Getty Images KHL team Metallurg Magnitogorsk signed Evgeni Malkin and Sergei Gonchar to deals mere hours after the NHL officially locked out players, Pavel Lysenkov reports.
Here’s a link to the team’s press release, via Seth Rorabaugh.
Pittsburgh Penguins fans hoping for an ultimate reunion might be disappointed to hear Lysenkov’s report that Nikolai Kulemin is expected to be Metallurg’s third NHL import instead of Sidney Crosby.
Both Malkin and Kulemin are Metallurg alumni, including the season they played for Dave King, which was chronicled in the book “King of Russia.”
That’s not all the Penguins-related KHL news for the night, either.
Dmitry Chesnokov reports that Kris Letang might also ply his trade overseas.
(Idea: if Letang and Crosby end up on the same KHL team, they should square off against Malkin/Gonchar in a 2-on-2 match, “NBA Jam” style. Just throwing it out there.)
