What jumps out at me is the the congruency between “smartest-spending” teams and Stanley Cup Championships.

Removing San Jose at 5th, you have the last 5 SC champions, and almost in reverse-order in the last 5 years.

Of course I should add that if this report was expanded out to the last 2 decades rather than 5 years, the Red Wings would absolutely run away with the honor.

The Rays have made the playoffs 3 out of the last 4 years despite being on a division with two teams that have payrolls 3 to 4 times larger than theirs. It isn’t really fair to Detroit because the Rays(and perhaps the Spurs in the NBA) play in embarrassingly unbalanced leagues, but it doesn’t change the fact that they have overcome greater odds in putting together the rosters they have with the cash they have available.
