Replacement players is such a horrible idea to begin with, first it's different than the 1987 NFL stoppage and the 94-95 MLB stoppage because those were both player strikes so players were free to cross if they wanted to, this is a lockout, the NHL can not open the doors to just some union members, it's all or nothing, so any thought of current players being mixed in goes out the window.

Let's look at the quality of players you'd end up with, journeyman ECHL and AHL players who don't have either two way or one way NHL contracts currently (those players are NHLPA members when they're in the NHL and thus I don't believe the doors can be opened for them) you'll also get the occasional European player who was never able to make it in the NHL, guys in the mould of Pavel Brendl.

Does the NHL really want to attach their name to beer league players a bunch of never was players in the hopes of winning public support? How'd the whole replacement refs thing go for the nfl? Cause that idea was about 10 x better than this one.
