Still a teenager, Gabriel Landeskog has been named captain of the Colorado Avalanche, the club announced today.

Landeskog, 19, will take the ‘C’ from Milan Hejduk, who the club says relinquished his role.

From the release:

According to available research, at 19 years, 286 days, Landeskog is the youngest captain in NHL history. He is 11 days younger than Sidney Crosby, who was 19 years, 297 days when he was named captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 31, 2007.

Landeskog becomes just the fourth captain in Colorado Avalanche history, joining Joe Sakic, Adam Foote and Hejduk. The Stockholm, Sweden native is the 11th captain in the history of the Avalanche/Nordiques franchise and only the third European-born, following Hejduk and Peter Stastny.

Hejduk, 36, will remain an assistant captain, along with 26-year-old Paul Stastny (once considered by many as the future captain of the Avs).

Landeskog was the NHL’s rookie of the year in 2011-12 and has earned praise for his maturity on and off the ice.

“To me, he’s a little more mature than his years and he’s got a solid work ethic,” Avs coach Joe Sacco said in March. “He approaches every game like a true professional; like a guy who’s been in the league five or six years.”

Best of luck to you, kid! and Congrats!

I didn’t think that was allowed, considering that “Sid the Kid” was the previous owner of that title. Maybe because this season will be locked out and it won’t count anyways, thats why it was allowed.

Wow that’s crazy how close it is for him to take the title as youngest.

He’ll never be a better Captain than Yserman ever!!!!

    • jernster21 - Sep 4, 2012 at 2:17 PM

      Never heard of him.

    • jbreyare - Sep 4, 2012 at 7:14 PM

And Yserman was never a better captain than Super Joe Sakic!!!! What’s your point?

      YZerman. YZerman. YZerman.

He had Yzerman and Ysebaert mixed up. Happens all the time. Very similar players.

Now there’s a name for ya!

This doesn’t come as much of a surprise although O’Reilly could be wearing it too. For being such a young kid he’s extremely humble and has leadership qualities written all over him. Both of those guys are going to be huge assets for this team going forward and I can’t wait to see Landeskog lift the cup for Colorado in the future.

gotta make peter feel great they passed on paul. thought for sure just because of the history there that stastny wouldve stepped up and one day gotten it.

He makes 6.6m for 2 more seasons when he becomes a UFA – don’t be surprised if he’s traded in the next two seasons. He’s not a 6.6m/yr player, nor is he a 5m/yr player…I’d say his value is between 4-4.75m/yr and there’s no way he takes that drastic of a pay cut to remain with the Avs, especially with teams like Toronto begging to land someone like Stastny who will pay him accordingly.

At least the avs can beat Sid the kid at something. Surely not on the ice. Good luck avs, until you get rid of your frenchie management. You will continue to win nothing.

Called this months ago, kid is a stud and total Captain material

Wow with statsny and duchene and mcclemit he gets it? Wtf

    • jernster21 - Sep 5, 2012 at 1:16 AM

You mean McClement? The same McClement that’s not even on the team anymore? Oh yeah, him. Stastny and Duchene (at least at this point and time) aren’t captain material. Landeskog is the kind of kid that can already take this team on his back and win games. Duchene has a completely different personality than Landeskog, and frankly, he just isn’t that mature yet. He’s still trying to find his groove at the NHL level, alas, last years performance was mostly attributed to injuries, I see him having a break out year this season with PA Parenteau next to him on the wing. Stastny has reached his peak and still performs too inconsistently, his contract basically set him up for failure, even at his best he’s not worth the money he gets paid – you don’t want your captain setting that sort of standard/example for the rest of the team. This is basically why I think Hejduk is passing the torch going into this season, knowing that he’s at the end of his career and one of the kids needs to take the reigns and run with it. This team is Landeskog/O’Reilly/Duchene/Johnson’s going forward and Hejduk knows that…I honestly feel like him taking on the role last season contributed to the down year – some people just don’t want that sort of pressure whereas I think someone like Landeskog thrives in those situations and is the perfect candidate out of anyone on the team right now.

So since he now claims the title of youngest Cap’n evar from Sid the Kid, does that now make him Gabe the Babe?

      Ok, bad joke…
