Crosby could play in Europe, says agent

Sidney Crosby’s agent, Pat Brisson, confirmed his client will consider playing in Europe if there’s an NHL work stoppage.

“If at one point there’s a lockout and the lockout goes long…Sidney wants to pay hockey,” Brisson told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Dave Molinari.

Now, obviously this isn’t the same as, say, Michal Neuvirth mulling a European odyssey. This is the NHL’s biggest star we’re talking about here.

Brisson’s comments come on the heels of Crosby’s Penguins teammate, Evgeni Malkin, suggesting that both of them could be bound for Russia to play in the KHL.

Of course, Malkin also said that Crosby wouldn’t consider that option until after Christmas, at which point the NHL and NHLPA may have already resolved their dispute.

Frankly, I’d be surprised – no, shocked – if we see Crosby skating in the KHL anytime soon. Mostly because I’m a cockeyed optimist who got himself mixed up in the high stakes game of world diplomacy and international intrigue that doesn’t see a lockout going past Christmas, but also because the risk of suffering another serious concussion while playing in Russia – or anywhere in Europe, really – seems like a risk that’s not worth taking.

Not to mention, Crosby doesn’t need the money and it’s not like he has a bunch of friends and family over there.

Pretty cold in Russia, too.

Update: Brisson also told the Chicago Sun-Times that Blackhawks teammates Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews would consider playing in Europe “under the right circumstances and appropriate time.”

He won’t do it because he will have no protection from the officials and the league. He would get his butt kicked out there n come back with yet another concussion.

How much anyone wanna wager this guy has never skated with a stick in his hand in his life? One of those guys who doesn’t come back to try outs a second time because he’s scared. A hockey fan who’s entire hockey experience amounts to getting drunk and yelling at the tv.

Still bitter about gettin bounced in the 1st round hu… Baby Shrek gettin shut down by a 19yo, Giroux lighting up Corsby then scoring a goal only second later.. Yea you guys are. N your only defensive reply is 1975 like really thats original. Like we don’t know the last time we won a cup was. Idiots. Look he’s soft no way around it. Is he talented n one of the best players in the league when healthy, yes. But he’s rarely healthy, and very injury prone. Look at the playoff game when he attempted to fight Giroux he ducked his head into G’s sholder, swong n staked around holding on for dear life, threw a few wild punches, n the ref’s came flying in to break it up. When do you ever see ref’s break up a fight when both skaters are still upright? Never….He would not survive without the protection from the NHL. N the only reason you have Crosby is because your team sucked, remember when they almost moved???? N He in in now way shape or form “the next great one”. He cant even hold a match to what Gretzky accomplished. Crosberries what are those the dingle berries that hang for Sidney’s butt? Sick yo.

You know, im not a crosby or pens fan in any regard, but you guys need to quit it with this “he wont last because he’ll get no ref protection.” The truth is that the NHL is the most physical and legally violent league in the world. Maybe there is some unlawful after the whistle stuff going on in russia but as far as legitimate game play goes, nothing comes close to the NHL and if he so chooses to go over seas then Im sure he’ll be fine.

On another note, realistically i do not see as many North American born players going over to the KHL as are speculated because of how culturally different the two parts of the world are. In addition, sorry to say, but Russia has to sketchy of a reputation for most young NHLers to ignore. Even if the SEL wont open its doors, the DEL, Swiss and Finnish league are more likely to be potential lockout escape plans for the NA players than Russia.

There you go, Owners. You have 15 days to make a deal, or you lose one of best players in the world, plus Malkin, Kane, Toews

And outside of Malkin, those aren’t even European players. Just imagine how fast the Sedins, Zetterburgh and Datsyuk, Chara, Gaborik, , and so many other European players would bolt to have a chance to play in their hometown teams.

    food for thought.

    @illadelphia

How many times did the pens bounce Philly from the playoffs? I’m pretty sure we did it on the way to winning the cup….and did it the year before on our way the the ECF. You’re a typical lowlife flyers fan that has little to no true hockey knowledge. I have all the respect in the world for the flyers as a team and organization, it’s stupid lowlife fans like you that are the reasons that every other fan base and team hates Philadelphia. Congratulations you’re an idiot. If you knew anything about the KHL or European hockey leagues you would know its a totally different game…..different as far as the violence that’s allowed….as in less if you couldn’t get that out of what I said. You’re dumb.

I love how flyer fans say its old for pens fans to remind flyers fans the last time they won anything meaningful was in 1975 but then comes back and uses the same insults penguin and Crosby fans have seen for years. What a hypocrite

  9. dcent87 - Aug 30, 2012 at 10:23 PM

Claude had a great 1 year. Good for him. What’s he won? Cup, MVP? Olympics in overtime? Be a hockey fan. Not a Sid hater u steak an cheese beer guzzling jealous losers. Practice? We talkin about practice man.

Only team that I hate in the NHL is the Laffs, because they fill up the rink year after year, are the richest franchise in the NHL, don’t give a flying frig that they put a mid quality AHL team on the ice that has zero chance to win anything, tell their fans every year that they are better than last year with the same group of piss down their leg players. They deserve to be dispised by every true hockey fan!

You Flyer and Pen fans are blessed to have teams worth watching and I have a hunch that if you all got together in the same room you would be slagging each other laughing and slapping each other on the shoulders and enjoying some cold ones!
