Getty Images Sens winger Milan Michalek suffered an abdominal injury last month — one that required surgery that will keep him on the shelf for four to six weeks — according to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun.
For Michalek, the injury couldn’t have come at a better time.
Why? Well, there’s a wrinkle in work stoppage rules which state certain injured players are exempt from being locked out. Here’s ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun with the explanation:
Any player injured in a hockey-related fashion is entitled to his full salary until he fully recovers and is deemed fit to play by team doctors. So, for example, guys like Chris Pronger or Mattias Ohlund will continue to get paid.
The caveat here is a requirement for these players to seek out team doctors and follow their counsel.
Garrioch reports Michalek is the only Senator not locked out and will receive his $4.5 million salary until he’s medically cleared.
Additionally, Michalek is allowed to go to the rink every day and rehab his injury — he’s believed to be the only Ottawa player eligible for such treatment.
