Russians must do military duty, which can actually be completed by playing for a professional hockey team. Semin was required to complete his KHL contract in order to complete his military duty.

I wouldn’t risk injury playing for free. He gave the hometown fans a few weeks for free. What a selfish Russian jerk!

That’s not quite accurate.

Semin had a contract in Russia that he left to go play in the NHL. When he got back during the lockout, they told him he’d never be able to play in Russia or in the Olympics ever again if he didn’t fulfill his last year.

It wouldn’t be the first time with him. The year after the lockout ended Semin stayed in Russia even though he had a great rookie season with the Caps the year before the lockout. It took until Ovechkin’s second season to convince Semin to come back.

I must say, with all of the threats of staying in Russia (whether there’s any substance to it or not), Semin, especially with this move, would be the least surprising to stay in my view. I know he just signed his deal with Carolina, but if you can get someone over there to bite on a good paying contract for him when he hasn’t really found his game for years…wouldn’t surprise me if he takes his trade elsewhere.

Hell players like he and Ovi probably excel in their playing style over there…
