Coyotes captain Shane Doan will decide between staying in Phoenix or signing with the Vancouver Canucks by today at 5 p.m. ET, reports John Gambadoro of Sports 620 KTAR in Arizona.

Doan’s first preference has always been re-upping with the Coyotes and ending his career with the franchise that drafted him in 1995 when the team was in Winnipeg. However, the club’s ownership uncertainty led him to explore alternatives this summer.

The Coyotes are still owned by the NHL, and a deal to sell them to Greg Jamison could be on the rocks due to the City of Glendale’s desire to re-work a lease agreement for Jobing.com Arena.

Doan, an unrestricted free agent, was reportedly “blown away” by a presentation the Canucks made to the 35-year-old. Vancouver is eager to add a character power forward of Doan’s ilk to its top-six, and the opportunity to play with the Sedin twins and compete for a Stanley Cup is presumably an attractive one.

Also worth noting:

—- Canucks assistant GM Laurence Gilman, formerly an executive with the Jets/Coyotes, has a good relationship with Doan.

—- Doan’s wife is from Kamloops, British Columbia, and the couple spends time there in the offseason.

—- Doan is also a co-owner of his former junior team, the Kamloops Blazers (WHL).

Doan is a class act (despite his wishy-washy attitude in these proceedings) and I’ll wish him luck either place he goes. He’s a solid player and he deserves a shot at a cup. At the same time its always nice to see a veteran choose to stay with the ‘hometown’ team.

I like Doan as a player and as a person, but I really feel like he would be making the wrong decision by staying phoenix, he’s gotta when a cup before he retires, but being a Detroit fan I would hate 2 see him go 2 Vancouver, I think he would have been a great fit in Detroit

Because that’s what Detroit needs, more ageing players.

I’d hate to get stuck behind Doan in a drive thru.

A big “WHAT IF?” to consider:

Suppose Doan signs with Vancouver….and Phoenix ends up winning the cup next year.

I know the chances are astronomical, but it would be interesting to see fate give Doan such a gigantic a$s-kicking.

that’s a huge what if. haven’t a couple of other players already left phoenix? it would have to be the mike smith show again

    GEEZER CENTRAL ?

Holy cow are these Vancouver Canucks ever becoming an “old folks home” now or what ? No doubt Doan can have a positive impact initially … but after that, I can’t see him being anything more than just another well-paid “aged” floater on a team which is now starting to look like some sort of an Alaska cruise ! And while it would be unfair to compare Doan to some of these other geriatric “busts” like Messier or Sundin, it’s nonetheless interesting to see the Canucks continually head in this “senior” direction … what are they thinking ? Almost every other team in the league is pursuing “youth” and the future, while the Canucks are going after old men with buckets of cash ? … it’s very strange …

ps: big man Luongo was up here at Northview the other day and he was still wearing that silly girl’s cap … what’s up with that ? … don’t they sell men’s clothing down there in Florida ?

proudliberal, that’s a clown screen name!!!

Doan showed zero class in the conference finals last year. he was talking smack during the handshakes…really captain? that and the dirty elbow were absolutely unnecessary.

  13. mpg44 - Sep 14, 2012 at 3:25 PM

Does anyone really care about this guy given the current state of the league??
