Outside of the Wings organization, Hartnell is my favorite NHL player…and that takes a lot to say since I am in no way shape or form a Flyer fan. He lives the hockey life most of us mens league players want; he has a blast every game, scores goals, drops the gloves and always has a smile on his face…even when he’s playing the Pens. This is a hell of a bargain for Philly to have him in the locker room and in that city for another seven total years. Good luck Philly…just stay out of the Central (or conference B if the change ever happens).

What does slowing down mean for Hartnell? He stands in front of the crease. If they’re gonna catch you, you might as well meet them in front of the goalie.

I’m kinda shocked I may be the only one who thinks the deal is shocking. This guy is my favorite player in the NHL, he makes games fun to watch in another way. Like the time he tossed his glove at Malone to try to stop him on a breakaway…. But for the next 7 years he will be getting 4.7 a year… If the Cap drops we will be paying 1/11th of the cap to a guy who has had one great year. If last year he didn’t have a career year I think we could have gotten him for about 3.5 a year or less

Lets see: both are power forwards, both can put the puck in the net and both are big pains in the asses. Other than talent, both of them are the same player (plus, someone would have overpaid for Hartnell if they missed out on Perry).

Great deal. Hartnell is an all around great player who is a great presence in the locker room. James Neal is nothing but a cheap player who can score.

Bad point. Many things can happen between now and down the road. Plus, Hartnell could have gotten a lot more if he tested FA next year (especially since the loser of the Corey Perry sweepstakes is gonna get desperate for someone of his ilk).

Both deals are good in my opinion. $4.75 million a year for a 25 – 30 goal scorer who plays on the first line isn’t bad. Hartnell may slow down a bit in his final two years, but then again it isn’t unheard of for a hockey player to play at a high level at 34-36 years of age. Especially a power forward who uses his strength more then his skating ability. Just look at players like Knuble who were very effective at 35 and 36 years of age. Hartnell has a record for being pretty durable as well. Knock the deal all you want, but I don’t see how this deal is a bad one, besides his deal is less then it is for Neal.

You forget the fact that they got both these players at a bargain price. Under five million for both a 30 goal scorer and a 28 goal scorer. Not to mention that simmonds will still be in his 20s when his deal is up. Hartnell will be 36 which isn’t to bad. Both players signed for less money per year because they signed them long term. If they tried to sign them to a three year deal who is to say the players would have agreed to the same price per year? I think it is a good move. Heck hartnell is making 4.5 mil a year now, so he only really got a .25 mil increase. Not to bad if you ask me.

My point? If I have to spell it out, my point is that you have two wingers coming off of career years (although Neal’s numbers were a bit better) – signing almost identical deals. Neal will spend all of his best years with the Pens; Hartnell will starting slowing down halfway through this deal. I’m saying, given their age, this deal makes Neal’s look really good.

Or they could could have another career year next year and then have to pay even more to get them signed and if the CBA only allows 4 year contracts, they will now have an extra 2 years on that.

I’m just going to throw this out. Simmonds has a career year and signs a 6 year deal. Hartnell has a career year and signs 6 years. Seems like the flyers are getting a little to excited. Both should have gotten like 3 years and if they keep up the numbers then give em the next 3. This just seems like it COULD blow up in their faces. As of now both are good signings because they had great years.

Hartnell is a really good player. I think where people underestimate him is with his personality in the locker room. He is a great guy for team chemistry. He keeps the team lose with his humor and gets along with everyone. This is a really good move by the Flyers. Opposing teams can’t stand him, but when he is playing on your team you got to love him.
