Not shocking: Most NHL owners are Republicans

Aug 23, 2012, 1:57 PM EDT

If you’ve ever wondered which political party the owner of your favorite NHL team supports (have any of you?), the New York Times has done the extensive research.

Not surprisingly, Republican candidates/campaigns have received the most donations from NHL owners, the majority of whom we assume are pro business (and know for a fact have anti-union leanings.)

Anyway, the full breakdown is there if you’re curious.

Hey, maybe PHT should start covering the election if there’s a lockout.

Would you like that?

Or, would you rather take a chainsaw and cut off your leg?

  1. comeonnowguys - Aug 23, 2012 at 2:11 PM

    And here… we…. go.

    • rarelyshaves - Aug 23, 2012 at 4:34 PM

Well it’s at least relevant because it explains the labor dispute perfectly

  2. kingfooj - Aug 23, 2012 at 2:23 PM

    im good with the chainsaw

  3. sjsharks66 - Aug 23, 2012 at 2:34 PM

I’d rather Bettman take a chainsaw and cut off his leg.

  4. nothanksimdriving123 - Aug 23, 2012 at 2:57 PM

Since all or nearly all are wealthy, middle-aged white guys, one would not expect many of them to have as their highest priorities protecting the rights of women and visible or other minorities. It is easy to imagine most of them being more concerned about protecting their wealth with lower tax rates. Protecting the environment is of less (but more than zero) concern when you can afford to live where ever you wish. While these are obviously generalizations and neither party has a perfect record protecting supporters’ interests, it does help explain the story above.

  5. pantherpro - Aug 23, 2012 at 3:19 PM

So I guess it is safe to say that most of them like Tim Thomas are clueless, aholes, right? I love the sport but all owners in sports are looking for that tax break that fat head Romney is going to present to them on a silver platter! Luckily, most intelligent people will reject Dumb (Romeny) Dumber ( Ryan) come November and the owners wont be quite as rich! Time to pay up billionaires!!

    Go Sharks!!

    • kitshky - Aug 23, 2012 at 4:29 PM

It’s good to see that there’s still people out there like you that grasp the nuanced reality that is modern day politics ….

    • drewzducks - Aug 23, 2012 at 5:01 PM

And any intelligent people who consider voting for milk toast Mitt will no doubt be intimidated by the New Black Panther thugs into for the current clueless ahole who’s in charge.

    • imacdane - Aug 23, 2012 at 6:15 PM

      “Time to pay up billionaires!!”

It sounds like a joke, but sadly many people (yourself included, evidently) have that mentality.

  6. isithockeyseasonyet - Aug 23, 2012 at 3:33 PM

How is Ryan dumber? Its hard to top tying a dog to the roof of your car thinking you’re solving a problem, wonder if he tied his horse to the roof of the airplane flying it to London

  7. jokoneski - Aug 23, 2012 at 4:00 PM

…and this is coming from one of the most liberal networks in television(NBC)….leave politics out of your sportscasts please…..

    • stakex - Aug 23, 2012 at 5:29 PM

Relax dude… hes just reporting a survey, not an opinion.

    • manchestermiracle - Aug 25, 2012 at 10:42 AM

I don’t watch Fox because they can’t leave their far-right-wing “reporting” out of any story they’ve ever run, but you want NBC to not report facts you don’t like? Simple solution: Don’t come here.

  8. sabatimus - Aug 23, 2012 at 4:03 PM

    “Democrats, F**K YEAH!

    Republicans…..f**k yeah……………………….f**k yeah…………………zzz”

  9. rosloe62 - Aug 23, 2012 at 4:08 PM

Not shocking: Most NHL owners are Republicans. Not shocking: Hockey will always be a second tier sport!

