Enough won’t thought that’s the problem. The only places I see it hurting is maybe in some non-traditional places like FLA, PHX maybe NSH. The bigger markets will be ok. Sure some fans will leave but I can’t imagine it to be enough to even notice. Even if it was enough to noticed eventually some fans would come back and by the time the next CBA expired the owners would forget about it. I don’t go to games anyways cause it’s too much to spend on crap seats for me when I can sit at home and watch it so not a whole lot I can do about it.

Short term pain of a shutdown for long term gain.

We all know how he was party to the shutdown of MLB. In the 18 years since that time, however, they have had zero shutdowns.

As painful as it is to watch these two sides in their lame PR competition, if this all results in the next 18 years without a labor dispute, I’d take that in a heartbeat.

Irokkit when you get in work today and your boss pulls everyone together and says ” guys, business is great, revenues are up so here’s what I want to do. Starting today everyone’s salary is reduced 20%. Keep up the good work!! You are valued employees.

I know it’s a game but if u take crap every time it’s thrown in your face, it will continue to be thrown in your face until you stand up for yourself a little. If players caved immediately on this CBA. What do you think Bettman will do when next one is up. IMO a lot of owners are cool with a short season right to playoff money, because their TV money is already in their pocket.

Thank you calfut and all the others that speak of the love of the game that gets the skated sharpened in the beginning.
I’m 46. I played last night in a competitive game. I feel on my rump and tweaked a hamstring. On the phone with my buddy after the game…. We both said “I love this game” at different points in the conversation.
I have zero sympathy for any of these men. 46, 49, 57% WHATEVER!!! Good Lord man, 6.5 million, 6.8 million, 7.1 million!!
SHUT THE HECK UP AND PLAY!!!!

You’re missing the entire principal of the PA’s negotiation. They WILL NOT compromise on the percentage of their HRR UNLESS the owners compromise on putting more into revenue sharing from THEIR share of HRR. They have straight up said that they want a 1.87B share of their salaries in the FIRST year but they will make concessions IF the owners give something up too. The players have already moved off the 57% but the owners have yet to say “yes, we’ll fund more revenue sharing from our pockets” and not by coyly putting a larger percentage of the players’ HRR into escrow to pay for it. The NHL’s last offer wasn’t really that bad on paper considering they kept existing HRR definitions, but existing HRR definitions have a percentage of the players salaries going into escrow which could potentially be lost if revenue’s aren’t met. There’s much more to it than just saying the players offer up 54% and the owners offer up 49%.

Fehr’s and NHLPA,

Please for the love of the game, put some effort into your proposal your putting together this time. Otherwise you are wasting your time, your players career time, the owners time, Bettman and Daly’s time, and the fans time. It’s the worst kept secret in sports that your going to be around a 50/50 split in revenues. So don’t bullcrap the NHL and fans with this 57/43% crap or no salary cap. Offer them 51/49 so they can do the same thing and you can be at a 50/50 compramised split. Your going to be there eventually anyways. Give the fans the realignment that most of the fans want. In return you get your Olympics every four years instead of the All-Star Game, which is way better hockey anyways. NHL salaries are guaranteed, so there is zero reason to limit contract lengths. DiPietro is your poster child of how that works in your favor. Give the owners small rollbacks in your salary. Not a full rollback immediately, but a gradual over a 3 year span where your salaries are going to increase with expanding revenues anyways. So you wouldn’t be losing any money anyways, if you do, it would be minimal.

Here’s a thought instead of looking at it in terms of how much $ you have lost, I would ask you to look at it from the number of lifelong fans you have lost, because in the long run that is where future $ will come from. I can say this from a lifelong hockey fan, and former season ticket holder, I will not give another dollar of my income to this sport, this is my only way to voice my displeasure, and I’m sad to say it will probably hurt me more then them, but it’s the only voice I have!
