I think Yashins 10-year $87 million deal really set the table, but Dipietros deal made it more acceptable.

That’s a legitimate point, you’d know more about the Islanders front office than I do. I just think those deals over 7 or 8 years are ridiculous because you never know what’s going to happen and the contracts are guaranteed. The only player I’d be ok with the flyers giving a 10+ year deal to would be Giroux and if Shea Weber had ended up in Philly I’d be ok with it. Still extremely risky even with a marquee athlete.

I agree that this is probably the worst deal in the history of the NHL but in fairness, the deal seemed to be perpetrated by owner Charles Wang more so than Garth Snow. When asked about the contract, Wang has always claimed that “that is how he does business” and at the time, DP fit the bill for a marquee player that he could build the team and his marketing around.
Contract is ludicrous, but the the blame should be assigned to more heavily to Wang.

Notwithstanding Bettman’s failed “Sunbelt” experiment, another mitigating cause for the “sickly” financial state of the NHL today has to be these idiotic “til death do us part” contracts … and DiPietro or “patient zero” if you will, was the one who started all of the insanity by signing for a ridiculous 15 years … a number which is still comical six years later !. Nonetheless, by doing so, he boldly “blazed a trail” so that future atom-splitters such as Ovechkin, Luongo and Parise could follow in his foot steps !

ps: Quick’s contract is wrong too, as the maximum length for an NHL contract should be 5 x years …

That deal has to be the worst in NHL history. Another mistake by Garth Snow that leaves the Islanders handcuffed with another Yashin-like contract on the books. Maybe the NHL should include an amnesty clause in the next cba. If it ever gets done.

With save percentages of the last three years of .901, .886 and .876 it’s entirely possible that Dipietro hasn’t maintained that ability.

Granted the sample sizes are small, but he has a long way to go to be considered an upper echelon goaltender again.

A question I have is how does someone maintain the ability to play at an NHL level when they have an injury list as long as his? I’d think that even if he’s able to exercise, being away from the game for too long would hamper his ability to compete at that level.

Wow…how much did it cost him to insure his contract? This guy isn’t really that bad a goaltender but the Islanders really messed up with his contract given his ability to stay healthy. Hopefully he can get through a season if and when we start up.

On another note, am I the only one that everytime I hear about DiPietro I no longer think of his contract or injury history, but instead the time Brent Johnson simply broke his face?