  10. xaf605 - Aug 23, 2012 at 4:11 PM

Agree jokoneski leave politics out of sports nbc you are pathetic

  11. antmel30 - Aug 23, 2012 at 4:42 PM

I am so sick of our one sided liberal media. What does political party have to do with the lockout or nhl. I love that the democrats think that they get tax breaks when dems are in office. Who do you think is going to pay for the stimulus package. You know the package that added another 3 trillion to our national debt. The working class willm pay it back through taxes where do you think the money comes from taxes dumb a$$e$. I am not rich by any means but I feel like being democratic is another way of saying I want a free hand out. Free health care extensions on unemployment benefits. God stop waiting for a government handout and get a freaking job. Why should any democrat want to work when the government gives you so much its ridiculous. Why is such a big deal that rich people are rich. They worked hard for their money and deserve the rewards they get. Obama goes on like ten vacations a year and he is rich but you dont see him giving us tax payers a break because every time he goes on vacation its on the tax payers dollar. Stop listening to the overwhelming liberal media its a joke.

    • joebuckiscreepy - Aug 24, 2012 at 12:13 PM

Do you have a framed autographed picture of Rush Limbaugh in your mancave?

    • manchestermiracle - Aug 25, 2012 at 10:40 AM

How can you be “so sick of…one-sided liberal media” when you obviously have the Fox channel on 24/7? And anybody who isn’t filthy rich but still supports the Republican agenda is just stupid. Democrats suck big-time, too, but at least they aren’t (overtly) pushing for the rich to get richer off the backs of the middle class.

Another thing you tea baggers just don’t seem to get: Unemployment benefits are paid for by payroll taxes. You know, those taxes that a worker pays when they are working? So that when you lose your job, likely because some rich fat cat is trying to maximize profits, you have a safety net that keeps you from (maybe) losing your car and house. Apparently deep thinkers like you would rather have millions more living on the street starving.

No one I know has a problem with anyone working hard and getting ahead. What pisses most normal people off is when you have enough money to hire tax lawyers so you can avoid your responsibilities. You didn’t get rich in a vacuum. You got the benefit of a country built mostly by working-class stiffs, including infrastructure (you know, roads, airports, that kind of stuff), security (the working-class stiffs who staff the police departments, fire departments and military), and who make up the vast number of customers you depend on to buy your product. Your lack of perspective and compassion is stunning.

  12. antmel30 - Aug 23, 2012 at 4:50 PM

You talk about Romney giving a silver platter tax break to rich. Then what did Obama do with the stimulus package that sent billions of dollars to major corporations only to give million dollar bonuses to their employees and then go bankrupt anyway. Stop waiting for a government handout and expect people who went to good schools and actually worked in high school to get to a great college and become successful and go do something for yourself. the only time you have money is probably the first of the month when your check comes in.

    • manchestermiracle - Aug 25, 2012 at 10:31 AM

You mean the stimulus package that Bush started? One can tell you must be a tea party supporter because you think you can make up your own facts.

Oh, and your original point makes no sense at all. Obama screwed up by allowing Bush’s bailouts to continue but you seem to have completely lost focus of one simple fact: Those bailouts went mostly to banks that then turned around and “rewarded” their management (not the working class stiffs) with huge bonuses, stock options and buyouts.

I have no love for Democrats, but your blind defense of the Republican mismanagement that did more than anything else to put Obama into the White House would be hilarious if it wasn’t so tragically grounded in fantasy.

  13. antmel30 - Aug 23, 2012 at 4:51 PM

Obama gives free money to anyone who doesnt want to work then rewards them with free benefits.

    • stakex - Aug 23, 2012 at 5:30 PM

I don’t want to work, and believe me… no one gives me free money. You crazy people are whats wrong with this country.

  14. ray2013 - Aug 23, 2012 at 5:37 PM

    Who cares?

  15. xaf605 - Aug 23, 2012 at 6:23 PM

Not shocking most nhl players are republicans ! So what

  16. capsfan19 - Aug 23, 2012 at 6:35 PM

Seriously? Seriously? You have been so scraped to write an article that you write this? It couldn’t be an article like “on this day in hockey news, etc”.
This is REDICULOUS. Not that i side with the owners but because they’re Republicans it makes them more despicable? WHO CARES WHAT POLITCAL PARTY THEY ARE!
“This just in Gary Bettman is proclaimed Green Party Satanist…” We dont care dude.
Hockey news is hockey news. Now even sports news has become infected with political nonsense. This is NOT the realm for this.
I don’t care if people read this or not but im pissed.
I would rather see daily news articles about bigfoot sightings in Troy Brouwer’s backyard. But this? Wow…. Just wow.
“alright boys, what do we have to post today?”
“oh sir pick me i got a great one… Owners are republicans!!”
“well i’ll be boy thats genius!”

