Flyers prospect Cousins charged with sexual assault

Aug 26, 2012, 5:00 PM EST

Nick Cousins

Nick Cousins, Philadelphia’s third-round pick at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, has been charged with sexual assault — along with two of his Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL) teammates.

According to a press release from the Sault Ste. Marie police service, the trio was charged on Saturday with an offense “to a female known to them.”

Cousins and teammate Andrew Fritsch — a Phoenix Coyotes draft pick — will appear in court on Oct. 1 while the third teammate, Mark Pettacio, has a bail hearing set for Monday.

Cousins signed his entry-level deal with the Flyers in March and participated in Philly’s prospect camp in July.

Here’s more from Chad Graff of the Philadelphia Inquirer:

[Cousins] is widely regarded as the Flyers’ top prospect. After being drafted in the third round in 2011, Cousins put up 88 points in 65 games for Sault Ste. Marie of the Ontario Hockey League. But he knows his role isn’t likely to be a point-per-game NHL player. He’s a natural agitator.

“That’s a huge part of my game,” Cousins said. “I grew up doing it. I just know how to get under people’s skin – the kind of guy you love to have on your team, but hate to play against.”

The Greyhounds organization has released a statement about the charged players. You can read it here.

Don’t do it, SCA. Not this time, man. Make fun of gingers and 1975, but not this, for the love of everything holy.

  2. phillyphann83 - Aug 26, 2012 at 5:12 PM

You know he will, he’s been non-existant lately but that’s only because the Flyers stories have ceased. He needs to get his fix. (notice everything is singular because we all know SCA is only 1 person)

  3. sjsharks66 - Aug 26, 2012 at 5:39 PM

    Disgraceful and very embarrassing.

  4. 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Aug 26, 2012 at 5:42 PM

I like how the other NHL prospect charged on the exact same count only gets an honourable mention for his efforts as an alleged rapist.

Nothing better than blatantly trolling Flyers fans and haters, eh?

    • killerpgh - Aug 26, 2012 at 6:10 PM

Do you think it has anything to do with the fact that Cousins is one of the Flyers top forward prospects? Andrew Fritsch is a guy that no one has heard of and probably never would have if not for this article. Where as I have heard a lot of Flyers fans say they hope Cousins can earn a roster spot on the 4th line and make Rinaldo not needed in the regular lineup. He hasn’t been found guilty of anything, but being charged mean they must have some strong proof of some wrong doing.

      • killerpgh - Aug 26, 2012 at 6:15 PM

I meant to say a few fans hope he can replace Rinaldo not a lot.

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Aug 26, 2012 at 6:45 PM

I’ve never heard of either of them. It’s just interesting how the reporting differs south of the border. In Canada this was reported as “three Soo Greyhounds players charged” but here the headline is designed to get hits from those who love or hate the Flyers.

      • stakex - Aug 26, 2012 at 9:11 PM

Andrew Fritsch was a sixth round pick thats not likely to make it to the NHL, as where this Cousins guy is the Flyers top prospect. I can understand why Cousins is the main focus of this story… hes the only one of them likely to be an NHL player some day (or at least was).

      • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Aug 26, 2012 at 10:04 PM

This is ProHockeyTalk and all three guys are OHL players, otherwise knows as pros. The headline gives no indication that three players were involved in the incident. It’s just shoddy reporting meant to generate hits.

      • psujay - Aug 27, 2012 at 12:12 AM

Wouldn’t Laughton be our top prospect? Hopefully these charges aren’t the truth, if they are I feel bad for the poor girl. Three guys assaulting one girl?

  5. sjsharks66 - Aug 26, 2012 at 8:20 PM

    @1943

You ever think maybe because the flyers player was an NHL ready prospect. The coyotes prospect and the other player are probably nobodies. This flyers player was a hot shot, a star.

Stop playing the sympathy card “oh no the media is out to get the flyers”.

    • stakex - Aug 26, 2012 at 9:13 PM

The guys probably going to end up as a 3rd-4th line agitator…. not what I would call a “star”.

    • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Aug 26, 2012 at 10:08 PM

After the Flyers were eliminated this year there was a new article written every time one of the players sneezed. I honestly think if it was an NHL-ready prospect on the Blue Jackets the headline would refer to three players, not just the one guy most likely to crack an NHL roster.

  6. sjsharks66 - Aug 26, 2012 at 9:17 PM

When I say star, I was talking about the minors.

  7. sjsharks66 - Aug 26, 2012 at 11:45 PM

Go cry a river. I don’t recall many articles bashing the flyers. Unless you are mistaking articles about injuries as just trying to get a rise or some interest.

    • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Aug 27, 2012 at 10:33 AM

Are you new around here? You seem to be under the impression that I’m a Flyers fan upset about how the team is treated here. That’s pretty damn far from the reality of this situation.

I didn’t say there have been lots of Flyers bashing articles around here, I said there have been lots of Flyers articles in general here. Go back and check the posts after they were eliminated if you don’t believe me.

You also seem to be missing the point. There was an incident involving three pro hockey players and yet only one is focused on, presumably because he is a Flyers prospect and focusing on him will generate more hits on this article. Like I said already, that is just some really shoddy, low-level reporting.

      • sportsfreak13 - Aug 27, 2012 at 12:26 PM

What really sucks is that we the fans are so jaded by stories like this that we bicker about team the player is signed to and how reporters may or may not use that to generate hits. Let’s not lose sight what the alleged accusers and victim is going through right now and how horrible this whole situation is. America seems to have turned into a guilty until proven innocent type of society and it sickens me but if the allegations are true I hope the accusers get put through the ringer.

      • sportsfreak13 - Aug 27, 2012 at 12:29 PM

        *meant suspects not accusers

Don’t pass judgement yet…remember Duke lacrosse.

  9. hockeyfan763 - Aug 27, 2012 at 10:11 AM

Yet another quality individual being worked into the Flyer family. He’ll be a fan favorite in no time….3 on 1 is that called an OHL hatrick ?

  10. pbhatesphilly - Aug 27, 2012 at 10:27 AM

I don t know why everyone seems surprised, this disgusting act of depravity is representative of how ALL Philly fans act. I always thought that the slugs in this world were the fans of Philly but it appears that the repugness has infiltrated to the players! Who can blame him though, being exposed to the filthy fan base can do this to a person!

    • dannythebisforbeast - Aug 27, 2012 at 11:09 AM

what did philly do to peanut butter?

      • pbhatesphilly - Aug 27, 2012 at 8:03 PM

PB isn’t t peanut butter it’s Philly blows!

  11. phillyphann83 - Aug 27, 2012 at 3:39 PM

pb…thanks for taking the bait. I know after reading this story that some dumb fan somewhere would show how low their IQ is and somehow say this is Philly’s fault. Alas, you have not failed us. This ALLEGED act was committed in Canada, well before Cousins was drafted by the Flyers. We had nothing to do with him when this happened, so good try saying this was because he was exposed to our fanbase. Now begone troll!!

    • killerpgh - Aug 27, 2012 at 4:10 PM

Where did you see this happened before June 25th, 2011? I’m not saying you are wrong, but it just seems like a very long time to build a case.

      • phillyphann83 - Aug 31, 2012 at 5:50 PM

you think it doesnt happen? it happened to me!!! I was arrested and charged with sexual assault in November for a hookup with a 25 yr old woman from July 2010!!! I just had all charges dropped because prosecutors determined her accusation had no merit, no proof, and was simply out of spite because I wouldnt date her! Suffice to say im now pursuing charges on her for false accusations, defamation of character, and also suing her for lost wages as I couldnt get a job as a paid firefighter for a position that was being held for me but had to be given up because the prosecution took so long(9 months!) to drop the charges. Sorry if im siding with them before the facts come out, I personally know what its like to have people pass judgement without knowing the facts.

    • pbhatesphilly - Aug 27, 2012 at 8:07 PM

See even you expected it you slug! Sounds like you have some insider information, were you somehow involved? And by the way it is insider not inside her so get your head out of the gutter TROLL. I see what you mean, calling someone a troll does make me sound tough too!

      • phillyphann83 - Aug 31, 2012 at 5:39 PM

im confused by your “inside her” comment because my post didnt have either word or phrase in it. was this just a sorry attempt at a joke?

    • 1943mrmojorisin1971 - Aug 27, 2012 at 8:47 PM

“Brian Nicholas Cousins of Belleville, Ont., Andrew Douglas Fritsch of Brantford, Ont. and American Mark Anthony Petaccio were charged by Sault Ste. Marie police on Saturday, the same day police allege the assault occurred.”

Seems to me that information of this nature should take priority over the “get to know Nick Cousins” stuff that makes up most of this post.

  12. Jonny 5 - Aug 27, 2012 at 8:06 PM

A bunch of kids with pro aspirations and one of them with an excellent shot at making it gang raping a girl? Excuse me if I wait to pass judgement until more facts come to light here. Call me skeptical but people are involved here and male or female they do lie. Didn’t a lesbian just get attacked and cut with “hate crime” topping the news, just for us to find out it was bs?
