I think that’s fair. I definitely wouldn’t be so hard on him if he didn’t get that contract. he’s not worth more than, let’s say, 2.8 million a year, but Tampa decided that he was worth twice that.

I will disagree on his offensive game though. I’m probably on the smaller end of the spectrum, but I thought his defense was better than his offense, and that says a lot considering he was an “offensive defenseman.” When he passed, he turned it over, when he shot, he shot it wide. His numbers were very opportunistic, and had a lot to do with the minutes he was playing. When you play a lot with the Giroux, Jagr, and Hartnell line, you’re going to accumulate some points. When you’re consistently making mistakes shooting and passing, there’s not really much of an offensive game to brag about.

I think Carle is a decent player. The majority of fans in Philly really dislike him but I didn’t mind his offensive game. That being said, he got ridiculously overpaid by Tampa. They should know better since they had him for all of 12 games in 08-09 before they got tired of him and shipped him here for STEVE EMINGER (steve downie was a part of the deal too). I love how the media nowadays, whenever talking about Carle, explains how he actually wasn’t shielded by Pronger after several years of telling us that Pronger made him what he is. There’s a huge difference between Carle turning the puck over and having #20 to save the day and Carle turning the puck over with whoever he’ll be playing next to in Tampa Bay. Good luck lightning.

very good point. they have similar statistics and style of play. I’m sure someone would have atleast offered him $5.5 to 6 per. I think it’s a great deal for both sides although it’d probably be better for the Flyers if it was a 4-5 year deal.

I don’t think this point is being made enough…. Matt Carle got more money! You can’t say they overpaid for Hartnell when Carle’s going to be robbing the Tampa community for the next 6 years… and i’m not just talking about their money… their hopes and dreams too. Having Carle on the ice is like giving the other team another player. He passes to their team more than yours.

During a wild summer of teams all over the nhl over paying players, its nice to see the flyguys avoid two, as earlier posted(not over paying Carle and under paying Hartsy). Good job homer, now go get Doan or Ryan!!

with his style of play and his age, the ceiling has been reached in my opinion. i’m not saying he isnt an asset to any team, too old (30 is not bad), or not worth the money, but someone out there wouldve definitely overpaid if they let him test the market and i dont think he wanted to go another season and taking the chance that his stock would drop either. you gotta give him credit for being an opportunist and making an overall smart deal for himself at the right time.

I wouldn’t rule it out completely. It is true that Giroux was responsible for setting up the majority of his goals, and it is a stretch for him to bury 37 again. But, you do have to take into consideration his compete level and work ethic. A lot of his goals were also just completely out hustling and over powering the other team’s defensemen. A player like that will always be successful.

We’ve been hearing about four-year, $30 million dollar offers to Shane Doan, a twenty-goal, fifty-point player who’s probably going to get worse from there given his age. According to free agency logic, Hartnell’s probably worth something like nine million dollars every year ’till he’s forty.

Free agency is a hell of a drug.

agree. good loyal move. he is never gonna put up 37 again and he knows it. he didnt cripple his team or make it into an awkward situation. he took a fair deal and philly can still make their team better and contend. he is affordable at this rate, he wont be productive enough in the future to hail any more than that anyway. seems like an honorable deal all around.

Of course an agent would say that. But in the end if he is happy to be in Philly and gave them a discount to help resign other players in the future, who cares? Agents always thinking about their 10% and not the intangibles weighing into a players decision.

This guy isn’t about the money. He enjoys playing hockey, especially in front of Philly fans. He obviously doesn’t care that much about his salary raise based on ONE year of good performance. When you’re making 4mil+ a year, I think you’re happy regardless.

As much as I despise the guy, I cant blame him for this deal. What would happen if he got injured this year (ACL for example)? He would be worth next to nothing. What if he had an 18 goal year. Would anyone spend more than 4 million on him? I wouldnt. I think he did what he could for security and I do not blame him. If he continues to play well and puts up 40 goals, the Flyers got a steal. Like wakegoalie27 said, I think both parties win on this deal.

Think about it. The loser of the perry sweepstakes next season would pay hella good money to hartsy, especially of he put up a 30 goal season!

Hartsy took the years and no movement clause. If you ask me all parties involved CLEARLY win.
