If you look at capgeek, Ottawa has the fourth-lowest payroll in the NHL. Depending upon what they do with the current CBA, Ottawa has to spend to hit the cap floor. To lock up a 23-year old #2 center for $3.5 million a year is a fairly reasonable expense (in the world of NHL contracts).

And I’m with you on that, but this is also why I’m on the players side this go around…It’s one thing for the owners to shoot themselves in the foot once…twice is overkill…

I made a post a couple weeks ago about what you said and I’ll say it again. You can debate all day whether guys like Parise, Suter, Crosby, Stall, or any of these long term big money guys are worth their checks. But the fact is the ownership is offering these contracts. It’s not fair to the players to get these contracts that they’ve commited to just to have them rolled back. The market this summer and previous summers could have totally been different otherwise. Which is why I also proposed, and still think, that players in that situation should actually be able to opt out of the deals and re-negoiate negotiate.

Yeah, but the owners aren’t telling the GMs to sign deals with the logic that they should structure them according to what they think is fair compensation, they’re telling them to go whole-hog and throw whatever money they want around – hey, no big, guys, we’re just gonna get Bettman to rewrite the rules afterward and cut all the players’ salaries to make up for it.

And this is why a lockout is happening.

Normally I’d call this a pretty good deal for Ottawa given his points per game average compared to the yearly cap hit. My only concern if I’m Ottawa is he didn’t play the whole year there so who knows. But it still eludes me that owners continue to approve these deals and then turn around and complain about handing them out.

Compared to what the owners are saying in their talks…his contract should be 2 to 3 years shorter and .5 to 1 million less on the cap hit.

Good deal for team and him. Its great knowing Sens have there top 2 centers locked up for the future.
