled. Yea they will fight and are gritty, but the only one you can say was a dirty player is Pronger and he is basically retired now.

  16. sjsharks66 - Oct 17, 2012 at 3:59 PM

What about rinaldo, hartnell, Girouxe, brier ?? Girouxe suspended for headshot in playoffs, rinaldo suspended multiple times, brier with his infamous cross check to the head and hartnell is not a dirty player. He’s just a punk and really annoying. Cries about his hair constantly being pulled.

    • kellyb9 - Oct 17, 2012 at 4:34 PM

Every team has “dirty” players… I’m so sick of fans complaining about what team is “dirtier”. Let the refs sort it out… and lets get back to watching hockey!!

    • chrisvegas - Oct 17, 2012 at 4:51 PM

Oh give me a break… Giroux and Briere are dirty players now? That is laughable. How can anyone take you serious after a comment like that. I get it you hate the Flyers and that is fine, but don’t let your hatred cloud your judgment. Hartnell is dirty? Hartnell is gritty, gets under people’s skin, and fights alot, but that doesn’t make him a dirty player. Chris Pronger is a dirty player and I don’t think Philly fans would even argue that, but none of the other ones you mentioned is even close to a dirty player. I don’t even think you know what a dirty player is. lol

  17. sjsharks66 - Oct 17, 2012 at 4:00 PM

Wait scratch that, I just remember hartnell bit Letang. Just like burrows did. So yeah what about those players?

  18. nothanksimdriving123 - Oct 17, 2012 at 4:01 PM

Interesting how many people who comment on the Pens/Flyers rivalry seem to have ongoing gender identification issues that they transfer onto disliked NHL players. Counseling is clearly recommended.

While we do appreciate the history class, the fact is that we live in the present … or in other words the “here and now” where our GLORIOUS Los Angeles Kings are the reigning Stanley Cup Champions and the absolute “best” team in the world, bar none !!!! :) :) :)

    • liamj55 - Oct 17, 2012 at 4:35 PM

      Quick Math Lesson:
      Stanley Cups won:

      Flyers – 2
      Penguins – 3
      Rangers – 4
      LA Kings – 1

        GO KINGS GO !!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)

  20. kicksave1980 - Oct 17, 2012 at 4:36 PM

I’m not a fan of Pittsburgh or Philadelphia, but for all of the talk about Crosby being a punk, Giroux is just as bad. I find it funny that the Flyers spend so much time complaining about other teams/players, as if that in and of itself isn’t ‘whining’.

I’m going to get mass thumbs downs for this from the ever-reactionary Flyers fans, but it’s true. That organization has had a chip on it’s shoulder against everyone else for 20 years.

    • flyers23 - Oct 17, 2012 at 4:38 PM

Lol because we have a rivalry with the Pens? You’re not supposed to like the teams in your division. Name me 2 players outside the division Flyers fans constantly complain about?

    • chrisvegas - Oct 17, 2012 at 4:54 PM

Constantly complain? I don’t think they complain anymore then any other team. Both teams take shots at eachother and I don’t have a problem with that.

      • flyers23 - Oct 17, 2012 at 4:59 PM

Yea, its all part of the division rivalries, all I’m saying is that Flyers fans don’t whine about every other team in the league, it’s just our division rivals we talk smack about which is all part of being a fan of a team.

    • mclovinhockey - Oct 17, 2012 at 6:38 PM

your not a hockey fan are you?

  21. id4joey - Oct 17, 2012 at 5:44 PM

Hahaha! Claudine Giroux whining… That is too funny…

  22. mclovinhockey - Oct 17, 2012 at 6:44 PM

Before people say anything about Crosby since 99.9% of the hockey world is biased one way or another, watch this video, everyone is right. He is a GREAT (not the best) forward who puts up amazing numbers and makes sick plays while also having the Diva in him come out a little too often where he cries, cheap shots and dives.
He is no Dats but not many people are, Giroux can be the same way although when he gets upset he usually just makes a dirty hit that gets called.
Anyway if you watch the video you get to see Crosby fight, and he is not bad at it

  23. isithockeyseasonyet - Oct 17, 2012 at 7:11 PM

Then why didn’t he do that in the playoffs? And 5 minutes off the ice is not a reasonable explanation, especially for what went on in that series

  24. dannythebisforbeast - Oct 17, 2012 at 7:32 PM

anyone who says Crosby isnt the league leader in whining clearly doesn’t pay attention. How many other top players get consistently called out but other members of their profession for crybaby antics Everything else is up for debate but that is 100% fact.

oh an flyers pens isn’t the same when Crosby and his loose noggin arent in it

  25. kgun80 - Oct 17, 2012 at 7:55 PM

I hate Crosby.. But he’s right.

  26. ducksk - Oct 17, 2012 at 8:02 PM

Flyers suck! Filthydelphia is as dirty and ugly as ur city in every sport. No class, beer guzzling buffoons, take your steak sandwhich and stuff it in your big fat pie holes. Flyers, phillies, eagles, 6’ers….u never win anything in any sport and are a joke to sport fans in the USA. Truth. Go Sid go! Philly class acts? Vick? Iverson? The broad street bullies? Too bad for u too have to live there and that your teams always suck.

Eye8godell. U are a joke pens fans permanently lost their rights as fans when you abandoned your team into bankruptcy. Turn the page the broad street bullies lasted two or three years. Flyers have been an organization for 45 or 50 years. The whole league was a beer league back in the 70s. Flyers were the pioneers of fighting but surely weren’t the only team. The whole league kn

    • eyeh8goodell - Oct 18, 2012 at 10:04 AM

That’s rich. You DO realize your boys led the league in every single penalty category (including majors) but one last year right? Try again.

  35. antmel30 - Oct 17, 2012 at 11:25 PM

The whole league knows the pens are dirty cry babies. You don’t get a rep league wide from one team bud. If you think Crosby finishing his battles is hiding behind refs then your right. I am beginning to think you don’t watch the pens after a comment like that. The flyers are a completely different organization than the 70s. The city loves and embraces physical play as does most the league. The flyers got talent to as you should know. I guess you would see it if you actually watched the pens when they don’t win cups
