Yakupov suffers leg infection after falling off treadmill

According to Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal, Oilers rookie Nail Yakupov is fighting off a leg infection after suffering a spill on a treadmill.

More, from the Journal:

The Edmonton Oilers’ first overall draft at the June NHL entry draft was training before Monday’s skate at Perry Pearn’s three-on-three pro conditioning camp at K of C Twin Arenas and tumbled off the treadmill. He did skate Monday, but wasn’t on the ice Tuesday or Wednesday.

There is no firm report on when Yakupov will be back on skates.

While Yakupov is the one hurting, you have to feel bad for ol’ Perry Pearn. He was scapegoated in Montreal and, if this turns out to be anything serious, he’ll be primed to wear the goat horns again (yes, even though this is clearly not his fault.)

All joking aside, the Yakupov injury can’t be welcome news to the Oilers faithful — especially in light of recent history.

Taylor Hall, the top pick in 2010, appeared in only 65 games as a rookie before a high ankle sprain ended his season.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, the top pick in 2011, played just 62 games as a rookie while dealing with a series of shoulder issues.

Chances are the medical staff will be loading up Yakupov with antibiotics over the next few days.

You know, just to be safe.

I think it is because of how healthy they are and how clean they are, they are basically in a safety buble and likely dont have the best immune systems.

Ha. I hope your kidding. Pretty sure the healthier you are, the less likely you are to catch an infection/sickness. Biology 10 will teach you that.

Is this going to end up like Chris Pronger’s Knee Injury > Virus > Concussion?

That is why I try to avoid treadmills (or any exercise equipment) at all cost.

      Agreed. Better safe than sorry.

Haven’t you seen those safety commercials put out by the government about texting and treadmilling? So many people have been seriously infected from crashing while texting and treadmilling! I guess he is now just another statistic! Poor guy!

Let’s hope for Edmonton’s sake this isn’t a sign of things to come. Hall has had numerous injuries already RNH has has some also they don’t need Yakopuv to go this route either.

It would suck to see this guy’s promising career end before it even began. Especially after talking about putting hard work in. The Oilers have just been the definition of Murphy’s Law