    • imacdane - Aug 23, 2012 at 6:41 PM

      It’s NBC…

  17. xaf605 - Aug 23, 2012 at 7:11 PM

I wouldnt watch nbc at all if they didnt have hockey just pathetic

  18. kiopta1 - Aug 23, 2012 at 8:00 PM

He makes one little report on NHL owners and their pol orientation and everyone loses their minds!

  19. pantherpro - Aug 23, 2012 at 9:00 PM

I forgot that quite a few of you yahoos like hockey because there are so few brothers in the league! I guess you don’t mine paying similar prices to NBA? Put away your guns, your bibles and your meaningless job! You’re too stupid to realize that Obama is trying to help those in need like you fools! Figure it out!

    • tcclark - Aug 23, 2012 at 10:55 PM

yes and you’re too stupid to realize that because of these handouts, we won’t be getting any Social Security Benefits when were older. Personally I’d much rather take my government handout when I’m too old and can’t work.

This has nothing to do with him being black… unless of course your question is “Why was he elected in the first place.”

  20. drewzducks - Aug 23, 2012 at 9:28 PM

    Hey pantherho,

thanks for confirming the old adage the “mine” is a terrible thing to waste. Dexter Manley must be proud. Hallelujah !

  21. usm418 - Aug 23, 2012 at 10:29 PM

    Shame on Ilitch & Karmanos.

  22. tcclark - Aug 23, 2012 at 10:55 PM

    Flyers – Republican
    Penguins – Democrat

    can they agree on anything?

    • joebuckiscreepy - Aug 24, 2012 at 12:22 PM

I lean left and I wouldn’t be caught dead switching teams.

  23. proudliberal85392 - Aug 24, 2012 at 12:11 AM

Two things that are not surprising:
    1. This story
    2. amtel is an idiot.

  24. proudliberal85392 - Aug 24, 2012 at 12:12 AM

That should be antmel is an idiot.

  25. csilojohnson - Aug 24, 2012 at 12:31 AM

Wow, article did mot warrant this kind of uproar. Chill out people and open your eyes. Any extreme is bad. Dont get me wrong, I think both parties are full of it. If you cant see that Fox news is just a bad as NBC you need to get your head out of your a$$. Extremism needs to go. All forms, political, religous, etc. WAKE UP PEOPLE! NIETHER PARTY GIVES A F@&K ABOUT YOU ONCE ELECTION IS OVER!!!

    • billsfan13594 - Aug 24, 2012 at 1:26 PM

“Extremism needs to go. All forms, political, religous, etc.”

Maybe I’m missing something, but your response to ‘extremism” seems in itself, extreme. That’s kind of like saying “never say never.” You’re advocating the one thing your arguing against. Not trying to start anything, though.

  26. habsflop - Aug 24, 2012 at 8:56 AM

and in other news the sun will set, we will pay taxes (regardless of what party you vote for) and the Nucks will try to win games by flopping and scoring on PP

  27. 950003cups - Aug 24, 2012 at 11:24 AM

Maybe the DNC would have more wealthy supporters if they didn’t have arrogant guys like Obama threatening to take it away from them, and start class warfare. That scumbag sent this country from Hope & Change to Hate & Divided in his first year.

    • joebuckiscreepy - Aug 24, 2012 at 12:19 PM

asking people who receive outrageously bloated salaries and bonuses (some who work for companies who received government bailouts to keep the economy from collapsing) to pay a small % more to help dig this country out from the debt that was created largely in part by starting two wars AND drastically cutting taxes at the same time is NOT class warfare. get a clue.

  28. joebuckiscreepy - Aug 24, 2012 at 12:10 PM

I see there are plenty of people in here that get their “facts” from Fox and talk radio…I feel sorry for you. They are just trying to make people who have a lot more in common than they might think hate each other while they get rich in the process.

With that being said, there should be a golden rule that politics and sports should be kept completely separate. Being able to have fun and watch a game over a beer with someone who you completely disagree with politically is something that makes sports so great; you can forget about life for a few hours and just enjoy yourself.

I’m a left-leaning realist who is a Flyers fan. I always try to listen respectfully when someone feels the need to mindlessly attack what I believe in out of basic decency and I don’t give two s&its who Ed Snider gives money to.

  29. swadehoo - Aug 24, 2012 at 1:18 PM

I’m sorry, I thought this was a hockey website…my bad.

  30. pantherpro - Aug 24, 2012 at 4:00 PM

    Hey TC Clark

Don’t worry about getting social security. The years of watching games in moms basement, too much stroking and large boiler ….. You’re not long for this world anyway. Sounds like nobody would miss you either, redneck

  31. antmel30 - Aug 24, 2012 at 4:24 PM

Panther how dumb are you. You must be a brother and only vote for people because of color. I bet you dont know anything about whats going on. To say Obama is trying to help is comical. Why do you have to worry though you are probably unemployed like a lot of the us now collecting a ss check living in section 8 and feeding of the rest of us who pay taxes and go to work to support kids and families like yours who have no directions and expect everything to be given to you. I am not even going to get into it with you because you like most dems are clueless.

  32. antmel30 - Aug 24, 2012 at 4:29 PM

Panther pro since you like Obama so much i bet you liked his 5 trillion dollars spent. Thanks for helping us tax payers. You are probably one of those dummies who pay of a credit card with a credit card and think your getting yourself out of debt. You are a waste to our country and a mooch.

  33. beasleyreece - Aug 24, 2012 at 5:28 PM

facts have a liberal bias. roughly 2 trillion, of the 5 trillion in debt is because obama had to put both wars on the books. bush never added them while he was busy being the worst president in american history. when clinton left office we were collecting roughly 3.3 trillion in revenues. we now collect roughly 2.2 trillion. 35% of clintons came from business, that figure now stands @ 10%. we are over budget by roughly 1 trillion a year in federal spending. it can all be fixed by going back to clintons tax rates, & cutting corporate tax loopholes.

  34. 950003cups - Aug 24, 2012 at 8:17 PM

    First and foremost..

Vote this liberal low life scum sucking thief out of the White House before he spends this country bankrupt. All he did was talk about “failed policies” during his campaign. Then he adopted these exact same policies and screwed up.

But it’s OK!! Because I’m obviously a racist because I don’t like Obama or his mindless, lazy, socialist Obamabots who are scared once he’s out of power, they’ll have to work for a living. 4 years and absolutely NOTHING was accomplished. I love how all Obamabots can say is “he killed Osama!” if Bush did it, he’s a criminal.

    • manchestermiracle - Aug 25, 2012 at 10:24 AM

Since Obama has done nothing different from Bush (continuing 90% of the policies Bush implemented) then how else is anyone supposed to figure out why you can’t stand him unless it’s because you’re scared of his tan?

  35. csilojohnson - Aug 25, 2012 at 12:12 AM

Exreme ideas are extreme in comparison.. Change is extreme in any sense. I hear your point though. The capital letters did contradict the very general meaning of extreme. Lol

  36. manchestermiracle - Aug 25, 2012 at 10:23 AM

Democrats suck as much as Republicans. Really, how hard is it to figure out they are just opposite sides of the same coin? What’s hilarious about Republicans owning sports teams with salary caps and revenue sharing is that they seem to have no problem with communism in their own backyard.

Socialism for the masses, like Social Security and Medicare? Oh, hell no! But socialism that benefits me as a small-market team owner? Oh, hell yeah! The hypocrisy of politics in general is stunningly overshadowed by the hypocrisy of Republicans in particular….
